US President Joe Biden has expressed his intention to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Biden responded affirmatively when he was asked by reporters on Saturday in Delaware if he has a plan to have talks with Xi in the near future.
He was also asked whether he would review tariffs that his predecessor, Donald Trump, imposed on China. Biden responded that he was in the process of making up his mind.
Even while relations between the US and China are strained, officials from both sides have shared the need for continued dialogue.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi in Luxembourg on Monday. They traded barbs over the Taiwan issue but agreed to continued talks to avoid unintended conflicts.
If Biden holds talks with Xi, they would be the first since their online talks in March.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended coronavirus vaccines for children under five years of age.
CDC Director Rochelle Walensky on Saturday endorsed an advisory committee's recommendation to vaccinate all children between the ages of six months and five years.
The decision came after the US Food and Drug Administration authorized on Friday emergency use of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for the under-five age groups.
The FDA approved the use of the Pfizer vaccine for infants and children from six months through four years of age, and the Moderna vaccine for those aged six months through 17.
Currently, the minimum required age for coronavirus vaccine shots in the United States is five years old.
Walensky said in a statement, "we have taken another important step forward in our nation's fight against COVID-19. We know millions of parents and caregivers are eager to get their young children vaccinated, and with today's decision, they can."
The vaccine rollout for the expanded age groups in the US is expected to begin soon.

A group of researchers says tests of two coronavirus drugs on hamsters indicate that the risk of drug-resistant variants emerging is limited.
The study was conducted by Professor Kawaoka Yoshihiro from the University of Tokyo's Institute of Medical Science and other researchers.
They used hamsters with suppressed immune systems and infected them with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The group then administered Lagevrio, which is also known as molnupiravir, and another drug developed by Japanese pharmaceutical firm Shionogi. Lagevrio is already in use. An application for Shionogi to be used in Japan has been submitted.
The results for both drugs showed that the amounts of the virus in the hamsters' lungs dropped to one 10,000th on the second day of treatment. But some amounts of the virus remained because of the suppressed immune systems.
On Day 9, the researchers checked the therapeutic efficacy of the drugs against the virus extracted from the hamsters. They say they found no resistant variants.
The group says some antiviral drugs can cause resistant variants to emerge in several days.
Kawaoka says further studies are needed to see if results will be the same in humans, but at least the tests on animals suggest that the two drugs carry a low risk of leading to resistant variants.

Hydrangea flowers are in full bloom at a temple near Tokyo.
The Nichiunji temple in Chiba Prefecture has about 20,000 hydrangea plants in its compound.
The temple says the flowers began blooming in early June, about a week later than usual due to low temperatures.
The temple says the number of visitors has been gradually increasing this year after a drop over the past two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The blue, purple and white colors of the flowers make a stunning contrast with the temple's vermillion gate.
A woman in her 60s said it is her first visit to the temple and the calm atmosphere is wonderful.
A couple in their 30s said the hydrangea flowers are more colorful than expected and beautiful.
The blossoms can be enjoyed until around July 10.
