Japanese police say former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo died from loss of blood after a bullet damaged an artery under his collarbone.

Police carried out an autopsy on Abe's body through early Saturday.

They say the bullet went through Abe's upper left arm and damaged a blood vessel under his collarbone.

The police say the attacker fired a gun from close range, apparently with the intent to kill.

Abe was fatally shot on Friday morning as he was making a stump speech near a railway station in the western city of Nara.

Police arrested the 41-year-old suspect, Yamagami Tetsuya, on the spot.

The unemployed man, a resident of Nara, told police he held a grudge against a certain organization, and believed Abe was connected with it.

The suspect is quoted as saying his grudge is not connected to Abe's political beliefs.

Police say the gun used in the attack was self-made, and measured about 40 centimeters in length. They say they seized several more guns with similar features from the suspect's home.

Police say the attack was likely well planned.

Police in Japan's western prefecture of Nara say they will review the security arrangements for former prime minister Abe Shinzo, after he was shot to death on Friday.

41-year-old suspect Yamagami Tetsuya lives in Nara city and was arrested at the scene after shooting Abe who was speaking to a crowd as part of election campaigning.

At a news conference on Friday evening, Nara prefectural police said they have set up a 90-member task force and will investigate the case as a murder.

Officials said they learned about Abe's visit to Nara on the previous evening but this was still enough time to prepare the necessary security arrangements.

Police said the suspect admitted to shooting Abe and explained that he had a grudge against a certain organization, which he believed the former prime minister was involved with.

Yamagami told police that his mother was deeply involved in the organization and had donated a lot of money, which caused serious problems for his family.

Police quoted the man as saying that he had learned about Abe's visit to Nara City on the internet, and he came to the site by train.

Officials said the handmade gun used to kill Abe measured about 40 centimeters long.

Police said they searched the suspect's residence and seized several handmade metal and wooden guns, which also resembled the one used in the attack.

They also confiscated the suspect's belongings, including a shoulder bag, smartphone and wallet. They believe the attacker carried the gun used in the murder in a navy blue cloth bag measuring 40 centimeters in length.

Police quoted Yamagami as saying that he had served with the Self-Defense Forces for three years until 2005, and he is currently unemployed.

Japan's National Police Agency will review security arrangements for former prime minister Abe Shinzo following his fatal shooting.

Abe was shot from behind on Friday, while giving a speech in the western city of Nara. He was confirmed dead after arriving at hospital. His alleged attacker was arrested at the scene.

The agency says the Nara prefectural police drew up a security plan for Abe while he was in the city.

Agency officials say the prefecture's police officers and security personnel from Tokyo Metropolitan police were on the lookout during Abe's speech.

The officials did not disclose how many officers were on site, but security sources say several dozens were deployed. The number included one specially assigned personnel from the Tokyo police force and the prefecture's plain-clothed police officers.

Abe was reportedly being watched by the officers from all sides, even behind him.

But their efforts failed to prevent the former prime minister from being shot.

A video taken by a person near the scene shows the suspect slowly approaching Abe from behind. But police officers were not seen stopping him until gunshots were heard.

US President Joe Biden said the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo has left him "stunned, outraged, and deeply saddened."

Many other Americans are saying the same thing.

Biden visited the residence of the Japanese ambassador to pay his respects and offer condolences. He called Abe a "friend" and said the two worked closely together during his time as vice president. He said Abe's vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific "will endure."

Former President Barack Obama took to Twitter to express his shock. He said Abe was devoted to the "extraordinary alliance" shared by the US and Japan.

In 2016, Obama made a historic trip to the city of Hiroshima while the two were leaders. It was the first time a sitting US president visited the site of the World War Two atomic bombing.

Former President Donald Trump also took to social media. He called Abe "a man who loved and cherished his magnificent country." The two leaders enjoyed strong personal ties and a love for the game of golf.

People in New York City had a hard time believing the news.

One man said the most shocking thing about the assassination was that it actually happened in Japan.

A woman said gun violence should not be OK and accepted. She added that the shooting is horrible news and that she feels really sorry for Japan.

Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at the White House, military bases, public buildings, and US facilities overseas. Governors of several states, including Hawaii, Nebraska, and Utah, have followed suit.

Group of 20 foreign ministers have come away empty-handed from a tense meeting in Bali, Indonesia, that has highlighted the divide between the West and Russia over the situation in Ukraine.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were both present for the talks, which ended Friday. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba took part online by special invitation.

The diplomats discussed the global food crisis and soaring energy costs, both driven by the conflict in Ukraine. Delegates from Japan, the United States and European countries condemned Russia's invasion of the former Soviet state.

A senior Japanese foreign ministry official says Lavrov walked out of the session after delivering his statement, and was replaced by a deputy.

Lavrov told reporters that his Western counterparts strayed from the topics under discussion to a criticism of Russia as "aggressors."

Indonesia, the chair of the meeting, said the G20 has a responsibility to build bridges and be part of a solution to the conflict.

US entrepreneur Elon Musk has told Twitter he is terminating his agreement to take over the social media platform because the company "is in material breach of multiple provisions" of the deal.

The Tesla founder and CEO reached a deal in April to buy Twitter for 44 billion dollars.

But on Friday, the US Securities and Exchange Commission published a letter that lawyers for Musk sent to Twitter the same day to inform the firm he is walking away from the deal.

Musk's representatives wrote that Twitter has failed to provide information on the number of fake or spam accounts on the platform.

Musk has been seeking that information to determine the veracity of Twitter's claim that such accounts represent fewer than 5 percent of the total. He has said the information is necessary to assess the firm's corporate value.

Twitter quickly hit back. Chairman Bret Taylor said in a Twitter post that the company's board is committed to closing the transaction.

Taylor said the board "plans to pursue legal action to enforce the merger agreement."
