Soccer fans in Tokyo cheered loudly when Japan beat Spain in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The victory secured Japan's advance to the knockout stage.

About 420 supporters gathered at a viewing venue in Tokyo's Minato Ward to watch the crucial match early on Friday morning. The game would determine whether Japan's Samurai Blue team would advance or drop out.

The crowd sighed in disappointment when Spain took control with a goal in the 11th minute. But the sighs turned to cheers as Japan stepped up its offense.

Doan Ritsu's game-tying goal in the 48th minute sparked applause. Tanaka Ao's winning shot just three minutes later brought a standing ovation.

The fans' joy hit the roof at the victory. They hugged each other, with some in tears.

One supporter said he was sure Japan would win. He thanked the players for moving him so much.

A college student said he was truly impressed and hoped Japan would advance further. He said now that Japan had defeated Germany and Spain, the next goal would be the championship.

Another student said she was glad because she had not expected Japan to win. She said she prayed for Japan to keep its lead after scoring the second goal. She added that she will have a very good day at school.

European Council President Charles Michel and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to resume dialogue on human rights.

The two met in person for about three hours in Beijing on Thursday.

The leaders discussed protests that have recently erupted across China over its "zero-COVID" policy, which includes rigid restrictions on people's movement.

At a news conference after the meeting, Michel affirmed peaceful assembly as a fundamental right. China has not disclosed how Xi referred to the issue during the talks.

A spokesperson for Michel said the leader called on China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to help end Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

China's foreign ministry said President Xi responded that his country "will remain on the side of peace and continue to play a constructive role in its own way."

Both leaders also reportedly took up Russia's suggestion of potentially using nuclear weapons and agreed that nuclear threats are "irresponsible and highly dangerous."

A trial in Hong Kong of the founder of the Apple Daily newspaper has been postponed after the territory's government asked for Beijing's view on whether the defendant should be allowed to hire an overseas lawyer.

The issue revolves around the participation of the UK-based lawyer in the High Court trial of Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-defunct pro-democracy newspaper.

Lai is charged with violating China's national security law for Hong Kong by colluding with foreign forces.

Hong Kong's High Court and Court of Final Appeal approved Lai's choice of the lawyer. But the government's judicial authorities oppose the selection.

On Monday, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee asked the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress for a legal interpretation concerning the matter.

In response to the government's action, the High Court has postponed the trial, which was scheduled to start on Thursday.

Concerns are growing that overturning of the Hong Kong courts' decisions by the mainland committee could further erode the territory's judiciary independence that is supposedly protected under the "one country, two systems" framework.
