A surge in coronavirus cases is severely straining hospitals in Beijing and other major Chinese cities.

The virus has been spreading rapidly across the country since the government eased antivirus measures on December 7.

Health authorities in Qingdao in Shandong Province estimated on Friday that 490,000 to 530,000 people per day have contracted the virus. Many Japanese companies are operating in the city.

The manufacturing hub Dongguan in Guangdong Province on Friday reported 250,000 to 300,000 cases.

The cases pose an unprecedented challenge for medical workers.

A Beijing hospital official says about 500 patients daily are received at its emergency unit. That's 2.5 times the usual. About 20 percent of them have developed serious symptoms.

Other hospitals in the capital are setting up makeshift intensive care units and increasing the numbers of beds for patients with serious symptoms.

Hong Kong media are reporting on Chinese government documents leaked on social media.
They estimate that 248 million people have been infected between December first and 20th.
That's about 20 percent of the population.

Ukraine's presidential office said at least seven people were killed and 58 wounded in recent Russian attacks on Kherson.

Presidential office deputy head Kyrylo Tymoshenko announced the casualties on social media on Saturday. Ukraine retook the southern city from Russian forces last month.

Kherson regional prosecutors said Russian missiles targeted the densely populated city center.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post that the locations attacked "are not military facilities. This is not a war according to the rules defined. It is terror."

He criticized Russia for continuing attacks on Ukrainian civilians during the Christmas holiday.
Hours earlier, Russia's presidential office rejected the possibility of observing a truce during the Christmas and New Year period.

Some analysts warn that Russian forces may carry out large-scale attacks in February or early in 2023.

The Wall Street Journal quoted Ukrainian and European diplomats as noting that Ukraine is considering presenting a peace plan around February 24, the first anniversary of Russia's invasion.

Zelenskyy has already proposed a 10-point peace plan that includes Russia's withdrawal from all Ukrainian territory.

The new plan is expected to demand large concessions from Russia.
Analysts say Ukraine is trying to prepare for such truce negotiations on the basis of winning the war with a winter offensive.

Some Ukrainians have chosen to celebrate Christmas on December 25 this year, rejecting traditional celebrations on January 7 that are also observed in Russia.

Christmas Eve services were held on Saturday in many churches across Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian forces continue their attacks. Governor Yaroslav Yanushevych of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine said on social media that at least 10 people were killed in a Russian attack on Saturday.

Reuters posted footage taken in Bakhmut, a key battleground in the eastern region of Donetsk. The video shows soldiers decorating a Christmas tree with colorful tinsel and ornaments as loud explosions were heard in distance.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed in a video message released on Saturday that the country's struggle will continue without stopping. He said drones cannot extinguish the Christmas dawn.

The Russian side has ruled out the possibility of a truce during the Christmas and New Year period.

A senior Russian diplomat has warned Moldova that the country's closer military cooperation with the West could lead to disaster.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin talked about Moldova, a neighbor of Ukraine, in an interview with a Russian state media released on Saturday. He is in charge of relations with the Commonwealth of Independent States, or CIS.

Galuzin said that Moldova's closer cooperation with NATO does not add to its security, but rather brings it closer to catastrophe.

He also said the sad experience of Ukraine should be visible very clearly from Moldova.

Earlier, the head of the Moldovan intelligence agency told local media that Russia could invade the country early next year.

The pro-Russian breakaway region of Transdniestria in Moldova has unilaterally declared independence and has been hosting Russian forces.

Moldova's government under President Maia Sandu has been keeping a close eye on moves by the Russian military.

Japan's coast guard has said that two Chinese government ships which entered Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea on Thursday both left on Sunday morning.

The vessels navigated in waters off Japan's Okinawa Prefecture for 72 hours and 45 minutes. That marks the longest-ever continued intrusion of its kind since the Japanese government purchased some of the Senkakus from a private Japanese owner in 2012.

Japan Coast Guard officials said the ships entered waters off Taisho Island shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

They appeared to have followed the movement of a Japanese fishing boat, and were replaced by two other Chinese ships on Friday morning.

They left Japan's waters by 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, around the time the Japanese fishing boat left the area.

The Chinese ships' intrusion into Japan's territorial waters broke the previous record of a similar incident that lasted for 64 hours and 17 minutes between July 5 and 7 of this year.

The Japanese coast guard remained on alert after warning the vessels against re-entering Japan's waters.

Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

French investigative authorities suspect Friday's fatal attacks on Kurdish facilities that killed three people in Paris was racially motivated.

Prosecutors on Saturday revealed the suspected motive behind the incident in which a man opened fire at a Kurdish cultural center and other nearby locations.

Police arrested a 69-year old man, a French national, at the scene. French media say the man admitted to investigators that he is a racist.

Meanwhile in a Paris square on Saturday, hundreds of people joined a rally organized by a Kurdish organization held in protest against the incident.

Some protesters clashed with police after they threw objects, despite efforts by members of the organization to stop them. Police used tear gas in response.

A strong winter pressure pattern around Japan has brought heavy snow to areas from Hokkaido through Kyushu. Caution is advised against traffic disruption as well as icy roads.

Heavy snow fell from Thursday through Saturday, mainly in mountainous regions. Some flatland areas, such as the cities of Nagoya and Kochi, have also seen snow accumulation.

Periods of snowy weather since December 17 have caused snow to accumulate more than three times the level of an average year in some areas, especially in the mountainous regions along the Sea of Japan.

As of Sunday morning, 1.18 meters of snow on the ground was recorded in Engaru Town in Hokkaido, 97 centimeters in Oguni Town in Yamagata Prefecture, and 67 centimeters in Gujo City in Gifu Prefecture.

The current spell of heavy snow has peaked, but the winter pressure pattern continues. It is expected to bring intermittent heavy snow in mountainous areas from Hokkaido through Kyushu.

A series of deaths linked with snow-related accidents have been reported this winter in Japan. Caution is advised against snow sliding off rooftops as well as accidents involving people trying to remove snow.

People are urged to wear safety belts when going onto rooftops and not to work alone. They also need to exercise caution against icicles and snow that can fall from eaves.

Officials are calling for caution against possible avalanches in areas with a high accumulation of snow.

In a holiday tradition, Santa Claus is being tracked by US and Canadian air defense officials as he delivers presents to children around the world.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, operates a special website that shows Santa Claus in flight on his sleigh being pulled by reindeer.

The tracker showed him traveling over Japan near Mount Fuji and Tokyo Skytree at about 11:00 p.m. local time Saturday.

NORAD officials say that Santa was seen with his flowing white beard this year. During the previous two Christmas seasons, he had to wear a mask due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials say Santa started out his mission with 60,000 tons of presents on his sleigh. He apparently arrives at children's homes only when they are asleep.

NORAD normally tracks missiles. It started the Christmas tradition in 1955, when children called the command by mistake hoping to talk to Santa Claus.

There are more than 1,200 volunteers taking calls from children and answering e-mails from all over the world, this year.
