China's government has kept the daily count of coronavirus deaths at zero since reporting two fatalities on December 3. But local media say people with COVID-19 are dying as infections surge in the country.
The virus has been spreading in Beijing and other major cities since the government relaxed COVID restrictions on December 7.
A local media outlet reported that a 37-year-old former soccer player with diabetes died on December 12 after being infected.
Another outlet says a 74-year-old man who had tested positive died of pneumonia on Thursday.
At a funeral home in Beijing, dozens of vehicles carrying bodies were seen lining up for cremation.
Sources say workers there have tested positive, and it is taking more time than usual to cremate the bodies.
But Taiwan media quote a funeral industry worker as saying many people have died after being infected in recent days, most of them elderly.

Less than 9 percent of registered voters turned out for the Saturday's parliamentary election in Tunisia. Main opposition parties had called for a boycott of the polls as they say the vote is part of President Kais Saied's efforts to consolidate power.
The country's electoral authority said that the provisional turnout was 8.8 percent at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday when the poll stations were closed. 161 seats are being contested.
Saied led efforts to reform the constitution earlier this year. It now gives the president power to appoint a prime minister without parliamentary approval.
It also dilutes parliament's powers, making it subordinate to the presidency with little sway over government.
Opposition parties call the voting a passage leading to a one-man rule, reversing the country's democracy.
Saied urged Tunisians to cast their ballot after voting at a polling station in the capital Tunis, calling the election a historic day.
Tunisia has been viewed as the sole success of the Arab Spring pro-democracy movement after the nation's former autocratic government collapsed in 2011 following public protests.
But increasingly concerns are being expressed that it could return to an authoritarian system.

A railway operator in northern Japan has begun running train service along the scenic coastline equipped with a table-shaped heater called kotatsu.
Sanriku Railway in Iwate Prefecture started the seasonal service this weekend.
About 20 passengers were seated at 12 such heater tables as the kotatsu train departed from Kuji station on Saturday.
A boxed lunch featuring sea urchin, abalones and other local delicacies was available as customers enjoyed winter scenes of the rugged coastline.
The train made a brief stop at a scenic bridge for a photo-taking opportunity.
Entertainers dressed as a local mythological demon appeared on the train to the excitement of the passengers.
A passenger in his 30s from Hokkaido said he has taken a variety of trains across Japan but the Sanriku Railway kotatsu service was like no other.
The stationmaster at Kuji says he would be happy if the kotatsu-train service will help people experience the beauty of the coastline.
The operator will run the train on weekends and holidays through March 26 and the first three days of the New Year.

People in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv are preparing for the Christmas and the New Year's holidays, despite ongoing attacks by the Russian military. Some are buying Christmas trees sold on the streets.
A 12-meter tree was erected at a square in front of St Sophia Cathedral in the city center on Saturday.
On top of the tree is the Ukrainian coat of arms shaped like a traditional trident. It will be illuminated with blue and yellow, the colors of the country's flag. A generator will supply power to the tree.
But the ongoing Russian attacks have left the festivities visibly subdued. The tree is about a half the height of last year's. Mayor Vitali Klitschko banned Christmas markets from selling food and drinks.
A man in his 30s came to see the tree with his daughter.
He said the tree is beautiful and welcome. He said nobody should steal their holiday celebration.
A woman in her 50s says the subdued tree seems like the right thing, given the circumstances.
She says she thinks the national emblem on top of the tree symbolizes the country's unity and victory.
