South Korean prosecutors have arrested a senior security official of former President Moon Jae-in's administration over the handling of the death of a fisheries official two years ago.
Former National Security Adviser Suh Hoon was arrested on Saturday for suspected abuse of power.
Suh is suspected of having ordered security officials to delete intelligence reports that contradicted the conclusion that the official died trying to defect to North Korea, presented by Moon's administration.
The official, a crew member of a fishery inspection vessel, was fatally shot by North Korea's military in September 2020 in the Yellow Sea, west of the Korean Peninsula.
South Korean coast guard officials initially said he was planning to defect. But they retracted the comment in June this year, saying there was no evidence to suggest that.
South Korean media say prosecutors are investigating allegations that Moon's administration sought to cover up the incident to avoid a deterioration of ties with the North. There is speculation that Moon may also be subject to a probe depending on the outcome of the investigation of Suh.

Members of the British Parliament have made an official visit to Taiwan for the first time in 16 years. The delegation met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday.
The bipartisan delegation is led by Alicia Kearns, who chairs the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. It is visiting Taiwan for five days through December 3.
Despite opposition from Beijing regarding the visit, Kearns said in the meeting with Tsai that "it is entirely right that democracies engage in inter-parliamentary dialogue to better understand one another."
Kearns also noted that Britain will not only remain strong in its support to European neighbors, but will look beyond. She said that the British people "recognize and salute our valued friends across the Indo-Pacific as we lean in for mutual support," stressing the importance of reinforcing ties with Taiwan.
President Tsai acknowledged a recent speech made by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in which he expressed concern over geopolitical changes. She was apparently referring to a speech on Monday in which Prime Minister Sunak had said the "golden era of relations with China" was over.
Tsai said, "As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will do its utmost to ensure regional peace and stability."
Britain has recently been changing its approach to China and gradually making clear its stance of placing more importance on Taiwan. Last month, Trade Policy Minister Greg Hands visited Taiwan and held talks with the Taiwanese president.

The policy chief of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party is set to visit Taiwan.
Hagiuda Koichi plans to begin a three-day trip on December 10.
It will be the first visit to Taiwan in 19 years by a person who holds one of the LDP's three key posts of secretary-general, policy chief or head of the General Council, except for the period when the party was not in power.
In 2003, Aso Taro, LDP's policy chief at the time, traveled to Taiwan.
Japan and Taiwan have no diplomatic relations.
Hagiuda will give a speech on security issues at a gathering in Taipei on Japan-Taiwan relations.
He will also meet with officials from the semiconductor industry.
Arrangements are underway for talks with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Hagiuda is expected to use the visit to appeal for stronger cooperation between the two sides amid China's growing military pressure on Taiwan.
Hagiuda is known to have been close to former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, who had placed importance on ties with Taiwan. The policy chief apparently wants to show that he will carry on the late prime minister's stance.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu is visiting Japan this week. In an exclusive interview with NHK, she said continuing solidarity with her country's neighbor Ukraine is crucial to limiting Russia's power.
Sandu has been in Japan since Thursday. She said Russia's energy resources are "being weaponized" against those who don't support the country's invasion.
She said, "We still have a contract with Gazprom, but they decided unilaterally to cut by half gas supply. And we are buying gas on market but the international prices are extremely high. For Moldova, this meant increasing the energy curves seven times just in the last 12 months."
Sandu said she has called on Japan's government for financial support. She also said she will explore possibilities to cooperate with Japanese investors to find alternative and renewable energies.
The EU granted Moldova and Ukraine candidate status for membership in June. The president said she hopes to join the union as soon as possible to protect her country's democracy and freedom.
She said, "We believe that once we become part of the EU, we're going to feel much safer in the family of the EU states and of course will have greater opportunities to develop economically but also feel safer in a small and vulnerable country."
Sandu also stressed that Ukraine is fighting to defend not only its own freedom, but also Moldova's, and her country will continue to support its neighbor.
