From our studios here in Shibuya, Tokyo, this is NHK Newsline. I'm James Tengan.

The Associated Press says the White House has violated freedom of the press by blocking one of its reporters from the Oval Office. The news agency says it happened because it refused to follow Trump's executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The AP says its journalist was denied access to an executive order signing event on Tuesday. The agency says the White House had warned this would happen unless it changed its editorial guidelines.
Trump's unilateral renaming of the Gulf of Mexico was among his first executive orders. The AP published a response days later saying its style guidewould keep the original name. It says as a global news agency, it must ensure place names are easily recognizable to all audiences. The White House Correspondents Association has urged the Trump administration to change course. It says the White House cannot dictate how news organizations report the news.
Multiple US media outlets say the Walt Disney Company is changing its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The move comes as President Trump is terminating the previous administration's DEI program.
The initiatives introduced by the Biden administration include efforts to attract talent from various backgrounds by setting numerical targets.
Reports say Disney is replacing the diversity and inclusion factor for executive compensation planning with its new talent strategy factor.
The firm also says the new strategy represents what it calls an evolution of important concepts.
During his first week back in office, Trump signed executive orders aimed at ending the DEI programs in the federal government. A growing number of major U.S. firms, including Amazon and Walmart, are now turning away from these initiatives.

The possible path to ending the fighting between Russia and Ukraine has taken another twist. In an interview with Fox News, Trump made controversial comments that could be interpreted as accepting the cession of Ukrainian territory.

They may make a deal. They may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday.

It comes as the US explores a deal to gain Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for continued military support.
Trump highlighted oil and gas, rare earth minerals, and other natural resources.
He says the US has spent billions on Ukraine's defense and wants its money secured. Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia tells Reuters weapons shipments approved under the previous administration are still flowing to Ukraine. Keith Kellogg is expected to visit Kiev sometime soon.
And it's expected President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington in the near future for talks with Trump.

We are preparing a clear schedule of meetings with our key partners, America, Europe, the Islamic world. We have specific dates.

Trump says he believes the US is making progress in its talks with Russia to end the fighting. He's reportedly already spoken on the phone with President Vladimir Putin.
Achieving A ceasefire is easier said than done, of course. NHK World's Matsumoto Yuzuru looked into whether Ukraine's vision squares with what the US is open to. I spoke with him about it earlier.

Yuzuru, we know one of Ukraine's main goals is to prevent another Russian invasion. What is it asking for on that front?

It wants outside help to ensure its security that appears to reflect what the public wants too.
A local think tank recently conducted a poll of 1,000 Ukrainians. 64% say there should be no negotiations with Russia unless Ukraine receives security guarantees from the West. I asked an expert on foreign policy about this. She says joining NATO is the best way for Ukraine to get what it wants.

This, more than any other measure, will not only make Russia lose its will to fight and stop the war against Ukraine, but also make it understand that Ukraine will never become part of Russia.

Ukraine's president has strongly pushed for this. Leaders of the alliance say that they will come, but it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
So the first priority of ceasefire negotiations will likely be to get other kinds of security guarantees. Those may include peacekeeping forces coming from Europe and bilateral security pacts.

Yuzuru, what do you think Trump will bring up during his possible meeting with Zelenskyy?

He's likely to discuss that deal on Ukraine supplying rare earths and other resources to the U.S. It would be in return for continued military aid. But there are questions around how long that would last. Michael Watts is Trump's national security advisor. He said earlier this week that Europe should take the lead in security guarantees for Ukraine.
But that expert we heard from a moment ago says a commitment by the US is crucial to prevent future aggression by Russia.
Ukrainians are increasingly worn out from the prolonged fighting, but the most important battle may be just ahead.

Japan's Coast Guard says it has confirmed that a Chinese buoy that was installed in Japan's exclusive economic zone is no longer there.
The buoy had been floating in the area since 2023, even though the Japanese government demanded that China remove it.
Coast Guard officials said the buoy was spotted in July of 2023 in waters northwest of Okinawa Prefecture's Senkaku Islands in southern Japan. They said they issued a warning about the buoy to vessels navigating in the area in 2023. After confirming that the buoy was no longer there, the Coast Guard notified vessels of the change. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday that the installment of the buoy was consistent with both domestic and international laws. He also indicated that China had removed it. He added, The buoy has completed its task at the site. According to the actual need of science and observation, relevant Chinese agencies have implemented voluntary and technical adjustments regarding the buoy.
China's installment of buoys in the waters around Japan has been an issue of contention between the two countries. A new buoy was recently detected inside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone, south of Okinawa Prefecture's Yonaguni Island.
Japan's Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi demanded that China immediately remove it when he spoke with his counterpart Wang Yi in China in December.
Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

Police in Tokyo have arrested three people in connection with suspected money laundering. They're looking into the details of the case, in which about 50 billion yen, or about $325 million, passed through bank accounts managed by the suspects.
Hayashi Meio, a corporate executive from Tokyo's Adachi Ward, and two others were arrested on suspicion of violating a law against organized crime.
The police say the suspects are believed to have transferred about $417,000 to bank accounts to conceal the money's origin. The suspects allegedly targeted people, including a man in his 70s from Kanagawa near Tokyo, who was swindled through a social media investment fraud.
Investigators suspect the three, at one point, managed about 300 corporate bank accounts. The suspects are also thought to have received and laundered money from fraud groups based not only in Japan, but also abroad, including China and Vietnam.
The police have yet to say whether the suspects have admitted to the allegations.

More ice and snow are hitting the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, our meteorologist Jonathan Oh has the details in world weather.

Hello. We have been seeing a pattern of low pressure systems pushing toward the eastern side of the United States over the past couple of days, and one after the other, it's brought not only snowy weather, but some locations. We're talking about winter storm conditions leading to ice and freezing rain, and I want to show you some video that's coming out from the region. Because it's a bit of a mess. A snowstorm hit the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday, prompting officials to issue winter storm warnings from Kentucky to New Jersey. Parts of Virginia and West Virginia reported more than 30 centimeters of snow in 24 hours, the governor of Virginia declaring on his official website that the state was under a state of emergency, and Associated Press saying that the schools and offices in the area were closed, while state police reported hundreds of accidents on icy roads with dozens of injuries. The situation continues into Wednesday. We have one low that's pushing off the northeastern coast of the United States, but we have this moisture coming from the South, from Texas into the Deep South, where we're going to be looking at the possibility of some strong to possibly even severe thunderstorms. Another little back toward the rocks will really clip its way and make its way toward the the Great Lakes area. And so that cold air mixing in will lead to snow for the Great Lakes with right South of there.
The warmth will collide with it and that's when we're going to see that mix of snow and ice and freezing rain. So it's gonna be messy on the roadways. If you're in the affected region, you don't want to be on the road. Stay indoors as much as possible. Snow extending from Denver into Chicago, Toronto looking a high of -4 as we go through today on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, we saw a tiny bit of a break when it came to the winter weather situation along the northeastern portions of Japan, but that's going to really kick back up as we head to Thursday as another low cross over the Sea of Japan and the winds are going to really whip up once again too. So you may be dealing with the possibility of wind damage all along the Sea of Japan side of the country as that low swings on through warm air surging from the South bringing temperatures to 14 with sunny skies. in Tokyo as you go through Thursday. Hope you have a good day wherever you are.

The website for Japan's Imperial Household Agency in Tokyo has been given a major makeover. Visitors can go on a virtual tour of parts of the historic building and enjoy an immersive look at the interior.
The homepage includes 360-degree views of five rooms. They are the hall for state banquets, the entry hall where foreign dignitaries are greeted, and other locations. The revamp by the Imperial Household Agency is the first in 15 years. It follows the launch of a public relations office that utilizes private sector know-how. The updated website offers schedules and news conference records of the Emperor and other senior members of the Imperial family, as well as explanations of the Imperial system and court culture.
It also provides information on opening hours of the Imperial Palace and the Kyoto Imperial Palace.

And with that, we conclude this edition of NHK Newsline. I'm James Tangan. Bye for now.
