U.S. President Donald Trump says he is implementing tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China. The new measures will go into effect on Tuesday.
Trump had promised to impose a wide range of tariffs soon after taking office.
According to Trump's announcement on social media, goods from Canada will be subject to a 25% tariff, with 10% on energy products. A 25% tariff will also apply to imports from Mexico. And goods from China will be hit with an additional 10%. Trump wrote that this was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. He has stressed the aim of the move is to protect Americans. The White House says the president is taking decisive action to protect Americans from an epidemic of fentanyl overdoses. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his country will respond with 25% tariffs on U.S. goods.
We've had our differences in the past, but we've always found a way to get past them. As I've said before, If President Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us.
Trudeau warns that Washington's tariffs on Canadian goods will hurt the US economy, driving up the costs of many kinds of products. Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum wrote on social media that she has directed the economy minister to implement both tariff and non tariff measures to defend Mexico's interests. She hit back at Washington's accusation that the Mexican government has an alliance with organized crime. She says her country is not seeking confrontation with the US, but rather dialogue. China also responded in a statement on Sunday. A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson expressed strong dissatisfaction in opposition. He said the unilateral additional tariffs seriously violate WTO rules and disrupt normal economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. He also said the U.S. should face issues directly and hold candid dialogue based on the principles of equality and mutual respect, and strengthen cooperation and appropriately manage differences of opinions. A state-run Xinhua news agency reported that the U.S. measure has drawn widespread opposition both domestically and internationally. Instead, the Chinese government has stated its position many times that tariff measures are not conducive to the interests of either China or the U.S., nor to the rest of the world.
