Welcome to NHK Newsline. I'm Gene Otani in Tokyo.

The US Federal Aviation Administration says six people were on board the plane that crashed in Philadelphia in the eastern US state of Pennsylvania on Friday.
US media outlets say the plane crashed at around 6:30 PM into an area lined with houses and commercial facilities. They say multiple casualties have been reported near the crash site.

But I just see the plane is getting lower and lower and lower. It nipped the house.
When it nipped the house, it hit a couple of cars. Boom. I've never seen nothing like that a day in my life.

The aircraft is reportedly a medical transport plane. 4 crew members as well as a child patient and an escort were on board. Citing local police, CBS News said several casualties have been reported on the ground and that multiple houses and vehicles sustained damage.
Emergency crews are responding to the incident by blocking the roads. They are calling on residents to stay away from the area.

Investigators in the US are looking into the cause of Wednesday's collision between a passenger jet in a military helicopter.
They're recovering evidence and the remains of victims from the site of the accident just outside Washington.
All 67 people on board the two aircraft are believed to have died. The top fire official says 41 sets of remains have been recovered and 28 have been identified. He says recovery crews won't stop until every victim is found.

We expect to recover all of the bodies. That's why our teams are still working.
We're going to have to work with the salvage company to do some of that work.

Officials at the Federal Aviation Administration are ready to take action.
They've reportedly ordered most helicopter routes near Reagan National Airport to be closed indefinitely.
U.S. President Donald Trump has weighed in with his thoughts on the cause of the crash. You had a helicopter that was, the Blackhawk was too high. It was above the 200 limit by double. It shouldn't have been there. And there were some other mistakes made too, and I pointed them out also, and I was right on all of it.

U.S. media say military helicopters flying over the airport are required to stay below an altitude of 200 feet, or about 61 meters.

Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro has held talks with a special envoy sent by the U.S. president. This comes despite the fact that Washington refuses to recognize Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate president.
Maduro met with Richard Grinnell in the capital, Caracas. The Venezuelan government says the two discussed a deal on migrants and agreed on the need to change the direction of bilateral relations. The White House press secretary said Grinnell was dispatched to discuss repatriation of Venezuelan gang members detained in the U.S. and the return of U.S. detainees in Venezuela.
Later in the day, Grinnell said on social media that he was heading back to the United States with six American detainees. Attention is focused on whether the dispatch of the special envoy will change the relationship between the two countries.

U.S. President Trump looks set to carry through on his pledge to impose a wide range of tariffs on several countries, including America's two closest neighbors. The White House press secretary said Trump plans to implement the measures on Saturday. The president has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on imports fromMexico and Canada and additional 10% tariffs on imports from China.

Mr. President, is there anything China, Canada and Mexico can do tonight to forestall your implementation of tariffs tomorrow?

No, nothing. Not right now, no.

Trump suggested his administration will impose additional import tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. He didn't say when these would start, nor what countries would be targeted. The president also said tariffs on oil and gas will start around February 18 end. Semiconductors and pharmaceuticals will also be targeted.
Trump said the tariffs are going to make the U.S. very rich and very strong.

Saturday marks four years since Myanmar's military staged a coup. The country has been mired in conflict ever since. And humanitarian concerns are rising.
The junta has kept. Myanmar under a state of emergency ever since taking power in 2021. The military is embroiled in a prolonged battle with pro-democracy forces and armed ethnic minority groups.
A human rights group in Myanmar says more than 6,000 civilians have been killed since the coup. The United Nations says the number of internally displaced people will likely exceed 4.5 million this year.
State media reported on Friday that the National Defense and Security Councilhas decided to extend the state of emergency for another six months. That's the seventh extension since the coup.
The military has promised to hold an election in 2025 and transition to a civilian government, but this requires the lifting of the emergency declaration. Now that there is no prospect of an election for the time being, the fighting may intensify.

A senior official of the U.N. Agency for Palestinian RefugeesSays it will continue humanitarian support in the Gaza Strip, despite being banned from operating in Israel.

We will never stop our services. We would like to work with other aid organizations and keep delivering the most necessary aid to the people in Gaza.

UNRWA Director of Health Seita Akihiro told NHK aid is still being provided in the enclave and other places, but added the ban would hinder efforts to deliver supplies. The measure took effect on Thursday. Israel accuses some UNRWA staff of taking part in the Hamas attacks in October 2023. The agency's office in Jerusalem was closed, with graffiti sprayed on the signboard.

Questions hang over the whereabouts of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces. They were helping fend off a Ukrainian offensive, but a report in the New York Times says they've disappeared from the front lines.
US and Ukrainian officials are quoted as saying the North Koreans have not been seen since seen for about two weeks. They also say the troops may return after receiving more training or after Russia finds a way to avoid such heavy casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in January about 4,000 North Koreans had been killed or wounded. About 11,000 North Korean troops are said to have been deployed to Kursk in western Russia, where Ukraine has launched a cross-border offensive.

Japanese weather officials forecast heavy snow in mountainous areas in the Kanto Koshin region on Sunday. They say snow may also accumulate in central Tokyo.
In the 24 hours through Sunday noon, snowfall could reach 10 centimeters in the Koshin region, 5 centimeters in the Hakone area, 2 centimeters in the Tama and Shichibu areas, as well as 1 centimeter in northern Kanto and the flatlands of southern Kanto, including Tokyo's 23 wards. Snowfall in these regions is expected to continue through Monday noon. But the Japan Meteorological Agency says the timing and amount of snow can vary widely. Officials also say public transportation could be disrupted if snow piles up in central Tokyo or other flatlands.

Those were the main stories for thishour.
