BREAKING NEWS
MULTIPLE EXPLOSIONS IN VENEZUELAN CAPITAL

The Venezuelan government says a series of military and civilian facilities in the capital, Caracas, have been hit by explosions, and it's blaming the United States.

Reuters news agency has released video footage from Caracas that shows what appears to be smoke and fire rising from several buildings.

The Venezuelan government says it denounces and rejects the military aggression, which is a clear violation of the UN Charter.

It says the move threatens peace and stability, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

TESLA SLIPS TO SECOND PLACE IN GLOBAL EV MARKET

The US electric vehicle giant Tesla reports that new car sales last year dropped for a second straight year.

This means that China's BYD has become the world's largest EV manufacturer.

Tesla announced on Friday that it sold 1.63 million new EVs worldwide in 2025.

That's down about 8.5% from the previous year.

One day earlier, BYD announced that the company's EV sales in 2025 totaled two and a quarter million units.

Tesla's poor showing comes after initial demand for the vehicles ran its course and US consumers rushed to take advantage of federal EV tax credits before they were abolished at the end of September.

Tesla's sales were also hurt by CEO Elon Musk's decision to become involved in US politics, which led to a global boycott of Tesla products.

In October, Tesla launched a new low-price model, only to be met by fierce competition from BYD and other automakers that are promoting models in a similar price range.

TRUMP HINTS US WILL INTERVENE IF IRAN KILLS PROTESTERS

President Trump has warned Iran against killing what he called peaceful protesters, suggesting his country may intervene to rescue them.

Iran has seen a wave of anti-government protests since late December over rising prices and other economic issues.

Iran's currency has plummeted in value due to Western sanctions and other factors ramping up inflation.

The protests have spread across the country, with demonstrators clashing with police and security forces.

Iran's first news agency says six people have been killed and many injured.

Trump wrote on social media Friday that if Iran violently kills peaceful protesters, the US will come to their rescue.

He went on to say, We are locked and loaded and ready to go.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaei Baghaei said on social media that Iranians will allow no foreign intervention whatsoever.

MORE HEAVY SNOW FORECAST FOR EASTERN, NORTHERN JAPAN

Japan's meteorological agency is warning that a blast of cold air is set to bring more heavy snow to northern and eastern Japan.

The cold snap, combined with a winter pressure pattern, buried parts of the country in snow on Friday and Saturday.

Parts of Niigata's Itoigawa city were 81 centimeters deep in snow Saturday morning.

In Gunma's Minamikawa town, it reached 76 centimeters.

The winter pressure pattern is easing now, but the cold mass remains stubbornly in place.

That means on and off snow will continue, especially along the Sea of Japan coast in eastern and northern regions.

People in mountainous parts of Niigata Prefecture and northern Kanto can expect 40 centimeters to fall in the 24-hour period through Sunday morning.

Authorities are urging caution, saying snow and ice could disrupt traffic.

They're also warning of possible avalanches and blackouts as snow weighs down utility cables.

I hope we continue communicating closely.

The two leaders spoke on Friday in what was their first phone talks since November.

Takaichi says she extended her congratulations to Trump in light of the United States' 250th anniversary this year.

She also says they agreed to strengthen economic and security cooperation and to work with like-minded nations such as South Korea.

Takaichi did not reveal whether they discussed China, but she did say they discussed international affairs with a focus on the Indo-Pacific.

NOBEL WINNER NIHON HIDANKYO MARKS 70TH ANNIVERSARY

A group representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki marks the 70th anniversary of its founding this year.

Nihon Hidankyo advocates on behalf of the atomic bomb survivors, known as Hibakusha.

The group won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024.

The organization says it will step up its campaign to abolish nuclear weapons by making more people aware of the reality of the 1945 catastrophes.

The group says that since it was awarded the Nobel Prize, it's had more invitations at home and abroad for Hibakusha to speak about their experiences.

In April, Nihon Hidangkyo will send a delegation to a review conference at the UN on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

We must assert that the current world situation is heading in the wrong direction.

Please look at what happened in 1945.

00:06:19 (Yuko Fukushima)

Hamasami also referred to Japan's three non-nuclear principles under which the government commits to not possessing nuclear weapons, not producing them, and not permitting their introduction into the country.

00:06:33 (Hamasumi Jiro / Secretary General, Nihon Hidankyo)

We will not allow nuclear weapons. We will not allow a nuclear war.

Our stance will remain unchanged.

Hamasumi said Nihong Hidang-kyo has called on the government to stick to the principles and make them law.

SWISS NEW YEAR BLAZE
SPARKLERS 'LIKELY TO BLAME' FOR DEADLY FIRE AT SKI RESORT

Swiss investigators are working to determine the cause of a deadly fire that broke out on New Year's Day. They say the blaze was likely triggered by sparklers lit inside the bar.

Local police say the fire at a bar in the ski resort of Cran-Montenot killed about 40 people and injured 119.

They believe it began when sparklers attached to champagne bottles came too close to the ceiling.

A 19-year-old man who was there when the fire broke out described what he saw.

00:07:24 (a 19-year-old man)

Fireworks on champagne bottles set fire to the roof that was made out of isolating foam.

Footage reportedly taken by the man's younger brother just before the fire show the bottles being carried aloft. Another clip, taken later, shows the ceiling on fire.

00:07:44 (the man's younger brother)

And I screamed to everyone, get out. I took my girlfriend as far as I could up the stairs.

And there was so much people in the stairs that I lost her arm.

Terrifying. I felt like, you know, war scene. like a raid, I don't know, terrifying.

I saw people, burn people on the ground. I grabbed one out.

00:08:12 (Yuko Fukushima)

Some of the injured have been taken to nearby countries, including France and Italy, for treatment.

Authorities say they have questioned the bar owners and are examining safety management measures, such as the placement of fire extinguishers and whether evacuation routes were properly secured.

Those were the main stories for this hour. This is NHK Newsline.
