US WARSHIP DOCKS AT CAMBODIA NAVAL BASE

A US Navy warship has made a port call at a naval base in Cambodia, which was expanded with financial support from China.

The US Navy says the USS Cincinnati arrived at the Rheem Naval Base in southwest Cambodia on Saturday.

The Associated Press and other media outlets say this is the first time a US Navy warship has docked at the facility since the expansion last year.

The United States has expressed concern that China might use the base for military purposes in return for its assistance.

The US Navy says the Cincinnati's visit to Cambodia celebrates the continued partnership between the two countries.

Observers say the port call appears to be part of efforts by the US to increase cooperation with Cambodia and keep in check China's maritime activities.

HEAVY SNOWFALL CONTINUES ACROSS JAPAN

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a heavy snow alert for Tottori and Ishikawa prefectures, warning of rapid accumulation in some areas.

The peak is passing along the Sea of Japan coast from Hokuriku to Sanin, but it's expected to snow intermittently in northern Japan and Niigata Prefecture.

The agency says a strong winter pressure pattern continues to bring precipitation, mainly to areas along the Sea of Japan coast, from Hokkaido to the Chugoku region.

As of 11 a.m., Kanazawa City received 64 centimeters, more than nine times the yearly average.

The meteorological agency says the snow is coming down so heavily that it's difficult to remove.

Elsewhere, as of 11 a.m. on Sunday, accumulated snow reached 264 centimeters in the village of Sumon in Niigata Prefecture and 128 centimeters in Aomori City.

Some areas along the Sea of Japan coast have seen more than triple their yearly averages of snowfall.

They say plains in Aichi and Mie prefectures may see a rare accumulation as clouds will move toward the Pacific side of Japan.

The Japan Sea polar air mass convergence zone, which produced belt-shaped snow clouds, is moving south while weakening along the Sea of Japan coast in western Japan.

The peak of heavy snow has passed from Hokuriku to Sanin, where heavy precipitation was recorded in a short period of time.

Officials say heavy snow is expected to continue through Monday morning.

Up to 60 centimeters could blanket Niigata, 50 centimeters in Hokkaido and 40 centimeters in the Hokuriku and the Kantokoshi region in a 24-hour period through Monday morning.

In the Tohoku region, mainly in Aomori Prefecture, there's a possibility of snow heavy enough to trigger an alert starting Sunday evening.

US FEDERAL AGENTS INVOLVED IN FATAL SHOOTING IN MINNESOTA

A shooting involving US federal law enforcement has killed a man in Minnesota.

Earlier this month, a woman was fatally shot by a federal immigration agent in the Midwestern state, sparking protests.

Police say officers rushed to the scene in Minneapolis on Saturday to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds. The man was later confirmed dead.

Police say he was a 37-year-old resident of the city and is believed to be an American citizen.

The Department of Homeland Security claims an individual with a handgun approached US Border Patrol officers as agents for the department were seeking an illegal alien wanted for violent assault.

It also says the officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but he violently resisted.

Police say the deceased man was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry.

Authorities are investigating what led up to the shooting.

President Donald Trump wrote on social media that the gun was loaded and ready to go.

He also questioned why local police were not protecting federal agents.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the shooting, saying the federal occupation of Minnesota is no longer a matter of immigration enforcement.

It's a campaign of organized brutality against the people of our state.

And today, that campaign claimed another life.

The governor reiterated his call for the US president to remove the force from Minnesota, saying that they are sowing chaos and violence.

He also urged people to demonstrate peacefully. The latest shooting has drawn many protesters to the scene, further escalating tensions with federal authorities.

WAR IN UKRAINE
ZELENSKYY SAYS UKRAINE, RUSSIA AND US TALKS 'CONSTRUCTIVE'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says peace talks involving delegations from his country, Russia and the United States, have been constructive.

The first trilateral talks began on Friday in the United Arab Emirates' capital, Abu Dhabi, and lasted for two days.

The representatives are believed to have discussed territorial issues, including control of eastern regions of Ukraine. However, Kyiv and Moscow remain far apart on the issue.

Zelenskyy posted on social media on Saturday that the central focus of the discussions was the possible parameters for ending the war.

He also wrote, The American side raised the issue of potential formats for formalizing the parameters for ending the war, as well as the security conditions required to achieve this.

A US official told reporters that the next round of negotiations will start on February 1.

The official described the decision to hold further talks as a pretty very good sign, while noting that there is a lot of preparatory work before the talks with regard to territorial issues.

Meanwhile, Russia's state-run TASS news agency quoted a source as saying it cannot be said that there are no results.

However, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said on Friday that Russia will continue its special military operation unless its demands are met, including territorial and other concessions by Ukraine.

LANDSLIDE IN INDONESIA KILLS 8, MORE THAN 80 MISSING

Rescuers on the Indonesian island of Java are searching for survivors after a landslide triggered by torrential rains. At least eight people are dead and more than 80 missing.

The country's National Disaster Management Agency says the landslide occurred on Saturday in the West Bandung district of West Java province.

Rescue operations continue for an estimated 82 people amid deep mud.

This is the first time for a big landslide. Before, only small floods from the local river happened. This time, it came from the forest.

Authorities urged residents in the areas to remain vigilant if they hear rumbling or see soil movement.

Indonesia's meteorological agency had been urging people on the islands of Java, Bali, and elsewhere to be on the alert for possible heavy rain through the end of January.
