Heatstroke Alerts Issued for Much of Japan
Temperatures have soared to dangerous levels across Japan.
Authorities have issued heat stroke alerts for many areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says temperatures surpassed 38 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country on Monday.
The Tokyo Fire Department says dozens of people were taken to the hospital with suspected heat stroke. The heat wave is expected to continue all week.
Temperatures could top 40 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday in the Tokai region and other areas.
People are advised to use air conditioners, stay hydrated and consume adequate amounts of salt.
They're also advised to avoid being outdoors for long periods and to pay attention to infants and the elderly.
The meteorological agency says the rainy season appears to have ended in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions.
Spain Beats Argentina for 2nd World Cup Title
Now in the men's soccer World Cup final, Spain has beaten defending champion Argentina 1-0 to win its second World Cup title.
The match between the world's number two-ranked Spain and the top-ranked Argentina took place at New York-New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.
About 30,000 people attended a public viewing event in Barcelona.
Spain dominated possession from the start and repeatedly attacked from the right flank, led by 19-year-old forward Amin Yamal and midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez.
With both teams displaying solid defense, the game was scoreless at the 90-minute mark and went into extra time.
Ferran Torres broke the deadlock by scoring the decisive goal for Spain in the 106th minute.
Spain became champions for the first time in four tournaments, while Argentina fell short of becoming the third men's team to win back-to-back titles.
Spain was in control for much of the final, keeping Argentine star Lionel Messi from playing his game.

Messi ended the tournament with eight goals. France's Kylian Mbappe scored 10 goals, becoming the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice.

Japan to Give Cambodia Defense Equipment Under OSA Program
The Japanese government has decided to provide Cambodia with defense equipment under its security assistance framework.
A document-signing ceremony was held at Cambodia's defense ministry on Sunday.
Japan's ambassador to Cambodia, Ueno Atsushi, and Cambodia's defense minister, Thi Seha, both attended the event.
The Japanese government established the Official Security Assistance, or OSA, framework in 2023.
Its aim was to deepen security cooperation with like-minded countries by offering defense equipment and other materials.
This will be the first provision to Cambodia under the OSA program.
Tokyo plans to give Phnom Penh communication devices and patrol boats worth 500 million yen, or about $3 million.
The Japanese government has supplied the Philippines with coastal surveillance radar systems through the OSA framework.
It agreed to furnish Thailand with disaster response and rescue equipment in March.

I believe security cooperation between Japan and Cambodia has entered a new stage because of the decision to provide equipment through the OSL program.

War in Ukraine: Russia Ramps Up Attacks on Kyiv
Ukrainian officials report a Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv has left one person dead and 15 others injured.
They say the assault was carried out overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sibia issued a social media post about the incident.
He said Russia unleashed the largest number of ballistic missiles since the start of the war.
Moscow has been ramping up offensives against the Ukrainian capital for several months.
An attack in mid-June caused a fire at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery.
The structure is designated as a World Heritage Site.
Some parts of the facility are still covered with sheets.
Members of an NHK crew were allowed to enter the buildings one month after the assault.
They reported there was a burning smell in the air.
Walls and floors at the religious site were drenched with water during the firefighting operation. Staff members were using fans to dry them.
They were also seen wiping the floors with towels and vacuuming.
Officials estimate it will take more than two years to complete the restoration work.

Japanese Astronaut Yui Looks Back on ISS Mission
Japanese astronaut Yui Kimiya has reflected on his stay at the International Space Station.
He said he was so comfortable, he didn't want to return to Earth.
Yui was speaking at an event on Sunday in Nagano Prefecture, where he was born.
The astronaut spent more than five months on the ISS during his second stay from last August to January.
He showed videos and talked about completing important missions, such as capturing Japan's new cargo transfer spacecraft with a robotic arm.
