One day after a deadly volcanic eruption in Japan, search efforts for people who may still be stuck at a ski resort have been called off for the day.
Volcanic tremors have once again been detected at Mount Kusatsu-Shirane.
The search at the resort north of Tokyo was suspended on Wednesday.
Police and firefighters had been combing through an area where volcanic rocks rained down from Tuesday's eruption.
Officials say the operation will resume on Thursday if the situation stabilizes.
The Meteorological Agency is keeping the alert level at 3 on a scale of 5 saying more eruptions may occur.
On Tuesday, one person died after being struck by volcanic debris and 11 others were injured.
Dozens of people stuck near the summit had to be rescued by helicopters and snowmobiles.
Meanwhile, the agency is taking heat for not immediately issuing a notice after the eruption.
Officials say their monitoring cameras were not facing the direction of the blast and it took time to confirm what happened.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he hopes to attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month, if the circumstances permit.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he referred to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and said he wants to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Games that are also being held in Asia. He said he also wants to encourage the participating athletes. The opening ceremony will take place on February 9th.
Abe said he hopes to hold a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in during the same trip. He added he wants to reaffirm with President Moon the need to work closely with the United States to counter the threat from North Korea, and to maintain the maximum level of pressure on Pyongyang.
Abe said he would also firmly convey Japan's stance regarding its agreement with South Korea on the issue of those referred to as comfort women.
The agreement was reached in late 2015 under Moon's predecessor, Park Geun-hye. It confirmed a final and irreversible resolution of the comfort women issue.
Moon suggested earlier this month that the agreement was flawed and that Japan needed to do more to resolve the issue completely, including a wholehearted apology to the victims. But he said South Korea would not seek to renegotiate the deal. Abe responded that he finds it unacceptable for South Korea to demand further measures from Japan.
South Korea's presidential office has welcomed news of Abe's intended visit.

North Korea's ambassador to the Conference on Disarmament has denounced the United States for "throwing a wet blanket over" the warming relations between North and South Korea.
Han Tae Song told a meeting of the conference in Geneva on Tuesday that the situation on the Korean Peninsula has changed drastically thanks to his country's efforts.
Han said momentum for reconciliation and cooperation has been born between the 2 Koreas.
He said the hostile US policy toward North Korea runs counter to the easing tensions.
The ambassador requested that the US permanently halt its joint military exercises with South Korea if it wants the inter-Korean relations to improve.
Washington and Seoul have agreed to suspend the drills ahead of the start of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea next month.
US Ambassador Robert Wood said attempts to disrupt international coordination will fail, adding that international pressure will continue unless Pyongyang starts taking steps toward giving up its nuclear program.
Japanese Ambassador Nobushige Takamizawa called on the international community to keep putting maximum pressure to bring about a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
But Han said his country now possesses a "powerful and reliable war deterrent, which no force and nothing can reverse."

A US military helicopter has returned to its home base following an emergency landing on a small island in Okinawa.
The AH-1 attack helicopter is based at the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in the southern Japanese prefecture.
It landed on a helipad in the village of Tonaki on Tuesday night. It took off from there and stopped over at the US Kadena Air Base in Okinawa on Wednesday.
This is the third emergency landing by a US helicopter in the prefecture this month. Also, in December, a large military copter's window fell onto an elementary school playground.
Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga told reporters that the US military seems to be losing control, and is unable to manage and supervise itself. He added there has been no sign of improvement despite repeated protests.
Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said the US called the landing precautionary, but that there have been just too many forced landings.
He added that Japan will ask the US if it is inspecting its aircraft thoroughly enough.

Government officials say Japan's trade balance last year was in black for the second consecutive year, mainly due to robust exports of chip-making machines and cars.
Officials at Finance Ministry say last year's trade surplus was nearly 3 trillion yen, or about 27 billion dollars.
Exports were up nearly 12% in yen terms from 2016.
The figure was supported by robust exports of chip-making machines to Asian countries and cars to the United States. Imports were also up by 14%, due to higher oil and coal prices.
The politically-sensitive trade surplus with the United States rose more than 3% to about 64 billion dollars. US President Trump is demanding that Japan have more balanced trade with his country.
For December, the trade balance was also in the black and for the 7th month in a row, logging a surplus of about 3.3 billion dollars.

Struggling LCD maker Japan Display is turning to new technologies in a bid to overcome its financial problems. Part of the strategy calls for relying less on its loss-making smartphone business.
The company has unveiled a fingerprint scanner made of transparent, flexible glass only one-millimeter thick.
Officials says it can be used to control door locks, identify credit-card users and for a host of other applications. Mass production is planned for the next fiscal year that starts in April.
Another item is a high-resolution LCD for virtual reality goggles. Company officials say it helps prevent motion sickness.
Japan Display was formed in 2012 by a merger of the LCD units of Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony. It's been receiving support from a government-backed fund.

An NHK survey has found that nearly half of the firms polled say they are tightening quality control.
The survey was conducted on 100 major firms between last month and the middle of this month following a series of revelations of quality control-related scandals among manufacturers.
Asked if they had taken measures for quality control of their products and services, 29 firms responded that they had. 13 firms said they were going to take measures.
On specific measures to prevent misconduct, 36 firms gave mechanization and automation of quality inspections as their replies.
A specialist on corporate quality control says falsifications and misconduct would decrease if inspections are mechanized or automated.
He added that it is also important for corporate executives to educate employees and build a system in which employees can openly report misconduct instead of concealing it, if it occurs.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has held its first tourism promotion event in Moscow.
Representatives of about 65 firms, including Japanese and Russian tour operators and Japanese hotels, came together at a hotel in the Russian capital.
The head of Tokyo's Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs, Yuji Fujita, said the city has been making dramatic changes in preparation for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
Officials showed off the city's sights and promoted the country's culinary delights, traditional culture and natural treasures.
About 77 thousand Russian tourists visited Japan last year. That's up 41 percent from 2016. Officials say the increase was helped by an easing of visa requirements.
Even more Russian visitors are expected in 2018, which is designated as a year of Japan-Russia exchange.
An official of a tour operator in Moscow said he hopes the opening of a branch in the Far East region will lead to the creation of more Tokyo tours.
