Japan's financial watchdog has launched a probe into all crypto-currency exchanges in the country following a major cyberheist.
Tokyo-based exchange company Coincheck lost more than 500 million dollars' worth of digital money last Friday in a high-profile hacking incident.
As a result of the incident, the Financial Services Agency is examining security measures in all virtual currency exchanges across Japan.
The agency plans to find out how exchanges keep customers' assets, with on-site inspections if necessary. It will also check whether their systems for detecting unauthorized access are functioning properly.
The watchdog also issued a business improvement order to Coincheck on Monday. Officials told the company to investigate the cause of the security breach, reimburse customers for lost funds and implement measures to prevent a recurrence.
Meanwhile, another major exchange company in Japan unveiled plans to boost security measures following the heist.
BITPoint Japan says it will increase the number of staff monitoring its virtual currency trading. Experts will also simulate attacks, in order to test the strength of its system.

Volcanic tremors have occurred on Mount Zao, which straddles Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures in northeastern Japan. Weather officials are advising people to be careful of changes in volcanic activity.
Officials of the Meteorological Agency say a volcanic tremor was observed at around 7 PM on Sunday and another shortly before 1 AM on Tuesday. They say the tremors are thought to be indications of movement of heated underground water and volcanic gas.
A volcanic tremor was last observed on Mount Zao last year on April 3rd.
The agency officials say slight crustal movements were also continuing near the mountain's peak at around 4 AM Tuesday.
They say a monitoring point located about 5 kilometers southwest of Okama Crater lake detected swelling on the mountain's southern slope.
Discharges of volcanic gases continue to be observed at nearby Umanose Caldera.
The agency is keeping the volcanic alert level at 1 on an ascending scale up to 5, indicating potential for increased activity.
On Mount Kusatsu-Shirane in Gunma Prefecture north of Tokyo, heightened volcanic activity continued on Tuesday, one week after a fatal eruption.
The eruption from craters near Kagamiike pond beside Motoshirane peak on January 23rd killed 1 person. Eleven other people were injured by volcanic rocks.
On Tuesday, many people came to place flowers at an altar set up beside the ropeway station at the foot of the mountain.
At 10 AM, around the time of the eruption, they offered a silent prayer for Ground Self-Defense Force Sergeant Major Takayuki Izawa, who died in the eruption while on a training exercise.
The Meteorological Agency says the number of volcanic earthquakes on Mount Kusatsu-Shirane has been declining, but still 3 quakes occurred on Tuesday as of 9 AM.
The agency is maintaining an alert level of 3 for Kusatsu-Shirane. It is advising people not to approach the volcano and to beware of falling volcanic rocks within about 2 kilometers of the craters.

Trade officials of the United States, Canada, and Mexico have failed to narrow their differences on auto tariffs in their sixth round of negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Trade ministers of the 3 countries held a joint conference on Monday, after week-long negotiations in Montreal, Canada.
US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer called the latest round "a step forward." But he also expressed frustration, saying the talks are "progressing very slowly."
Lighthizer said 3-party negotiations are more difficult than 2-party ones as issues often become more complicated.
The 3 nations are still divided over conditions for auto tariff exemptions. The US wants to change the so-called rules of origin, so that vehicles have at least 50 percent US-made content to qualify for tariff breaks.
The next round of talks will likely be held in late February in Mexico, with an aim of reaching an agreement by the end of March.
But it's unclear whether there will be a breakthrough, given Mexico's presidential election in July, and the US midterm congressional elections in November.

Hong Kong media are speculating that Chinese President Xi Jinping's trusted ally, Wang Qishan, may win the post of vice president. Wang retired from the Communist Party leadership last year.
Wang was known for spearheading Xi's anti-corruption drive. He left the Politburo Standing Committee last year after reaching the customary retirement age of 68. The decision that he should leave was made in October at the Communist Party Congress where Xi cemented his grip on power.
But, Chinese media reported on Monday that Wang has booked a spot in the country's parliament that convenes in March, as a delegate from Hunan Province.
It is rare for a retired member of the party's top leadership to be named a delegate to the National People's Congress.
This means Wang is not fully retiring.
China watchers say that if Wang is appointed vice president, he will remain influential as an ally and deputy to President Xi.

A Chinese military vessel and aircraft passed through the Tsushima Strait off western Japan on Monday.
Japan's Defense Ministry says a Chinese navy frigate sailed north from the East China Sea through the strait to reach the Sea of Japan on Monday.
It then turned around and headed back to the East China Sea.
Around the same time, a Chinese Y9 surveillance plane flew near the area in the Sea of Japan and returned to the East China Sea.
Japan's Air Self-Defense Force scrambled jets to monitor the situation.
The Defense Ministry said the Chinese vessel and aircraft did not enter Japanese territorial waters or airspace.
The ministry is analyzing movements by the Chinese military in the Sea of Japan and other areas.
Earlier this month, a Chinese navy submarine traveled submerged in the contiguous zone just outside Japanese territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.
Last month, China for the first time flew 5 warplanes in formation over the Tsushima Strait.

A Cambodian opposition politician is calling on Japan to end assistance of her country's general election scheduled for July. She says it will not be a fair election.
NHK interviewed deputy spokesperson of the Cambodian National Rescue Party Kem Monovithya in the United States. She criticized Prime Minister Hun Sen for dissolving her party and arresting its leader for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government. Party leader Kem Sokha is her father.
She said while the US and the European Union suspended assistance for the national election committee, Japan has yet to do anything.
She said support from a free and democratic nation like Japan could justify an illegitimate election.
She added the government could be prompted to rethink its policy if Japan halts its aid.
Hun Sen has been in power for over 30 years.
Japanese officials have conveyed to the Cambodian government concern about the recent developments.
But they say they would rather continue to encourage dialogue between ruling and opposition parties than take harsh measures against the government.
They have told Cambodian officials it's important the election reflect the people's will.

Tokyo's Nikkei Average has recorded the sharpest drop this year, following a plunge overnight in New York.
Stocks were sold across the board on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
The Nikkei closed at 23,291, down 337 points from the previous day. The index fell for the 5th straight trading day.
The broader TOPIX index was down 22 points to 1,858.
Market sources say New York stocks plummeted on worries about rising US long-term rates that would tighten corporate financing. They say this triggered the big drop in Asia's main markets, including Tokyo. They add that market players are feeling more pessimistic about corporate earnings.

Executives at Toyota Motor have released the company's annual global unit sales for 2017. It shows that Toyota and its group have fallen to 3rd place, trailing behind Volkswagen at number 1, and the Renault group at number 2.
Company officials say the Toyota group including Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors sold over 10.3 million vehicles last year. That's a 2.1 percent increase from 2016.
Germany's Volkswagen and its group topped the list for the second-straight year. It sold 10.7 million units for a gain of over 4 percent from 2016.
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group sold 10.6 million vehicles. All three automakers sold a record number of vehicles in 2017.
Analysts say Toyota's position sank as it failed to boost sales in China compared to its rivals. The carmaker lost the top slot in 2016 for the first time in 5 years.
