Health experts are studying new cases of the coronavirus across Japan. They say the total number of infections in the country has climbed to 337.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government held a news conference at 6 PM Japan time and announced that 8 more people had been confirmed infected with the virus in Tokyo.
Seven of them were found when the authorities were investigating the driver of a private taxi who was confirmed infected on Thursday.
Meanwhile, in Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, authorities said on Saturday a second doctor, his wife and an inpatient at a hospital there had all tested positive.
A doctor and another inpatient at the hospital were previously found to have the virus, making the surgeon the fifth case in Wakayama.
Officials are now testing all of the doctors and staff at the hospital, as well as anyone who has had contact with the infected patients.
In response to the spread of the virus, local governments in the area are cancelling events with large gatherings.

A group of Japanese people who evacuated the virus-stricken Chinese city of Wuhan on the third government-chartered flight, except for one, have gone home after a quarantine period.
Japan's health ministry says when they returned to Japan on January 31st, all 145 people tested negative for the new coronavirus and exhibited no symptoms, such as fever,.
The people were then quarantined at a government facility in Wako City, Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo.
Among the evacuees, one woman in her 60s was confirmed to be infected with the virus in a second check she received after 12-and-a-half days passed. That's the likely maximum incubation period.
The 144 others who tested negative began to go home on Friday evening. The government says that all of them had left the facility by Saturday noon.
Those who returned to Japan on the first and second evacuation flights and underwent quarantine in designated accommodations have already returned home after testing negative.
Meanwhile, 197 people who arrived in Japan on a fourth evacuation flight are now in quarantine. They will undergo the same examination.

A newspaper report says the US government plans to evacuate American passengers aboard a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo.
The Wall Street Journal said on Friday the State Department will send two airplanes to remove about 380 Americans from the virus-stricken Diamond Princess.
The article cited an official from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who briefed evacuees from China quarantined at a military base in California.
The official reportedly said people who show no symptoms, such as fever and coughing, will be offered seats on the planes. They will arrive in the US as early as Sunday.
Many Americans are paying attention to the fate of the ship, which is carrying more than 400 American passengers and crew. They are also observing Japan's response to the viral outbreak.

The number of Chinese travelers to Japan has sharply decreased amid the spread of the new coronavirus.
A UN agency estimates the plunge could see Japan's tourism industry posting a loss of nearly 1.3 billion dollars during the first three months of this year.
The International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, published its forecasts on possible economic impacts from COVID-19 travel bans.
It says some 70 airlines have cancelled all international flights to or from mainland China, and that 50 other airlines have curtailed related air operations.
The agency added that this has resulted in an 80 percent reduction in foreign airline capacity for travelers flying directly to or from China.
The agency said impacts from the new virus are expected to be greater than those caused by the 2003 epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS.
It said the COVID-19 outbreak has led to a sharp fall in the number of Chinese tourists around the world, and that Japan could lose 1.29 billion dollars in tourism revenue in the January-March period.

Japan's health ministry has decided to begin clinical trials on patients infected by the new coronavirus with a drug used to treat HIV.
Thailand and other countries have reported that the symptoms of coronavirus patients improved after they were administered antiviral drugs that are used to prevent the onset of AIDS.
The health ministry said it has decided to confirm the effectiveness and safety of the drug manufactured by a US pharmaceutical firm.
The trial will be conducted by a group at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Tokyo.
When the drug was given to an infected patient there last month, symptoms improved, but it is uncertain whether the drug eased the patient's condition.
Researchers want to administer the drug to other patients, collect more data and find effective ways to use the medicine.
Japan's government is planning to spend about 3.2 million dollars on the clinical trial. It also aims to establish methods for prevention and treatment with quick diagnostic kits.

Chinese authorities have extended quarantine regulations in Beijing as confirmed coronavirus infections on the mainland exceed 66,000. The death toll for mainland China now stands at 1,523, including 143 confirmed to have died on Friday.
Many of the fatalities are in Hubei Province, where the virus is believed to have originated. The number of health workers with coronavirus is also on the rise.
Meanwhile, Hubei Province's newly appointed health chief held his first news conference in the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began.
Hubei Province health chief Wang Hesheng said "Wuhan is still the main battleground for preventing the spread of infection. We will take full measures to prevent the emergence of a second Wuhan."
On Friday in Beijing, a 14-day period of self-quarantine was imposed on people returning from holidays. A newspaper in the capital says they are advised to stay at home or elsewhere. Those who refuse could reportedly be punished by law.
In another move, the World Health Organization says it's sending a team to China this weekend to look into how the infection has spread.
Twelve health experts from around the world will study symptoms and preventive measures with Chinese officials.

A British think-tank says global defense spending in 2019 increased by 4 percent from the previous year -- the largest growth in the past decade.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies on Friday published its annual "Military Balance" report. It analyzes nations' military power and regional situations.
The report says the defense spending of both the United States and China in 2019 rose by 6.6 percent from the previous year -- surpassing the global average.
The report notes that US defense spending rose by 53.4 billion dollars. The increase was almost as big as the entire defense budget of Britain.
But it says growth in China's defense spending is slowing, reflecting the country's economic situation.
The report notes that the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF, between the US and Russia expired last year. It also says it's unclear if the New START treaty will be renewed after it expires next year.
The report says the international order based on rules established after World War Two is facing a severe situation.
