Preliminary tests returned a positive result for the coronavirus on January 28, but the result had not been confirmed at the time of the man's death.

The hospital that treated him said his cause of death was "viral pneumonia," but officials were not sure if it had been caused by the new coronavirus.

The vice governor of the coronavirus-hit Chinese province of Hubei says the province is suffering from a shortage of more than 2,000 medial workers.

Yang Yunyan said at a news conference on Thursday that personnel in respiratory medicine and workers who can tend to severely ill patients are in short supply.

Yang said the shortage remains severe despite the fact that over 10,000 medical staffers from across the country have come to the province to help.

Two hospitals have been quickly built in the city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, to accommodate the surging number of patients. A gymnasium and other facilities have been converted into makeshift hospitals.

But the shortage of medial workers has been fueling criticism.

NHK spoke by phone to a 30-year-old woman whose 57-year-old father is in an isolation unit at a temporary hospital.

She said the facility is very dangerous for patients as it seems to lack medical personnel. She expressed the hope that the patients will survive.

China's National Health Commission says 563 people have died so far, with the number of confirmed cases of infection standing at 28,018.

The Chinese doctor who was reprimanded by police for trying to sound the alarm in the early days of the coronavirus outbreak died on Friday.

Li Wenliang was a 34-year-old ophthalmologist. He worked at a hospital in Wuhan.

Chinese media reports say that Li sent a warning to an online chat group on December 30. He told the group about a new viral infection that he believed was similar to SARS, which broke out in 2003.

He was summoned by local police a few days later. The authorities reprimanded him for spreading false information and severely disrupting the social order.

He continued working at the hospital, but was hospitalized in mid-January after developing a fever and a cough. It was later confirmed that he was infected with the new coronavirus.

Li voiced more concerns on the Weibo social media platform. He questioned why officials were denying the existence of human-to-human transmissions. He also wondered why the authorities were continuing to deny that the disease was spreading inside hospitals.

The news of Li's death triggered an online outpouring of praise and mourning for the doctor.

Many people also criticized the authorities. Some demanded that the police apologize. Others said it's too late for the authorities to express regrets about their poor handling of the outbreak.

Chinese authorities have offered their condolences over the death of a doctor in Wuhan who went online to warn people of the coronavirus outbreak.

Li Wenliang died on Friday after being infected with the virus. He was reprimanded by police for trying to sound the alarm before the government announced the outbreak.

His death triggered public criticism of the government's initial response to the outbreak and information disclosure.

At a news conference, China's health officials expressed their condolences.

Authorities announced they will dispatch a team to Wuhan to investigate Li's case.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in mainland China has topped 31,000. The death toll has reached 636.

The Chinese government has placed emphasis on containing the spread of the virus in Hubei Province, the epicenter of the outbreak.

It has built hospitals and dispatched medical staff from across the country to the province.

But authorities have not been able to keep up with the rapid increase in the number of patients.

Authorities have confirmed that three more people who traveled on a cruise ship now quarantined in Yokohama Port, south of Tokyo, have the new coronavirus.

Japan's health ministry has tested 279 out of the 3,700 passengers and crew on board the Diamond Princess. Officials targeted anyone with symptoms such as fever and coughing, as well as passengers who had close contact with such people.

Authorities say the three new people with infections are now in hospital.

The Diamond Princess set sail from Yokohama on January 20. It made a stop in Hong Kong, where an 80-year-old passenger from the territory disembarked and subsequently tested positive.

The number of cases from the cruise ship is now at 64, excluding the first patient in Hong Kong. The health ministry says one person with a pre-existing medical condition is seriously ill.

The ministry has quarantined the Diamond Princess for 14 days, starting Wednesday. It has requested that people on board remain in their rooms.

The number of confirmed cases in Japan is now 89, including the 64 from the cruise ship.

The operator of the cruise ship Westerdam is searching for a port to call at after being rejected by destinations including Japan amid fears of the spreading coronavirus.

The US-based Holland America Line said in a statement on Friday that the ship is "currently sailing on a southwesterly course off the coast of Taiwan." The firm says it is positioning the ship "for access to potential port locations."

The Westerdam departed Hong Kong on February 1 with more than 2,200 passengers and crew onboard.

Taiwan denied it permission to call, citing a suspicion of coronavirus infection among the passengers. Japanese authorities followed suit, preventing it from entering a port in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa.

Holland America Line said in the statement that "The ship is not in quarantine" and there is "no reason to believe there are any cases of coronavirus on board."

It added the ship has sufficient fuel and food, and passengers are provided with free internet and phone access.

The United States is offering up to 100 million dollars in assistance to help China and other countries affected by the new coronavirus, in addition to medical supplies it airlifted to China this week.

US President Donald Trump last month set up a coronavirus task force overseen by Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.

At a news conference held by the team on Friday, Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun revealed the US government flew nearly 18 tons of medical supplies to China. The freight included masks, gowns and other materials. Biegun said the supplies were donations from the US private sector.

He said the US government is also "prepared to spend up to 100 million dollars in existing funds to assist China and other impacted countries."

Washington has offered to send health workers and medical experts to China, but Beijing has yet to accept.

Japan's top steel manufacturer, Nippon Steel, has announced a drastic cut in domestic production.

The company announced that it will shut down its Kure Works in Hiroshima Prefecture, western Japan.

Currently, the site has about 3,300 workers. Nippon Steel says it will also idle one furnace at its Wakayama plant.

The company says the plan will reduce its output capacity by 5 million tons a year and boost revenue by about 1-billion dollars.

Executive Vice President Akio Migita says the company projects that the domestic market will shrink and global competition will accelerate.

He says, looking forward, Nippon Steel came up with the plan after an assessment that current output capacity is too high.

The steel maker also cut its revenue and net-profit forecasts for full year ending March. It expects a net loss of 440 billion yen or about 4-billion dollars, compared with the previous forecast of 40 billion yen in net profit.

Democratic candidates for US presidential nominee have held a heated debate in New Hampshire ahead of the eastern state's primary election.

ABC News hosted the eighth televised presidential debate on Friday.

The top finishers from Monday's Iowa caucus, Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders, criticized each other.

Buttigieg, the former South Bend mayor who has fought a tight race with Sanders, attacked his opponent for deepening social divisions with what he called "a politics that says if you don't vote all the way to the edge, it doesn't count."

Sanders responded, "Needless to say, I've never said that."

Former Vice President Joe Biden who finished fourth in Iowa, despite being favorite in national polls, sharply criticized Sanders on his plan for universal, government-run health insurance.

Biden questioned how his rival's Medicare plan would be funded.

The focus is increasingly on the New Hampshire primary as the nomination contest in Iowa ended in confusion without a clear winner.

More than 1,000 soccer fans welcomed veteran Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda at Rio de Janeiro airport on Friday as he prepares to join Brazilian club Botafogo.

Honda revealed at the end of January that he had signed a contract with the club, which is in the country's top division.

Fans waited at the airport for about four hours, some with Japanese flags and banners saying "Welcome Honda".

One person said Honda can save the team, which finished 15th out of the 20 last year.

The 33-year-old has represented Japan at three consecutive World Cup finals. He has played for clubs including AC Milan and CSKA Moscow.

Last November, Honda signed for Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands, but left the club just over a month later following the resignation of the club's head coach.

Botafogo has struggled in recent years, often finishing near the bottom of the league.
