Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko says the Japanese capital is expected to confirm more than 280 new cases of the coronavirus on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at the metropolitan government building, Koike said officials have told her that the figure is likely to top 280, although the final tally is still uncertain.
This would be a new daily record for Tokyo. The highest figure so far has been the 243 cases confirmed on July 10.
Koike said she was told that the number of tests carried out to check for infections also reached a record high, surpassing 4,000.

Tokyo has been put on the highest level of alert for the coronavirus after a string of triple-digit new daily cases. Officials are urging people to take precautionary measures.
Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko said, "We decided that we need to raise the alert level to warn residents that infection is spreading."
More than 200 cases were reported for four days in a row through Sunday.
Since then, numbers have dipped slightly but are still topping 100, with 165 cases reported on Wednesday.
Experts are especially concerned about the increasing number of untraceable cases.
The weekly average has nearly doubled recently.
Disease Control and Prevention Center Director Ohmagari Norio said, "In four weeks, the number of untraceable cases could be 16 times as many as now. That means about 1,200 people. If it continues to double, eight weeks from now, the figure will increase by 256-fold."
The governor is calling on residents to refrain from non-essential travel to other prefectures.
She is also asking people not to visit restaurants and night clubs not taking sufficient anti-virus measures.
The number of infections continues to rise in other parts of Japan.
Sixty-one cases were confirmed in the western prefecture of Osaka on Wednesday.
That's the highest since a nationwide state of emergency was lifted in May.
Across Japan, more than 22,000 people have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Nearly 1,000 people have died.
Officials are also closely watching developments in the southern prefecture of Okinawa, home to many US military bases. More than 130 personnel have been found to be infected there.
Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny met Defense Minister Kono Taro in Tokyo. He asked the minister to push the US military to swiftly provide detailed information on the infected people.
Tamaki said, "I hope he will tell the US side what he has to say as Japan's defense minister, whose duty is to protect the people of this country. I also want him to consider the position of the local governments that host the US bases."

The Japanese government plans to seek opinions from experts on a package of measures to stimulate consumption for an economic recovery from the coronavirus outbreak.
The government plans to launch its "Go To" campaign on Wednesday next week. It covers tourism, restaurant and other industries hit by the outbreak.
But opposition parties and some local governments are calling for the program to be canceled or postponed.
Some within the ruling camp are also expressing concern that the campaign could help spread the coronavirus.
The government on Thursday will hold a meeting of its subcommittee on coronavirus measures, which includes infectious disease experts and prefectural governors.
Government officials plan to hear views from the participants on the infection situation in the country and explain details of the campaign.
On Wednesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga Yoshihide pointed out that the tourism and restaurant industries hope for a recovery in social and economic activities. He said that on Friday, Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Akaba Kazuyoshi will explain details of anti-infection and other measures on the premise of proceeding with the campaign.
Some members of the ruling camp are calling for carrying out the campaign in limited regions.
The government plans to study measures to prevent infection and ways to carry out the campaign, taking experts' opinions into consideration.

The US Federal Reserve says a wave of coronavirus infections has slammed the brakes on the country's nascent economic recovery.
The Fed released its latest Beige Book assessment on Wednesday. The report says economic activity has ticked up throughout the country, led mainly by a rebound in vehicle sales, but remains well below pre-pandemic levels.
It adds this recovery is being dampened by a wave of infections in Midwestern and western states, which is forcing many businesses to cut wages, or even close.
Some experts say the US has weathered the worst of the pandemic's economic damage but that the pace of recovery will be much slower than expected.

Oil-producing countries have agreed to ease oil production cuts on the expectation that demand will rebound as economic activities resume in much of the world.
Saudi Arabia and other members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, along with producers including Russia, have been slashing supply by 9.7 million barrels a day, or ten percent of the world's total output, since May to maintain crude oil prices around the globe.
They launched the cuts in the wake of a sharp drop in oil demand amid the coronavirus pandemic, and will continue the measures until the end of July.
The OPEC members and other producing nations on Wednesday held a video conference and agreed to start curtailing output reductions by about 2 million barrels a day in August.
They expect the increased portion of production will be consumed as global demand shows signs of recovery following a reigniting of world business activities.
In April, crude oil's benchmark WTI futures index briefly fell below zero in New York. But as the figure has recovered to 40 dollars a barrel, the average price of regular gasoline in Japan has risen for 9 weeks in a row through this week.
But analysts warn as a resurgence of coronavirus infections has prompted authorities in parts of the world to impose lockdowns, it is still unclear whether the increasing trend of oil prices will continue.

China's economy managed to grow in the last quarter, although at a slower pace than before the coronavirus pandemic.
The GDP data for April to June shows the country was still struggling to recover.
China's National Bureau of Statistics says growth came in at 3.2 percent, compared to the same period last year.
Beijing has been rolling out policies to prop up the economy, which was hit hard by the pandemic.

Twitter says hackers gained access to its internal systems to hijack some of the social media platform's most widely followed accounts on Wednesday.
The firm said the hackers successfully targeted some of its employees with access to such systems to take control of and tweet on the high-profile accounts.
Twitter called the hacking a "coordinated social engineering attack" by people who steal passwords and other personal information by exploiting security lapses.
US media say the hijacked accounts include those of former vice president Joe Biden, former president Barack Obama, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, as well as the official corporate accounts of Apple and Uber.
Fake tweets posted on the accounts reportedly offered to double the money sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address.
Twitter temporarily took the extraordinary step of preventing posting of any messages on at least some of the affected accounts.
The firm later said it was still investigating the incident but that access to the accounts had been restored, allowing their users to tweet again.
The incident is expected to raise serious concerns about the global platform's security and the credibility of information posted on its accounts.
Key words : United States support claim

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States is willing to support countries that acknowledge China makes unlawful sovereignty claims.
Pompeo told reporters on Wednesday, "We will support countries all across the world who recognize that China has violated their legal territorial claims as well, or maritime claims as well."
This comment indicated this stance is not limited to the South China Sea. Pompeo said in a statement issued on Monday that China's vast maritime claims in the South China Sea are "completely unlawful."
Meanwhile, a State Department spokesperson told NHK, "The United States recognizes Japan's administrative control of the Senkaku Islands and that Article 5 of our Security Treaty covers territory under Japan's administrative control." The article obliges the US to defend those territories.
Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
Pompeo also said on Wednesday that Chinese tech firms, including Huawei, are involved in human rights violations in China and announced restrictions on entering the US on certain employees of those firms.

A European Union court has annulled the European Commission's decision that US IT giant Apple pay a huge amount of back taxes to Irish authorities.
The EU's General Court, which serves as the trial court, delivered the ruling on Wednesday, saying the commission did not provide enough evidence showing Apple was given an illegal advantage.
In 2016, the commission demanded the Irish government impose 13 billion euros, or about 15 billion dollars, in back taxes on Apple, claiming the government's tax benefits for the firm constituted illegal subsidies.
Dublin had Apple pay 14.3 billion euros, or about 16.3 billion dollars, including interest, saying it cooperated in collecting tax as an EU member. But the government, disputing the commission's decision, brought the case to the court.
The EU has been stepping up its tax measures, saying Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon from the US, among other firms, do not pay enough taxes corresponding to their huge profits by having bases in countries with low corporate tax rates.
But the ruling may have an impact on such efforts.

The New York Times says it will relocate its Hong Kong-based digital news operation to the South Korean capital of Seoul, citing concern over the national security law China enacted in Hong Kong at the end of last month.
The US newspaper revealed the plan in its online article on Tuesday.
It quoted the company's editors and executives as saying China's new law "has created a lot of uncertainty about what the new rules will mean to our operation and our journalism."
The paper added, "We feel it is prudent to make contingency plans and begin to diversify our editing staff around the region."
The New York Times said it also considered Tokyo, Bangkok, and Singapore as a suitable location for its digital news team outside Hong Kong.
But it said it chose Seoul because of its "friendliness to foreign business, independent press, and its central role in several major Asian news stories."
The new law for Hong Kong applies to both local and foreign media. It enables Chinese authorities to require media outlets to delete information or submit materials if the authorities judge a report as harming the country's security.
