The Japanese embassy in Myanmar has confirmed that Japanese journalist Kitazumi Yuki is being held in Insein prison in Yangon. Witnesses said security forces took him from his home on Sunday night.

Witnesses said Kitazumi was taken from his apartment at around 7:45 p.m. and had his belongings confiscated. They said soldiers and police also joined the raid and searched every room in the apartment.
Kitazumi's current condition is unknown.

This is not the first time Kitazumi has been detained in the country, which is in the midst of violent turmoil following the military coup. Back in February, Kitazumi was briefly taken into custody by police while covering pro-democracy protests but was released on the same day.

He has been posting on social media articles and photos about the situation in Myanmar, and continued doing so following his first detainment.

Various protests have been staged against the military junta as security forces continue to target demonstrators. A local human rights group says that as of Sunday, security forces have killed at least 737 people.

Recently, pro-democracy politicians including ousted members of parliament announced the formation of a National Unity Government. This includes Aung San Suu Kyi, leaders of anti-coup protests and ethnic minorities.

The NUG has called for international recognition as the legitimate authority. However, the military designated it as an illegal organization and may intensify their armed crackdown.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide has indicated Japan is likely to receive enough doses of coronavirus vaccines from US pharmaceutical company Pfizer by September.

Suga told reporters on Monday that he requested enough doses to vaccinate eligible people in Japan by September.

He said Bourla indicated that the company will quickly discuss the request.

Suga was also asked by reporters about the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in Osaka Prefecture, where coronavirus infections continue to spread.

The prime minister said the situation is being handled with an acute sense of crisis. He said the national and Osaka prefectural governments are doing their utmost to secure hospital beds.

South Korea has told the United States about its serious concern over Japan's decision to release treated water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean. But the US president's Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, says Japan's process is already very transparent.

The Japanese government plans to treat the wastewater to remove most of the radioactive materials, and dilute it so the concentration of the remaining tritium is well below World Health Organization standards before discharging it.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry says Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong invited Kerry to dinner in Seoul on Saturday, and conveyed the government and the people's serious concerns about Japan's decision.

The ministry says Chung asked the US to cooperate so that Japan will disclose information more clearly and speedily.

Kerry told reporters in Seoul on Sunday that the United States is confident that the government of Japan is in very full consultations with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He said Japan has been "very transparent about the decision and the process," and indicated it would not be appropriate for the United States to intervene in an ongoing process.

The IAEA is also showing support for Japan's decision.

The Japanese government says it will give an in-depth explanation to seek the understanding of the international community.

A court in Hong Kong has sentenced media tycoon Jimmy Lai to 14 months in prison for taking part in unauthorized pro-democracy protests two years ago.

The founder of the Apple Daily newspaper, which is known to be critical of Beijing, was among 10 people sentenced on Friday for organizing two rallies in August 2019.

This is the first time Lai has been sentenced to prison. He is also accused of breaching the territory's national security law in connection with protest activities.

Aside from Lai, former lawmaker and pro-democracy activist Lee Cheuk-yan and three others were given prison terms ranging from eight to 18 months.

Ahead of the court session, Lee expressed pride in fighting for democracy with the people of Hong Kong. He said, "We will walk together even in darkness, we will walk with hope in our hearts."

The remaining five defendants received suspended sentences due to factors such as old age. They include 82-year-old former lawmaker Martin Lee, known as Hong Kong's "father of democracy."

Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics has resumed production at a plant damaged by fire. The restart could help ease a global semiconductor shortage, but the facility's output is expected to take months to return to normal.

The company restarted production at the plant north of Tokyo on Saturday. A fire there about a month earlier caused a partial halt in the output of semiconductors for automobiles and more.

Renesas has 30 percent of the global share for microcontrollers, a key component for vehicle movements.

Analysts are focused on how quickly Renesas can restore supply to levels from before the fire.

President and CEO Shibata Hidetoshi is due to hold an online news conference on Monday afternoon to provide a more detailed outlook.

Japanese astronaut Hoshide Akihiko has spoken of his excitement about his upcoming missions at the International Space Station.

Hoshide and three other astronauts from the United States and France are scheduled to leave for the ISS on Thursday. It will be the second operational flight of the spacecraft Crew Dragon developed by a private-sector US firm. Hoshide will become the second Japanese to serve as an ISS commander.

The crew members spoke to reporters online on Saturday.

Hoshide said he is looking forward to his missions at space station as there will be a variety of activities and many spacecraft coming and going.

Asked whether he is allowed to bring any Japanese food, he responded there will be no sushi, but he wants to share some other food with his crew mates.

Hoshide also said every single operation leads to the Artemis program, a planned moon landing, so he hopes to accomplish his missions to pave the way.

Hoshide is set to conduct various scientific experiments and release a small satellite into space during a six-month stay aboard the ISS.
