Friday marks the 32nd anniversary of China's deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protesters at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Police officers stationed around the square are questioning visitors and checking their bags on Friday morning.
The incident on June 4, 1989, resulted in a large number of casualties after Chinese troops fired on students and others demanding democracy in the country.
The Chinese Communist Party and the government are suppressing criticism of their handling of the incident, as the party prepares to mark the 100th anniversary of its founding in July.
The Chinese government maintains it made the right decision. Information on the incident is tightly controlled and speaking publicly about it is taboo.

Media in Hong Kong is reporting an organizer of a group for annual Tiananmen vigils has been arrested.
Chow Hang-tung, vice-chairwoman of the group, was reportedly arrested for promoting an unauthorized assembly for Friday evening.
Hong Kong police banned this year's vigil for the second year in a row, citing the pandemic.
Chow had spoken earlier with NHK. The barrister has participated in the vigils ever since she was a child and told NHK the group wouldn't let police crackdown on them.
In May, Chow said, "The memorial is one of the identities of Hongkongers. Our city is the only place in China where the Tiananmen Square incident can be remembered in such a manner. I can't let it be terminated for ongoing political suppression. With the candles, we'll protect the freedom of Hongkongers."
Police have warned people repeatedly against participating in the memorial.
Reuters reports that a police spokesperson could not immediately confirm the arrest.

The head of the Japanese government's advisory panel on the coronavirus has repeated his view that it is "not normal" for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held during the pandemic, and the events should be scaled down for a successful outcome.
Omi Shigeru told a Diet committee on Thursday that it is extremely likely there will be an increase in the movement of people when the Games are held. He stressed that thorough anti-virus measures will be impossible, unless a clear message is sent to the public asking them to "watch the events quietly at home on television."
He also said that the Japanese government and Olympic officials bear heavy responsibility and must show strong resolve if they are to go ahead with the events, or they are unlikely to obtain public support for the Games.

The United Nations' children's agency says Myanmar schools are increasingly being caught in the crossfire between the military and anti-coup protesters.
UNICEF Myanmar says there have been 54 attacks on schools and personnel since the February 1 coup. Nearly 40 happened in the last month, as explosions became commonplace.
The military has also reportedly been using educational facilities.
Schools reopened Tuesday, after the pandemic forced more than a year's closure. But many teachers and students refuse to return to class as a protest against the military junta.
UNICEF is calling on all parties in Myanmar to prioritize keeping places of learning safe.
