The Group of Seven leaders are attending the second day of their annual summit in Britain.

A declaration to be issued at the end of Saturday is expected to include a range of proposals to prevent a repeat of the coronavirus pandemic.

The G7 heads will be joined in person by the leaders of South Korea, South Africa, and Australia and online by India for the discussion on the pandemic.

The leaders will call for an ambitious 100-day target for developing new vaccines and treatments.

They are also expected to call for strengthening the World Health Organization and to collectively pledge one billion vaccine doses to the rest of the world.

Turning to security issues, the G7 leaders will also discuss China's growing prominence in the world.

US officials say that the leaders will unveil an infrastructure proposal as a response to Beijing's Belt and Road investment scheme on Saturday.

The officials say President Joe Biden intends to call out China with the other leaders over its alleged use of forced labor targeting Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow has been released from prison after serving her term for her role in a June 2019 protest.

Chow was jailed for 10 months in December last year for crimes including inciting citizens to take part in an unauthorized assembly.

She was freed on Saturday morning. Scores of reporters were waiting as she emerged from a prison vehicle but she left without answering their questions.

Chow was sent to a jail for serious offenders. Her term appears to have been reduced for good behavior.

She came to prominence as a pro-democracy activist during the 2014 Umbrella movement.

Last August, she was arrested in connection with another case for allegedly colluding with foreign forces and endangering national security. Others, including the Apple Daily newspaper founder Jimmy Lai, were also arrested at that time.

Chow was later granted bail. The investigation of that case is believed to be ongoing.

Kim reportedly urged the military to be on "high alert" as it carries out its mission to defend the country.

The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are estimating that there could be around seven new cases of COVID-19 per day among people involved in the Games.

The figure was presented on Friday at a meeting with experts to discuss anti-coronavirus measures.

The estimate, prepared by the organizing committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is based on the number of people who tested positive during a test event held last month.

The calculation assumes that about 77,000 people will take part in the Games, including athletes and staff.

The committee also says the worst-case scenario would have one athlete and 10 non-athletes hospitalized, and 57 people asked to self-quarantine.

The organizing committee says it will use these estimates to try to secure medical service for the Games without creating problems for local communities.

It also says the numbers do not take vaccinations into account, so the real figures could end up being much lower.

The committee plans to take thorough measures to prevent infections by focusing on vaccinations and measures to prevent the flow of people within the country.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 467 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday.

The figure is up 31 from a week ago, after posting a week-on-week decline for 29 straight days.

The seven-day average number of cases through Saturday stands at 390.9. That is 88.8 percent of the figure a week ago and is below 400 for the third day in a row. Total cases in Tokyo have reached 166,065.

Tokyo officials say they confirmed eight new deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities from the virus to 2,150.

They also say 46 people are in serious condition, five fewer than the previous day's figure.

More than 30 McDonald's restaurants in Indonesia have been forced to temporarily close after a new menu themed on K-pop band BTS triggered a frenzy and raised concerns about a spike in coronavirus cases.

The leading hamburger chain began selling a limited-edition meal designed in collaboration with the popular South Korean boy band on Wednesday.

It quickly drew a flood of orders, which resulted in a large number of delivery riders gathering at McDonald's outlets.

Authorities in Jakarta saw it as a breach of coronavirus rules that mandate anti-crowding steps and limit in-store capacity to no more than 50 percent.

They ordered 20 outlets to close for one or three days and issued warnings to 12 others. They will each face a fine of about 3,400 dollars.

Thirteen outlets in three cities in Java Island were also ordered to temporarily close.

Indonesia has logged the largest number of coronavirus infections and deaths in Southeast Asia. On Thursday, daily cases topped 8,000 for the first time in about three and a half months.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the US House of Representatives has introduced a package of bills aimed at curbing the power of tech giants.

They announced the legislative package in a statement on Friday.

The move comes amid growing criticism that tech firms such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, known collectively as GAFA, are undermining competition by taking advantage of their market dominance.

In October last year, a House subcommittee released a report calling for stricter regulations on these firms, including the possibility of breaking them up.

The bills, which mainly target the four giants, would require dominant platforms to prove their acquisitions are lawful. They would also prohibit them from giving preference to their own products.

One lawmaker said the four firms have become too big to care, and that the bipartisan bills would rein in monopolistic practices and restore fairness and competition.

US media outlets are reporting the legislation could force the tech giants to overhaul their business models.

Japanese Nobel laureate Negishi Ei-ichi has died at the age of 85. He was awarded the 2010 Chemistry Prize for developing a new method to synthesize organic compounds.

Negishi died in the US city of Indianapolis last Sunday, according to Purdue University, where he served as a professor.

Negishi was born in former Manchuria in northeastern China in 1935. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he worked at leading textile company Teijin before studying in the United States.

Negishi shared the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Richard Heck of the University of Delaware, and Suzuki Akira of Japan's Hokkaido University.

They developed what is called a "palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling technique" to link carbon atoms and synthesize complex organic compounds.

The technique has been used to develop new medicine, such as anti-hypertensive drugs. It has also been applied to create materials for thin LED displays.

Negishi was based in the United States, but he also collaborated with researchers in Japan studying how to create fuel from carbon dioxide through artificial photosynthesis.
