China's exports marked another significant year-on-year rise in October, likely reflecting robust demand ahead of the yearend shopping season in Western nations.
Chinese customs data released on Sunday show the country's overall trade grew by 24.3 percent to 515.9 billion dollars from the same month last year.
Exports totaled 300.2 billion dollars, up 27.1 percent from a year ago. Exports to Europe and the United States increased, with shipments of toys, clothing and home electronics rising sharply.
Imports stood at 215.6 billion dollars, up 20.6 percent year-on-year. The growth is thought to be due to the continuing high prices of raw materials such as crude oil and copper.
The growth of exports has been supporting the Chinese economy. The total amount of exports for the first 10 months of this year has already surpassed the record high for the whole of 2020.
But the global price hikes of raw materials that have pushed up imports are putting pressure on China's manufacturers and raising concerns about the country's economy.

A US federal appeals court has temporarily halted the Biden administration's vaccine requirement for businesses.
The mandate requires workers at businesses with 100 or more employees be fully vaccinated by January 4 or face mask requirements and weekly tests.
More than half of the US states with Republican governors or attorneys general had filed suits with courts to stop it.
The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in New Orleans, which has jurisdiction over the states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, suspended the mandate on Saturday citing potential "grave statutory and constitutional" issues.
The Biden administration has to respond by Monday.
Some local governments and businesses in the United States have already required their workers to get vaccinated.
But there is strong opposition from people who see the moves to get the pandemic under control as violating their individual freedom.

Several regions in Russia have extended restrictions on economic activities as the country struggles to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
President Vladimir Putin has ordered businesses across the country to suspend operations from October 30 to November 7. The government asked people to refrain from non-essential outings.
But the government reported more than 41,000 new infections on Saturday, a daily record.
The surge has strained the health care system. More than 90 percent of hospital beds are occupied in some regions.
Eateries there will not be allowed to serve customers at the establishments for another week or so.
Many local governments will continue to require people to show vaccination certificates when they enter theaters.
Russia's vaccination rate is around 30 percent, and is said to be picking up. The government is continuing to urge the public to get vaccinated.

Climate activists around the world have taken to the streets, demanding more action against global warming as discussions are underway at the UN climate change conference, COP26, in Britain.
British media report that protesters rallied on Saturday at 300 locations in Europe, Australia, South Korea, and elsewhere in response to an appeal from youth organizations and NGOs around the world.
In Glasgow, tens of thousands of people braved rain and filled streets around the venue where COP26 is being held.
With participants in ethnic costumes performing music, demonstrators marched along avenues, shouting that time is running out.
A woman living in Glasgow said demonstrators want to show those participating in the UN conference that everybody is watching them, to put pressure on them, and to make sure they're going to make change.
A woman from Canada said the Canadian government subsidizes the oil and gas industry heavily, and exports oil and gas. She said world leaders should listen to indigenous communities as they are on the front line of climate change.
COP26 President Alok Sharma told reporters he completely understands the frustration and anger that he has seen and heard from young people.
He said commitments are made, but what they want to see is delivery. Sharma said this is the COP where people need to see delivery.

Groups of victims of abuse at the hands of the Catholic Church in France are demanding concrete responses following a report which revealed more than 200,000 children were victimized by clergy over a period of 70 years.
They gathered on Saturday in Paris with victims sharing their experiences of abuse and condemned the Catholic hierarchy which has not taken any measures for so long.
A case of a man was introduced at the gathering. He was abused repeatedly by clergy when he was 11 during a summer camp.
A 46-year-old participant said that victims tend to feel ashamed but that the church should be the one to be ashamed. He added the silence that was kept too long should be broken.
An independent commission released a report of its findings early October. It was investigating sexual abuses in the Catholic Church. The report says that at least 216,000 people in France have been victims of sexual abuse between 1950 and 2020.
The French bishops finally accepted on Friday that the Catholic Church bore an "institutional responsibility" in the abuse cases.

The reelected president of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, says his country will provide all possible assistance to neighboring Afghanistan.
Mirziyoyev made the remark during his inauguration speech on Saturday. He was elected president for a second term in the October 24 election, with more than 80 percent of the vote.
The president called Afghanistan a neighbor and an important part of the region. He indicated his country will continue to support Afghanistan in every way to help it restore peace and stability and avoid an economic and humanitarian crisis.
As Afghanistan's security situation remains unstable, it is a challenge for Mirziyoyev to maintain regional stability. Uzbekistan is faced with a possible influx of Islamic extremists and drugs.
Key words : heritage fire drill

An annual fire drill has been conducted in a World Heritage village in central Japan.
Residents and volunteer firefighters of Shirakawa Village in Gifu Prefecture took part in the drill on Sunday to protect houses with distinctive steep-angled, thatched roofs.
The drill is conducted every year around this time when the air gets dry.
At 8 a.m. as a siren wailed, water gushed from 59 water cannons in various parts of the village, creating walls of water to protect the treasured houses from sparks.
In November 2019, two thatched cabins at a parking lot for tourists burned down. Residents successfully prevented the fire from spreading by manually operating the water cannons.
One of the residents said that the drill is important to raise awareness and it helps them be prepared although they were surprised by the fire two years ago.
