A senior US official overseeing the Indo-Pacific has urged greater unity among the four nations known as the Quad, in the face of intensifying competition from China. The Quad comprises Japan, the US, Australia and India.

Kurt Campbell, National Security Council Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, added Japan would host a meeting of the Quad next year.

Campbell said during an online event on Friday that the group would follow through on its commitments and was looking at new initiatives in the Indo-Pacific.

Campbell said expanded US cooperation with allies was causing "heartburn" for China, which he said sees the efforts as "Cold War thinking".

He also acknowledged the Quad is not a formal alliance but an informal gathering, and he did not think the four countries will move in the immediate future to institutionalize the group.

Campbell also referred to a new economic framework the US plans to launch in the Indo-Pacific next year. He said Washington will strengthen cooperation over a wide range of fields, including digital trade, carbon neutrality, workers' rights and supply chains.

Japanese Defense Ministry officials say Chinese and Russian bombers jointly flew near Japan on Friday.

They say two from each country traveled over the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea, before heading out to the Pacific Ocean.

They say the aircraft passed over waters between the main island of Okinawa and Miyako Island in southern Japan.

The officials say the bombers later returned to the East China Sea using a similar route. They say the Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets, and that the bombers did not enter Japanese airspace.

This is the third time the Defense Ministry has disclosed sightings of joint flights by Chinese and Russian forces near Japan. The last time was in December last year.

On Thursday, naval ships from the two countries were confirmed to have passed the Tsushima Strait off southwestern Japan.

Defense officials are raising their alert level amid a series of moves they describe as extraordinary.

Japanese Defense Ministry officials say a Chinese naval vessel has sailed through Japan's territorial waters off the southern prefecture of Kagoshima. They say they have conveyed their concerns to Beijing through diplomatic channels.

On Friday, the officials said a Chinese survey ship was spotted south of Yakushima Island at around 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday. They say it was sailing within Japan's contiguous zone toward the country's territorial waters.

They say it was then seen sailing within the contiguous zone further west, off Kuchinoerabu Island at around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday.

The ministry has concluded that the vessel passed through Japanese waters.

This is the fourth time that a Chinese naval vessel has been confirmed to have entered Japanese territorial waters, and the first since July 2017.

The ministry also said two Chinese naval ships and a Russian naval vessel passed the Tsushima Strait off southwestern Japan on Thursday, heading south from the Sea of Japan to the East China Sea.

The strait is an international waterway where foreign ships, including warships, are allowed to navigate.

Chinese and Russian naval vessels were also spotted navigating through the Tsugaru and Osumi straits in the north and south of Japan last month. They were the first simultaneous maneuvers in the waterways.

Ministry officials say they are analyzing the recent activity, which they describe as extraordinary.

The US State Department has issued a warning to China after its coast guard boats blocked the passage of Philippine resupply boats in the South China Sea. China and the Philippines are locked in a territorial dispute concerning that body of water.

Manila says two boats hired by the Philippine military were on their way to deliver supplies to troops stationed on a shoal in the Spratly Islands on Tuesday. It says three Chinese coast guard vessels blocked and used water cannon on the boats.

Beijing said that it was a legitimate response to what it described as an unapproved incursion into Chinese waters.

US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement on Friday that Washington stood by its ally, the Philippines, amid an "escalation that directly threatens regional peace and stability."

Price also noted that an armed attack on Philippine public vessels in the South China Sea would invoke US mutual defense commitments under the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty.

Washington has repeatedly said that it is illegal for China to claim the rights to control almost the entire South China Sea.

The head of the Women's Tennis Association says he is prepared to pull tournaments out of China unless tennis player Peng Shuai is accounted for.

The Chinese star has reportedly not been seen in public since early November, when she made sexual assault allegations against former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli.

In a post on social media platform Weibo, she said Zhang sexually abused her, and that they later had an extramarital relationship.

WTA Chief Executive Steve Simon said in an interview with CNN on Thursday that the body is willing to pull its business in China if her allegations are not properly investigated.

Simon also said the WTA would "deal with all the complications that come with it" because the issue is "bigger than the business."

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the matter is not diplomatic, and that he is not aware of the situation.

Concern is rising about Peng. US-based Human Rights Watch has criticized Chinese authorities, saying they "have gone to great lengths to silence critics."

Japanese tennis star Osaka Naomi and other top players have also voiced their concerns.

Japan's Foreign Ministry is considering extending the period of stay it granted to Afghan nationals who fled their country after the Taliban retook power in August.

About 400 have arrived in Japan so far. They include staff from the Japanese Embassy in Kabul and a Japanese aid agency, as well as family members.

They're staying on short-term visas valid for 90 days, but some are about to expire.

Ministry officials are taking the ongoing uncertainty in Afghanistan into consideration, and may grant the Afghans a longer "specified visa for designated activities," if they wish.

The ministry says many of the evacuees hope to return home in the future. The government plans to continue offering support to that end.

Protests against a plan by the Netherlands government to introduce stringent anti-coronavirus regulations have spilled over into violence, resulting in several injuries.

Cases have been surging in parts of Europe, and on Thursday the daily number in the Netherlands climbed to a record of more than 23,000.

The government is planning to limit access to indoor venues to people who have been fully vaccinated.

Police reportedly responded to protestors who started fires in downtown Rotterdam on Friday by firing warning shots and using a water cannon. The AFP news agency reported that seven people were injured, including police.

Last week, the government ordered restaurants, bars, and businesses selling daily necessities to cut back their hours of opening.

Other European nations have also been introducing tighter restrictions. Germany and Austria have limited some business activities in an effort to stem infections.

Researchers say one in three pregnant women in Japan may suffer from depression and other disorders due to the prolonged effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The online survey by Kindai University Oriental Medicine Research Institute covered 1,022 pregnant women from June to July. Their answers were rated against a global scale that assesses mental health.

The results suggest one in three pregnant women may be experiencing psychological problems. Depression and anxiety disorders were reported by 385 respondents, or 37.7 percent.

The researchers say the figure has almost tripled since a similar survey conducted by Yokohama City University in September last year found that 13.2 percent of respondents may be suffering depression and other disorders.

The researchers say the many cancellations of events for pregnant women during the pandemic may have left them feeling more isolated.

The research institute's director, Takeda Takashi, says psychological distress during pregnancy affects not only the mother but also the unborn baby. He says healthcare workers and governments should actively intervene to improve the situation.

France will ban pet shops from selling dogs and cats from 2024 as part of efforts to prevent abandonment.

Under a new animal welfare law approved by the Senate on Thursday, licensed breeders and shelters will be among the few options for would-be owners.

Owners will also be required to sign a commitment certificate confirming their knowledge of the needs of the animals. Purchases can be cancelled within seven days.

The provisions are designed to prevent impulsive buying, which is a factor behind abandonment.

A pet food industry association says nearly 22 million dogs and cats are kept as pets in France. But according to animal welfare groups, 100,000 are abandoned every year.

A lawmaker who co-sponsored the bill welcomed its adoption as a historic first step.

The law also bans dolphin and orca shows from 2026, and the use of wild animals in traveling circuses from 2028.

A representative of a circus association vowed to stage a protest, saying that no show animals are abused and the law is arbitrary.
