Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and a US military commander say their countries will work closely so their alliance will make them better able to deter and tackle threats.
This comes as China is stepping up its military activities in the region.
Kishida met Thursday with the Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral John Aquilino.
Kishida said, "By further promoting cooperation between Japan and the United States, we want to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific and work together for the stability of the region and the international community."
Admiral Aquilino said he'll work with the top officer of Japan's Self-Defense Forces, Yamazaki Koji.
He said, "My commitment to you is that I will work with General Yamazaki to deliver a free and open Indo-Pacific, and peace and stability, and prosperity for the region."
Japanese officials say Kishida and Aquilino shared serious concern over China's unilateral attempts to change the status quo.
They also discussed North Korea's nuclear and missile development.
They agreed it's important to steadily reorganize the US military in Japan so as to maintain deterrence and ease the burden on communities that host US facilities.
Kishida urged the US to run its bases safely.
Japan's Defense Ministry says Aquilino and SDF Chief of Staff Yamazaki inspected defense activities in southwestern Japan this week.
They visited SDF camps on the remote islands of Yonaguni and Amami-Oshima.
Ministry officials say Aquilino and Yamazaki observed the region by helicopter and shared information about the situation and SDF activities there.
The ministry is deploying new units to strengthen defense in the region.

China's Communist Party has adopted a key resolution summing up the party's 100-year history at its Central Committee's plenary session.
State-run Xinhua news agency says that the Central Committee's sixth plenary session closed in Beijing on Thursday with President Xi Jinping and more than 300 senior members of the party in attendance.
Decisions on key policies were made at the four-day meeting.
Details of the historical resolution have not been made public.
But a communique issued after the meeting says that the resolution points at the major achievements and historical experience of the Communist Party.
The communique says, "The Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has demonstrated great historical initiative, tremendous political courage, and powerful sense of mission." It says the Central Committee "has solved many tough problems that were long on the agenda but never resolved."
It also says, "They have opened up the right path for achieving rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, enabling China to complete a process of industrialization that took developed countries several centuries in the space of mere decades, and bringing about the two miracles of rapid economic growth and enduring social stability."
This historical resolution had been adopted only twice before in 1945 and 1981. Experts say the resolution will help consolidate the power bases of Xi Jinping, like former leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.

A Hong Kong court has sentenced a man to five years and nine months in prison for violating the territory's national security law. He is the second person to get a jail term under the law.
The man was charged with inciting secession by chanting slogans and holding placards calling for Hong Kong's independence from China in shopping malls and elsewhere between August and November 2020.
The judge said the man's case was serious since he repeated similar acts 20 times and that he had shown no remorse.
The 31-year-old man is known well in Hong Kong as a lone protester. When the court passed sentence, one person in the public gallery said the punishment was too heavy.
In July this year, another man was sentenced to nine years in prison under the national security law. He was found guilty of driving a motorcycle into police while displaying a slogan demanding the liberation of Hong Kong.
More than 100 people have been arrested under the national security law since it came into force in June last year. They include pro-democracy activists and politicians.
