Emergency authorities in Tokyo have conducted a joint drill on expressways and highways based on the scenario of a major earthquake occurring beneath the capital.
Nine organizations took part in Sunday's drill. They included the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the Self-Defense Forces and the Tokyo Fire Department.
A stretch of about 7 kilometers of the Metropolitan Expressway was closed from 9 a.m. The drill assumed that cargo had been scattered from a truck.
Police officers arriving at the scene removed the objects and checked if there was any damage to the road.
After safety was confirmed, a convoy of 12 vehicles, including a fire engine, headed for the city center.
In the event of a major earthquake, traffic will be restricted on expressways and major national highways in the capital except for those permitted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
Participants rehearsed emergency procedures at 106 locations, including crossings on national highways.
Tokyo police official Minowa Kenji said the drill also helped to inform the public about emergency traffic regulations.
Stressing the importance of preparation, he said related organizations plan to enhance cooperation.

Racks of pumice stones from an underwater volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ocean have washed ashore on Miyake Island, one of Tokyo's southern Izu islands.
Local officials and fishers reported on Friday that floating pumice had reached Miyake Island.
On Saturday morning, an NHK crew found pumice stones stretching along about 15 meters of beach in the eastern part of the island.
The crew also saw strips of pumice floating offshore.
Workers are rushing to lay oil barriers at the mouths of five ports on the island by the end of Saturday to prevent the stones from entering.
Since early November, small amounts of pumice stone have been spotted in waters around the Izu Islands.
Researchers at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, or JAMSTEC, have released results of a simulation that suggest a large amount of pumice could reach the islands over the weekend.
Pumice stones began to wash ashore on beaches in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, in mid-October, affecting the fishery and tourism industries. Most of the stones have been found on Okinawa's main island.
On Saturday, strips of small pumice stones, measuring less than one centimeter in diameter, were found on a beach on Miyako Island, about 300 kilometers from the main island.

Biden announced the results of a checkup on Friday. His doctor described him as a "healthy, vigorous, 78-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency."
The president said he felt good, adding jokingly that he was looking forward to celebrating his 58th birthday.
Biden's health has been a focus of attention since he was inaugurated.

North Korea has reacted sharply to a resolution by a United Nations committee condemning human rights violations in the country.
The resolution adopted on Wednesday was co-sponsored by 60 countries including Japan. It included a call for Pyongyang to immediately return all people its agents have abducted from Japan and South Korea.
A spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry issued a statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Sunday.
The statement says North Korea categorically rejects the resolution of the United States and other "hostile forces" as "a grave infringement upon the sovereignty aimed at tarnishing the prestigious image" of the country.
The statement says the countries picking on North Korea's "human rights issue" are "unexceptionally the worst violators of human rights," citing racial discrimination, violence against women and police violence among others.
It also says human rights issue is "misused by some countries as a means for realizing their sinister intentions."
The UN has adopted a resolution condemning the human rights situation in North Korea every year since 2005.

Demonstrators have taken to the streets in the French capital to protest government policies, including measures against soaring gasoline prices.
About 1,000 people from across the country gathered in central Paris on Saturday, to mark three years after the first "yellow vest" protest was held to challenge President Emmanuel Macron's administration.
Participants said the government's response to the surge in energy prices was insufficient. They also criticized the COVID-19 measures.
An organizer of the rally said gasoline prices have risen 25 percent since the start of the protests three years ago, hitting households hard.
One participant in her 50s said prices have risen further in the past three years and people's lives are getting worse. She vowed to continue the protests until the situation improves.
The "yellow vest" movement forced the French government to suspend the fuel tax hike and reduce income taxes.
How to reduce burdens on households will likely be a focal point in the run-up to the presidential election scheduled for next April.

A flock of swans has arrived from Russia at a river in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido to spend the winter.
Whooper swans began arriving at the mouth of the Osaru River in Date City in early October, about a week earlier than usual.
Around 100 swans, including young ones, have gathered in their wintering place.
Some dip their necks into the water to look for waterweed. Others fly in groups to nearby rice paddies and farm fields to hunt for grains.
Local birdwatcher Shinohara Morio says the number of swans will likely increase to around 400, and they will return northward to Russia in late March.
