Russia's forces are ramping up their offensive in eastern Ukraine. They are reportedly closing in on the key city of Mariupol.

The development comes more than four weeks after the start of the invasion.

Russian forces are believed to have already taken parts of Mariupol. The city has seen some of the heaviest fighting. A US think tank says it is likely the troops will fully capture Mariupol in the coming weeks.

Russia's defense ministry says the military used short-range Iskandar ballistic missiles to attack Ukraine's military air defense system in Kyiv Oblast.

It says cruise missile attacks were also carried out nearby.

Russian troops have been facing heavy resistance in those areas.

Russian rockets hit the western city of Lviv on Saturday. Local authorities say seven people were wounded.

Multiple explosions occurred at a fuel depot and at a military-related facility. The city sits about 60 kilometers away from the border with Poland.

Russian forces also seized the town of Slavutych which is home to about 200 workers at the defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has expressed deep concerns.

The agency's director general Rafael Grossi stressed that it is important for the staff to be able to regularly rotate and rest at home.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu says the military is delivering weapons and equipment to the front lines. He said the priority is on long-range high-precision weapons and aircraft equipment.

He adds that another priority is maintaining the engagement readiness of strategic nuclear forces.

British defense officials say Russian forces are reluctant to carry out large-scale infantry operations in urban areas.

They say the forces are instead using air and artillery bombardments indiscriminately, with the aim of demoralizing Ukrainian fighters.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights says at least 1,081 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia's invasion began on February 24. The figure includes 93 children.

The agency says the actual death toll is believed to be considerably higher because it cannot corroborate casualty reports from the eastern port city of Mariupol and other locations under intense attacks.

As of Thursday, 344 deaths were reported in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. A further 737 were confirmed in other regions including the capital Kyiv, Kharkiv in the east, Chernihiv in the north, and Kherson in the south.

The UN agency also says 1,707 people have been wounded.

Key words : Biden warned

US President Joe Biden has warned that Russia is attacking democracy itself through its invasion of Ukraine. He severely criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, "This man cannot remain in power."

Biden delivered a speech in the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Saturday to wind up his European tour to hammer out support for Ukraine.

Biden said, "Russia has strangled democracy and sought to do so elsewhere." He added that Putin can put an end to this war, and it must be stopped.

Shortly after Biden's speech, a White House official explained that the president's point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region.

The official said, "He was not discussing Putin's power in Russia, or regime change."

Media outlets are reporting that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov sharply reacted by saying, "That's not for Biden to decide. The president of Russia is elected by Russians".

Tensions between the two sides are rising further.

The continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine has put the Transdniestria region in the spotlight. The area shares a border with western Ukraine.

The region unilaterally declared independence from Moldova in 1990. The breakaway region is de facto free from Moldovan government control.

Ethnic Russians form a significant portion of the population. More than 1,500 Russian troops are reportedly stationed there with a large amount of weapons and ammunition.

Russian soldiers and tanks are in position along roads leading to the central part of the region.

Russian flags are flying side by side with Transdniestrian flags in the center of the region.

In front of a local government building stands a statue of Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin.

Obsolete tanks made in former Soviet Union are displayed.

Observers say a possible scenario of the Russian military is to build a corridor to Transdniestria from the eastern part of Ukraine, where pro-Russian armed groups are dominant.

The Moldovan government says Russian troops in the region have not made any apparent moves.

Many residents in the breakaway region support Russia. Some say "Everybody supports Putin although a bloody war is not good" or "Russia is only trying to bring peace to Ukraine."

The chief of Myanmar's military junta threatened to annihilate pro-democracy forces in a speech at the Armed Forces Day celebration in the capital, Naypyitaw, on Sunday.

The military holds a large-scale parade every year on the day when the fight for independence started during the Pacific War in 1945 against the now-defunct Imperial Japanese military.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing referred to the fighting with pro-democracy forces, saying the military will no longer negotiate with the "terrorist" group and their supporters, and will annihilate them.

More than 8,000 soldiers took part in the parade, which featured Russian and Chinese-made heavy artillery, tanks and aircraft.

Fierce battles between armed pro-democracy forces and the military are continuing in mountainous areas and other regions.

The United Nations says many people on both sides have been killed and more than 500,000 have been displaced.

The military continues to crack down on peaceful protesters.

A local human rights group says more than 1,700 people have been killed, and nearly 13,000 have been arrested.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel have visited Hiroshima to offer prayers for victims of the 1945 atomic bombing.

The two visited the Peace Memorial Park on Saturday.

They toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Among the displays are paper cranes donated by then US President Barack Obama during his trip to the city in 2016.

Kishida and Emanuel then laid flowers and prayed at a cenotaph dedicated to the atomic bombing victims.

Their visit came amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin has put the country's deterrence forces, including nuclear weapons, on high alert.

In a conversation with Emanuel, Kishida said there is a real concern that Russia could use nuclear weapons. He stressed that weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms, should never be used.

Kishida said the ambassador's visit to the atomic-bombed city will send a strong message to the international community.

Emanuel said that Russia's "illegal war" against Ukraine has sparked "global condemnation."

East Japan Railway has begun work to move a Shinkansen bullet train that derailed in a powerful earthquake earlier this month.

The bullet train was running on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in Miyagi Prefecture on March 16 when a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off Japan's northeast coast. Of the 17 cars in the train, 16 came off the tracks. Four passengers were injured.

The operator has been working to get the derailed cars back on the tracks since March 20.

On Sunday, workers connected the first and second cars to a traction vehicle to move them to Shiroishizao Station about 2 kilometers away. The vehicle took around 20 minutes to tow the cars to the station.

JR East expects all the cars will be removed from the site by around next weekend. The cars will then be moved to a base in the prefecture.

Service remains suspended between Koriyama Station in Fukushima Prefecture and Ichinoseki Station in Iwate Prefecture. The company aims to fully resume service around April 20.
