Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his intention to play an active role in resolving the Ukraine situation.
Xi held a video conference with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday.
China's Foreign Ministry quoted Macron and Scholz as saying that Europe is facing the worst crisis since World War Two.
The two leaders said they are ready to strengthen communication and coordination with China to promote talks for peace, and prevent further escalation of the situation.
Xi stressed that the current situation in Ukraine is worrisome and the Chinese side is deeply grieved by the outbreak of war again on the European continent.
He said the pressing task at the moment is to prevent the tense situation from escalating or even spiraling out of control.
Praising the mediation efforts by France and Germany, Xi said China will stay in communication with them and the European Union, and in light of the needs of the parties involved, work actively together with the international community.
But he opposed sanctions against Russia, saying they will affect global finance, energy, transportation and stability of supply chains, and dampen the global economy.

Taiwanese authorities say they have collected an equivalent of 10.6 million dollars in donations for Ukraine in less than a week.
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen announced last Wednesday that she, the vice president and the premier will each donate a month's salary for humanitarian relief.
Tsai called on the public to make donations too.
Taiwan's foreign ministry announced on Monday that 300 million New Taiwan dollars have been sent to its special account over the past six days.
Authorities have decided to send around one third of it to Poland, which has accepted the largest number of Ukrainian evacuees.
Some will be sent to Slovakia and elsewhere. Donations will be accepted through April 1.
Last week, Taiwan sent 27 tons of humanitarian relief supplies to Poland. Tsai said the plight of the Ukrainian people has been met with deep empathy from the people of Taiwan, as Taiwan also stands on the front line of the battle for democracy.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu suggested on Monday that if China's leaders believe that the West's response to the Russian invasion is weak and lacks impact, they could take that as a positive sign for an invasion of Taiwan.
Wu urged democracies around the world to unite against the threat of authoritarianism.

The Japanese government has revised downward its estimate of economic growth in the final quarter of 2021.
The Cabinet Office said on Wednesday that the economy in the October to December period expanded in real terms from the previous quarter at an annualized rate of 4.6 percent. Its preliminary reading was a 5.4 percent increase.
The change reflects a downturn in personal consumption and corporate capital investment.
Consumer spending accounts for more than half of the GDP in the world's third largest economy.
It was revised downward to a 2.4 percent increase from the previous quarter.
Corporate capital expenditure was also lackluster. It was changed to a 0.3 percent uptick.
