Japan Embassy in Russia Tries to Visit Detained Reporter
A Japanese embassy official in Russia has attempted to check on a detained Japanese journalist accused of spying, but the meeting did not take place.
Russia's Federal Security Service, or FSB, announced on Tuesday that a correspondent of the Hokkaido Shimbun press had been detained in the far eastern region of Sahalin.
The FSB says the man has been transferred to Moscow.
On Friday, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru said the embassy had received a consular notification about the detention from the Russian side.
An embassy official then went to the Lefortovo detention center in eastern Moscow to check on the man's well-being but could not see him.
The embassy says officials coordinated with the Russian side before heading there on Friday.
The embassy said it could not disclose why the visit did not take place but will urge Russia to allow for a meeting as soon as possible.
WSJ Reporter Describes Detention in Russia
And a US reporter who had a similar ordeal as the Japanese journalist tells NHK the conditions can be incredibly harsh.
Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal knows how it feels.
Russian authorities detained him in the central city of Yekaterinburg.
He was later moved to a facility in Moscow.

It's psychologically difficult. It's a very isolating prison. Inmates are kept in very tiny cells.
You can walk about six or seven steps in both directions.
You also spend in a normal day 23 hours in your cell and you get one hour to walk on the roof of the prison.

Gershkovich's ordeal began in 2023. He was sentenced to 16 years in a penal colony.

Having been a reporter in Russia for five and a half years before the arrest I understood You know in retrospect once I'm arrested I realized it's a fabric why it's a fabricated case how they set me up.

He was released in a prisoner exchange after being held for more than a year. He now fears Russia is targeting reporters more often.

And so what happened with my arrest was this
Perhaps not a surprise that the Russian government acts this way at this point in 2023 when I'm arrested, but a shock that they would cross this line with a foreign correspondent. And I think now that's become the norm.

Gershkovich suggests the Japanese journalist may also be the victim of a setup.
War in Ukraine: Putin Touts Military Gains
Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country has seized control of about 6,500 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory this year.
Putin made the announcement on Friday when he visited a Russian military command post.
He met the General Staff leadership, including Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.
The president said 310 settlements have been liberated in the seized area.
He appeared to be emphasizing it's Russia that holds the upper hand on the battlefield in an attempt to impress US President Donald Trump.
Referring to a security zone that Russian forces are establishing inside Ukraine, Putin said that Russia's goal is to ensure the absolute security of its border regions for the future.
Also on Friday, officials in the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa wrote on social media that four people were injured when Russian attacks on private homes, an energy facility and other locations caused large scale fires.

Media: White House Spokesperson Out After 5 Days in Job
US media outlets say White House Press Secretary Katie Zachariah is stepping down after serving in the role for only five days.
The reports came in on Friday following questions over Zachariah's ability to conduct a news conference and her qualifications as an attorney.
Prior to the news, US President Trump spoke to reporters at the White House.

I said to her, Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider.
You think about it, but I wouldn't reconsider.

Trump and Zachariah have not officially announced her resignation, but the White House told NHK that Zachariah is set to depart.
Trump introduced Zachariah as an attorney when he appointed her, but later it was revealed that she did not pass the bar exam.
During her first news conference, Zakaria took questions from only three reporters and ended the session after just 15 minutes, prompting frustration from the press.
US Aircraft Carrier Makes Port Call in Japan
A US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has made a port call in Japan.
It's going to conduct maintenance and take on supplies.
A news website about the US Navy says it's expected to head to the Middle East.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt entered a base in Yokosuka City near Tokyo.
City officials say this is the first time it's been to the base.
The website says the strike group is on what will likely be an extended Middle East deployment.
It says the group is expected to relieve the Japan-based USS George Washington.
That carrier is currently operating in the Middle East.
Tensions have been running high over the situation in Iran.
US President Trump has hinted he may resume military attacks after the midterm elections in November.
