Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to maximize pressure on North Korea to give up its missile and nuclear development. He also suggested they agreed that China should play a greater role on the matter.
Abe was speaking at a joint news conference with Trump after their summit talks in Tokyo on Monday.
Abe said the US president's Asia tour is a historic visit amid growing tensions in the region. He said the 2 leaders were able to show the world the unshakable bond of the Japan-US alliance.
Abe added they analyzed the latest situation on North Korea and completely agreed on what measures to take.
The Prime Minister said he's been consistent in supporting Trump's stance that all options are on the table. He also said they strongly reaffirmed that Japan and the United States are 100 percent together.
Abe said that nobody is hoping for war, including himself and President Trump. However, he said North Korea has been repeating provocations in defiance of the international order. He stressed the importance of creating circumstances that encourage Pyongyang to sit and talk about changing its policy.
Abe said he will announce on Tuesday a freezing of the assets of 35 North Korean organizations and individuals to step up Japan's own sanctions measure.
Abe also said Japan needs to expand its defense capability in quality and quantity amid the severe security situation in the Asia-Pacific region.
He said Japan will be purchasing more F-35 fighter jets and new SM-3 Block IIA ballistic missile interceptors from the United States.
Answering a question from a reporter, Abe said Japan will shoot down a North Korean missile, if necessary. He added that Japan and the US are working closely together on missile interception.
On trade, Abe said Japan and the US will continue talks in their economic dialogue framework. He said he and Trump will play a leading role in creating high-level rules on trade and investment not just for the 2 countries but for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Abe added that maintaining and strengthening maritime order in the Indian and Pacific oceans is crucial for regional peace and stability. He said the 2 leaders agreed that they will bolster cooperation to bring about free and open Indian and Pacific oceans.

A new round of UN climate change talks will start in Germany on Monday. The meeting will be the first since the United States decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, or COP23, will begin in the German city of Bonn.
More than 190 countries and territories will take part.
The Paris Agreement on Climate Change came into effect last year in November. It requires all nations, including developing countries, to make an effort to reduce emissions of greenhouse gasses.
Delegates are expected to negotiate in order to come up with concrete rules for the agreement by the next round in 2018.
They will discuss how to report their reduction goals and updated efforts to fulfil them. They will also discuss ways to assess those reports.
COP 23 will be the first full-fledged international climate conference since the Trump Administration announced its decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement. The US is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gasses.
During the COP session, an event will be held with US state governors and representatives from major companies who support efforts to combat climate change.
The conference will end on November 17th. A ministerial meeting will start on the 15th.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to work with the United States and the international community to resolve the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea.
The remark came during Abe and visiting US President Donald Trump's meeting with relatives of abductees at the State Guest House in Tokyo on Monday.
The relatives group included its leader Shigeo Iizuka, Sakie Yokota, the mother of Megumi Yokota, who was kidnapped when she was 13, and former abductee Hitomi Soga, who returned to Japan in 2002.
Abe said he wants people around the world to know that families of abducted Japanese have continued to suffer for 40 years.
He renewed his pledge to do his utmost to resolve the issue by strengthening cooperation with President Trump and people all over the world.
Trump said the stories he just heard were truly sad. He said the abductions were carried out by North Korea, and that the US will make efforts to bring back the abductees to their families.
Trump is the third US president to meet the abductees' families, following similar meetings with former US president George W Bush in 2006, and Barack Obama in 2014.

Relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea say they have asked the US president to resolve the issue together with Japan's prime minister.
The family group met reporters following their meeting with Shinzo Abe and Donald Trump in Tokyo on Monday.
Takuya Yokota, a brother of Megumi Yokota, who was abducted at the age of 13, said the relatives brought photos of the abductees with them.
He said he was impressed with Trump holding and gazing at an old family photo of theirs taken when they were living together in peace and joy.
His mother, Sakie, said she asked the president to help the families secure their loved ones' return.
The head of the group, Shigeo Iizuka, said he told Trump they are aware of North Korea's missile and nuclear programs, but they want Trump, together with Abe, to place utmost priority on the abduction issue. His sister Yaeko Taguchi was abducted by North Korea in 1978.
Former abductee Hitomi Soga was abducted together with her mother. Hitomi was able to return to Japan in 2002 along with 4 others, but the fate of her mother remains unknown.
Soga said Trump told her it was good that she could return. She said she replied that she wants her mother to come home to Japan as soon as possible, as she would now be 86 years old.

North Korea has criticized US President Donald Trump, saying his administration is planning a military exercise in the Asia-Pacific region with 3 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
The ruling Korean Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, carried a commentary on Monday that denounced the Trump administration's policy on North Korea.
The commentary said 3 aircraft carriers have been deployed to the US Navy's 7th Fleet area of operations in the Western Pacific.
It said the US plans a military drill with the carriers, calling it an extremely dangerous situation that hints at the launch of war.
Regarding Donald Trump's Asian tour, the commentary said it is ridiculous to try to demonstrate his power by bringing strategic nuclear weapons with him.
It stressed that the North is ready to punish Trump's war provocation with its "sacred sword" of nuclear weapons.
On Sunday, North Korea's state media warned President Trump to keep his mouth shut if he wants to avoid the destruction of his country.
North Korea is increasingly defiant against the US administration, which it sees as trying to increase pressure on it through Trump's Asian tour.
