Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has arrived in the Philippines for meetings with leaders from Southeast Asian countries.

US President Donald Trump says he wants to get along with Russia to work on world problems, including North Korea, which is developing nuclear and missile programs.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono is working on a plan to visit Bangladesh to help ease the plight of minority Rohingya Muslims.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has arrived in the Philippines for meetings with leaders from Southeast Asian countries.
Abe will take part in the ASEAN Plus 3 Summit, which includes Japan, China and South Korea.
He will also attend the East Asia Summit, which includes the United States and China, to talk about political and security issues.
Abe wants to discuss North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. He also plans to stress Japan's commitment to promoting the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region.
On the sidelines of the meetings, the prime minister will hold talks with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Trump, who is making his first Asian tour as US President, met Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang in the country's capital, Hanoi, on Sunday.
The 2 leaders agreed to step up the pressure on the North to the maximum.
Trump offered to help mediate or arbitrate between China and Vietnam over their territorial dispute in the South China Sea.
China has been constructing military facilities on its artificial islands in the sea.
In a joint news conference, Trump referred to Russia and said he wants to get along with the country because there are many problems that need to be solved.
Commenting on Russia's alleged meddling in last year's US presidential election, Trump said he sides with the US intelligence agencies, although he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin when he denied the accusations.
As for his comment on Twitter that he tries hard to be North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's friend, he said it may be strange but is possible, and it would be good for both North Korea and the world.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force says it has carried out a 2-day joint drill with 3 US aircraft carriers in the Sea of Japan.
The drill that ended on Sunday was apparently aimed at deterring North Korea's provocative actions.
The Maritime Self-Defense Force says the vessels that took part in the joint drill included the USS Ronald Reagan, Theodore Roosevelt and Nimitz as well as the Japanese destroyers Ise, Inazuma and Makinami.
The vessels performed warning and surveillance exercises.
An image released by the Maritime Self-Defense Force shows the ships navigating in formation.
The US Navy and Japan's Self-Defense Force sent crewmembers to check the sharing of information with other vessels.
The 3 US carriers are scheduled to continue drills with the South Korean military in the western Pacific until Tuesday.

Around 200 people have marched around the meeting venue in Bonn to protest against US President Donald Trump.
Trump announced that he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Demonstrators called him harmful not only to the United States but also to the world.
Some were wearing a Trump mask while others carried a sign that read, "What Trump says are all lies."
A woman in her 20's said that climate change measures can be delayed by dozens of years by Trump and that the world should recognize it.
Many participants specifically protested against power generation using coal which emits a lot of greenhouse gasses.
One of them said that she is angry at Trump and at his support for the coal mining industry.

Major Japanese banks are streamlining their operations as low interest rates squeeze their profits and fewer customers visit their branches.
Sources close to the industry say Mizuho Financial Group plans to cut its payroll from 79,000 to 60,000 over the next 10 years.
It plans to hire fewer new employees. It also plans to cut the number of branches by 100, or about 20 percent, and focus more on asset management consultation.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is trying to cut office work now done by 9,500 people over the next 7 years.
And Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group is trying to do that with work now done by 4,000 employees by the end of March 2020.
Analysts say they expect more people to use online banking services as financial technology becomes more widely used.
