Authorities on the island of Hawaii are warning people that volcanic activity will continue at Mount Kilauea, as reports of damage from Thursday's eruption continue to come in.

An official with the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says it is hard to tell when the eruption will be over. The USGS is maintaining an evacuation order for about 1,700 residents.

Local officials say they have confirmed 5 buildings were burned and they have detected toxic gases, as lava continues flowing into the woods and residential areas.

As magma shifted through the volcano, a magnitude-6.9 earthquake hit the area on Friday, causing landslides and power outages.

No one has been reported injured so far. But more cracks have been found that could allow lava to shoot into the air.

The eruption has also forced officials to close down a major tourist destination, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

A Russian opposition leader and more than 1,600 protesters have been detained at nationwide rallies against Vladimir Putin. The Russian president is on the verge of being sworn in to a fourth term on Monday.

Anti-Putin rallies were held in a number of cities on Saturday, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok in the Far East.

Opposition leader Alexei Navalny had called for the nationwide demonstrations against Putin's rule.

Thousands of protesters in central Moscow chanted "Putin is a thief" and "Russia without Putin."

Police forcibly removed Navalny when he tried to join the rally.
They also beat demonstrators with batons and hauled them away.

A Russian human rights group says more than 1,600 people have been detained in 27 cities.

Putin won reelection to another 6-year term in March with more than 76 percent of the vote. Navalny was barred from the race.

Putin's opponents blame him for rampant corruption and a stagnant economy. Oil prices are low and economic sanctions over the Ukrainian crisis continue to bite.

North Korea has criticized the US and Japan for using pressure to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson made the remark via state-run media on Sunday.

The US administration has said it will maintain a policy of maximum pressure on North Korea until the country takes concrete measures for denuclearization.

The spokesperson said the actions of the US are a dangerous attempt to ruin the hard-won atmosphere of dialogue and bring the situation back to square one.
The spokesperson also said it would not be conducive to resolving the issue of denuclearization if Washington continued to pursue its pressure and military threats.

Analysts say Pyongyang is hoping that the US will ease sanctions through the planned US-North Korea summit and other dialogue.

An editorial in Sunday's edition of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, also criticized Japan for trying to seek dialogue with the North by following the example of the US and South Korea. It says Japan is trying to take a free ride to Pyongyang, where a peaceful wind is blowing.

The editorial warns that Japan will not be able to step on North Korean territory for hundreds of millions of years as long as it retains such an insolent intention.
It demands that Japan should abandon the policy of maintaining pressure on the North.

Nissan Motor says it will stop selling diesel cars in Europe.

The company has been selling a variety of diesel vehicles, including SUV and compact cars, which became popular in Europe due to better fuel efficiency compared to gasoline cars.

However, European consumers have been moving away from diesel cars after Volkswagen's emissions data falsification came to light 3 years ago.

Governments have also tightened environmental regulations on diesel cars.

Nissan decided not to install diesel engines on any of the new models to be sold in Europe as it starts to phase out sales.

The company plans instead to expand sales of hybrid cars and electric vehicles that have zero emissions.

Many car makers are shifting from diesel cars to electric and other types of vehicles in Europe.

Toyota is also planning to cut down sales of diesel cars.

Private-sector analysts in Japan predict the country's GDP growth for this year's January to March period will be flat or lower than the previous quarter.

The Cabinet Office is scheduled to release the figure later this month.

The forecasts of 10 research companies range from minus 0.6 percent to plus 0.5 percent in real terms.

All of them say personal consumption, which makes up more than half of Japan's GDP, was flat or decreased. They say consumption slowed because heavy snow in January and February caused vegetable prices to rise and people to stay at home.

The analysts also expect a decline in housing investment, citing a slowdown in housing starts for rental apartments.

They also predict growth in capital investment and exports will have slowed.

However, the research companies say the factors contributing to slow GDP growth are temporary, and that the overall recovery trend is unchanged.

Sexual minorities and their supporters have paraded in central Tokyo to promote equality and greater awareness of LGBT issues.

The participants in Sunday's event in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts included lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. They carried banners and placards with rainbow colors, a symbol of sexual diversity. The messages stressed the importance of tolerance in society.

The organizer says a record 37 organizations, including companies and embassies, supported the 7th annual event.

A 26-year-old bisexual woman who joined the parade says people waved to them and gave everyone a warm welcome.

She says thoughtful consideration for others will help to create a better society.
