Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he wants to use such occasions as the G7 summit in Canada to convey Japan's position on North Korea to President Donald Trump, ahead of next month's US-North Korean summit.

Abe also told a Diet session on Monday that he hopes to be briefed directly by Trump on the US-North Korean summit after the talks.

At the Diet deliberation, a senior ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker referred to the abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea.

The LDP legislator pointed out that dialogue would be necessary to resolve the abduction issue although Japan has continued to keep pressure on North Korea.

Abe said the issue cannot be fully settled without talks between Japan and North Korea, and that Japan's own efforts are necessary to resolve it.

He said a Japan-North Korea summit should be one leading to the settlement of the abduction issue, and that his government has conveyed its views to Pyongyang through every possible channel.

The prime minister also said he will fully cooperate for the upcoming US-North Korean summit so that it will provide an opportunity for progress and settlement on the North Korean issues.

A delegation from North Korea has arrived in China.

An NHK film crew confirmed that the North Korean envoys flew into an airport in Beijing on Monday.

Security at the airport was tight, with a heavy police presence.

A motorcade led by security vehicles then left the airport through a gate reserved for dignitaries.

The delegation was greeted by the North's ambassador to China, indicating that it includes a key North Korean figure.

Beijing and Pyongyang are apparently boosting their high-level exchanges ahead of the first-ever summit between the United States and the North.

The North's leader, Kim Jong Un, was in China again last week following a visit in March.

Police in Indonesia have revealed that members of the same family were behind suicide bomb attacks on 3 churches on Sunday.

The string of explosions occurred in the country's second largest city of Surabaya in eastern Java on Sunday morning.

At a news conference on Sunday evening, police said they have concluded that the leader of a local organization supporting the Islamic State militant group and 5 other members of his family carried out the suicide attacks on the 3 Christian churches.

Seven people were killed and 41 others wounded in the blasts. All the 6 family members also died.

Police say the father crashed a car loaded with explosives into one church, while his 2 sons aged 18 and 16 ignited bombs at an entrance to another church.
They say the mother and her 2 daughters aged 12 and 9 detonated explosives they were wearing inside a third church.

Police say they have confirmed that the family travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State group.
The militant group also claims responsibility online for Sunday's blasts.

The terror attacks by a family including young children sent shockwaves through Indonesia.
Police there have stepped up the alert for similar attacks.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo visited the sites and described terrorism as a crime against humanity.
Strongly criticizing Sunday's attacks, he said they cannot be connected with any kind of religion.
He called on people to unite and fight against terrorism.

Iraq's electoral commission has announced partial results in the country's first parliamentary election since it declared victory over Islamic State extremists. The commission puts a coalition led by an influential cleric in the lead.

Election officials are still counting the ballots that were cast on Saturday. Voter turnout was around 44 percent. They say it may have been a record low.

According to the officials' latest announcement, the political coalition of Shia Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has an early lead. His supporters have fought with US troops in the past.

An alliance backed by Shia parliamentary groups and led by former minister Hadi al-Amiri was in second place. It's reportedly supported by Iran.
Incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's coalition is in third place.

The rankings could still change, with final results to be announced in a few days. But no party is likely to win a majority needed to choose the prime minister and form the government. Negotiations on forming a coalition are expected.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is answering questions in the Diet about allegations of favoritism that relate to a newly opened veterinary school. His administration is also under pressure over controversies at the Finance Ministry.

Abe is standing by his claim that he knew nothing about meetings between his former secretary and representatives of the school operator, Kake Educational Institution.

Abe said that his secretaries don't usually brief him about who comes to meet with them. He said they would only report a meeting if they needed him to make a decision, so unless it involves something important for the nation, they don't inform him about developments.

Opposition lawmakers are grilling Abe over his former secretary's testimony last week.

Tadao Yanase admitted that he met representatives of the school operator at the prime minister's office 3 times in 2015.

The school at the heart of the scandal opened last month in western Japan. Local governments provided free land and are offering subsidies worth tens of millions of dollars.

The head of the institution behind the school is Kotaro Kake, Abe's longtime friend.

The opposition claims Yanase's testimony deepens suspicions that the Abe administration helped the bid to open the school.

But the prime minister has always denied he was involved, and says he sees no problem with the approval process.

Abe was also asked about comments that Finance Minister Taro Aso retracted last week that appeared to downplay sexual harassment.

Abe said that trust in the Finance Ministry has already been shaken from the issue involving official documents. He said he wants the Finance Minister to take the lead and turn around the organization to regain people's trust.

The ministry is under fire over document tampering, as well as a sexual harassment case that forced the resignation of its top bureaucrat.

Major Japanese retailer, Aeon, is building a new shopping mall in Vietnam. The Japanese retail industry is increasing efforts to expand its operations in the fast-growing Southeast Asian and Chinese markets, to cope with a shrinking population and sales back home.

Aeon's 6th mall in Vietnam is being built in the port city of Haiphong, about 100 kilometers from the capital, Hanoi.

The 3-story structure will have 74,000 square meters of floor space. The outlet is set to open in 2020.

Around 500 people gathered at the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday. Attendees included Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Japan's Ambassador to Vietnam, Kunio Umeda, spoke at the event. He said the mall will create many jobs and contribute to regional economic growth, as restaurants in it can use local ingredients.

Aeon Mall President Akio Yoshida said the firm plans to further expand its store network in Vietnam.

Aeon launched its 1st mall in the country 4 years ago to tap Vietnam's more than 6 percent annual growth.

Japan Airlines is launching a low-cost carrier that will offer mid- to long-distance international flights. The company's executives hope to have it off the ground around the summer of 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Olympics and Paralympics.

The firm announced on Monday that it will set up the new entity as early as July.

Officials say the new airline will fly 2 planes from Narita airport near Tokyo to major cities in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

They plan to keep costs low by selling tickets online and by offering more seats than on regular international flights.

Japan Airlines already operates a low-cost carrier, Jetstar Japan, in partnership with an Australian company.

Japan Airlines President Yuji Akasaka pointed out that there is a limit to how many foreign visitors the airline can carry with short-haul flights alone. He said there is definitely a need for a casual and comfortable way to travel for people living farther away.

Rival ANA Holdings plans to expand its low-cost routes by merging its subsidiaries Peach Aviation and Vanilla Air by the end of March 2020.

A planned merger between 2 leading US and Japanese printer and copier companies has been called off due to shareholder opposition.

Executives at Japan's Fujifilm Holdings said in January that they had reached an agreement with Xerox to merge the US firm with a subsidiary.

But Carl Icahn and another major Xerox shareholder opposed the transaction, claiming Fujifilm had undervalued the American company.

Xerox now says it has reached a settlement with the shareholders and is terminating the merger.

It says CEO Jeff Jacobson and several other executives will be replaced.

Xerox plans to appoint a new leadership and discuss alternative strategies.

Icahn said in a statement he's extremely pleased that Xerox ended the deal. He called it a new beginning.
