Top economic officials from the United States and China say they will take measures to substantially reduce the US trade deficit in goods with China.

Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin and other US officials held talks on trade with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He in Washington on Thursday and Friday.

Their joint statement says that both sides agreed on meaningful increases in US agriculture and energy exports.

Washington is urging Beijing to reduce the US trade deficit by 200 billion dollars, but the statement does not mention how and how much should be reduced.

It says both sides agreed to continue to discuss these issues at high levels.

The statement also says that China will amend its laws and regulations to better protect intellectual property.

The Trump administration says it will impose additional tariffs on a range of imports from China, claiming that those tariffs are to offset Chinese violations of intellectual property rights. China has been preparing to respond with retaliatory measures.

US officials say they are considering ways to ease trade restrictions that are choking operations at a major Chinese telecom-equipment maker ZTE. But the joint statement does not refer to the issue.

ZTE is being penalized for allegedly violating an agreement with Washington over illegal shipments to Iran and North Korea.

US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have been discussing the apparent shift in attitude from North Korea.

South Korea's presidential office says the 2 leaders talked over the phone on Sunday.

Pyongyang last week threatened to cancel the June 12th US-North Korea summit if Washington insists that the North must unilaterally abandon its nuclear weapons.

It also called off ministerial-level talks with Seoul, citing a US-South Korea joint military drill. Pyongyang is demanding that the drill be cancelled to resume dialogue.

Trump and Moon are believed to have exchanged views on what North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's intentions may be.

South Korea's presidential office says Trump and Moon agreed to hold close consultations to make the US-North Korea summit a success.

Trump is expected to host Moon in Washington on Tuesday.

China says its bombers have carried out a drill at an airfield on an island in the South China Sea for the first time.

China's Air Force announced on Friday its H6K and other bombers took part in take-off and landing exercises on an island in South China Sea. The H6K is a long-range bomber capable of carrying large, long-range cruise missiles.

The Air Force did not disclose exactly when and where the drill was conducted. But a US think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said on Friday the location of the runway was believed to be one of the Paracel Islands.

China has also constructed runways on artificial islands it built on reefs in the Spratly Islands.

The think tank says China may deploy the H6K to the Spratly Islands.

Several Southeast Asian countries dispute China's claim to the islands. The United States has been sending its naval ships close to the islands in what it calls freedom of navigation operations.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has explained her policies online in an apparent attempt to regain public support by appealing to young people.

She spoke in a live webcast on Sunday, the second anniversary of her inauguration.

Tsai was asked why the wealth gap is still a problem in Taiwan.

She responded that her administration is urging companies to increase wages for new employees to help young urban residents.

In a video that was released online on the same day, Tsai stressed there has been no change in Taiwan's position of maintaining the status quo in relations with China.

Referring to increasing pressure from China, Tsai said Taiwan must have the resolve to overcome difficulties and become stronger. She expressed her intention to continue her reforms so that Taiwan's economy will not be affected.

Local elections in Taiwan are scheduled for November.
An opinion poll by a Taiwanese broadcaster found that only 26 percent of respondents are satisfied with Tsai's job performance.

Police in northeastern Japan are holding an information-providing session on Sunday to help those whose loved ones remain unaccounted for more than 7 years after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Police in Iwate Prefecture hold such sessions to provide information on 62 disaster victims whose bodies remain unidentified.

At Sunday's session in the city of Kamaishi, police released portraits of the victims and photos of clothes worn by them.

Police say 1,115 people from the prefecture are still missing after the disaster.

They say their information-providing sessions have so far not led to the identification of any bodies. But they hope to continue such sessions so that they can get new information and receive requests concerning areas that should be searched.

A senior police official said they hope to return the bodies to their families as soon as possible through DNA tests and other means.

The next session will be held in the city of Rikuzentakata in July.

Japanese Director Hirokazu Koreeda's "Shoplifters" has won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

At the 71st edition of Cannes, Koreeda's work was one of 2 films by Japanese directors in competition for the Palme d'Or. The other one was "Asako I & II" directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

On the last day on Saturday the head of the jury, Actress Cate Blanchett, announced Koreeda's victory.

It was Koreeda's 5th time to be in competition for the Palme d'Or and his first in 3 years. In 2013, his "Like Father, Like Son" won the jury prize.

"Shoplifters" is about family ties. It's a story of a Tokyo family that lives on the pension benefits of one of its members. They shoplift when they are really hard up.

The last Japanese film to win the top honor at the festival was 21 years ago -- director Shohei Imamura snatched the Palme d'Or in 1997 for his film "The Eel."

Cannes is one of the 3 most prestigious film festivals in the world, the other two being Berlin and Venice.

A Japanese culture center in Brazil is marking its first anniversary after welcoming more than 750 thousand people.

Japan House Sao Paolo opened in April last year to promote Japanese culture, tradition and technology.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs say almost 755 thousand people have visited so far. That's more than 5 times the original target of 136 thousand.

A Japan House will open in London in late June.
Another one partially opened in Los Angeles last December. That facility will be completed by the end of March next year.

The government plans to use the Japan Houses to encourage more people to visit the country.
