Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will start a 4-day visit to Japan on Tuesday for a trilateral summit involving South Korea, as well as bilateral talks with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
This will be Li's first visit to Japan since assuming the post and the first by a Chinese premier since Wen Jiabao came in May 2011.
On Wednesday, Li will attend the 3-way summit to meet Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and also have separate talks with Abe.
On Thursday, Li will meet Emperor Akihito before travelling to Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.
In the summit meetings, China will seek cooperation in dealing with North Korea and trade protectionism.
The joint declaration signed at the inter-Korean summit last month called for talks between the 2 Koreas and the United States -- and possibly China -- in pursuit of a permanent peace framework that would replace the Korean War armistice.
China appears to welcome Japan's involvement in the process.
Beijing also hopes to work closely with Japan to address protectionism amid a deepening trade confrontation with the US administration of President Donald Trump.

Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner will attend a ceremony in Israel on Monday of next week on the relocation of the US embassy to Jerusalem.
The White House announced on Monday that members of the delegation would include the couple as well as Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
The United States is relocating its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem following President Donald Trump's decision last December to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Trump had said earlier that he was considering attending the ceremony.
But he has apparently chosen not to, taking into consideration possible Palestinian repercussions and the upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Palestinians, who see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, are expected to stage protests against the ceremony.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has chosen to retain Dmitry Medvedev as prime minister for his new term.
Putin submitted the proposal for premiership to the lower house of parliament, or State Duma, immediately after he was sworn in for his 4th term on Monday.
Medvedev has held the premiership since 2012 when Putin started his 3rd term as president.
An official close to the presidential office told NHK that there is no need for drastic change in Russia at this time when its economy has been sluggish due to sanctions by Western nations.
NHK's correspondent in Moscow says that Putin apparently chose continuity and stability over a change in government amid growing frustration among people, because of worsening relations with the West and a stagnating economy.
The Duma is expected to approve Medvedev as prime minister on Tuesday.

In Lebanon, the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah and its allies have scored major gains in Sunday's parliamentary elections. Hezbollah has declared victory.
The interior ministry announced on Monday that the Iran-backed Hezbollah and its allies won over half the seats in all but one of the 15 electoral districts.
Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a televised speech that the group's mission is accomplished and called the result a big political victory.
The key challenger, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and his mainly Sunni political allies, backed by Saudi Arabia, lost major ground.
In Lebanon, in order to maintain a balance of power between differing religions and denominations, the prime minister's post is traditionally held by a Sunni Muslim, while the speaker of Parliament is a Shia.
Hariri is therefore expected to remain as prime minister and form a coalition with other groups, including Hezbollah, for a unified government.
As Hezbollah will have a stronger say, Saudi Arabia is expected to become more wary of Iran's expanding influence.
The United States and Israel, which have designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, are on increased alert. Observers say concerns are increasing about rising tension in the region.

Japan and China may begin talks on easing Beijing's import restrictions on food.
Beijing suspended imports of farm products and other food items from 10 prefectures after the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.
Japan and China are expected to reach an agreement on holding working-level talks on the subject when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang meet in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Officials in Japan have repeatedly asked Chinese counterparts to relax the restrictions. The two sides will work out the date and location of the talks later.

Taiwan is likely to miss this year's meeting of the World Health Organization, a situation it blames on pressure from China.
Taiwan had been taking part in the annual World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the WHO, as an observer since 2009. But last year, it did not receive an invitation.
Taiwanese authorities had hoped to take part in this year's forum, which opens in Geneva on May 21st, citing the need to join talks on the prevention of infectious diseases and other health issues.
They sought the cooperation of Japan, the US and other countries, but the registration deadline passed on Monday Geneva time without an invitation from the WHO.
The Taiwanese foreign ministry issued a statement urging the WHO not to ignore Taiwan's decades-long contribution to global health and disease prevention.
It stressed that enjoying good health is the universal right of every human being, without distinction of political belief or other factors.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang criticized Taiwan's ruling party on Monday. He said the refusal of to accept the One China principle undermines the political foundation for Taiwan to attend the World Health Assembly.
He blamed the administration of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen for its failure to receive an invitation.

A Chinese court has handed down a life sentence to a former high-ranking official. Sun Zhengcai was once tipped as a possible leader of the generation to succeed President Xi Jinping.
The former party chief of Chongqing City and ex-Politburo member stood trial for accepting bribes. A probe led to his abrupt fall ahead of the party's National Congress last year.
State-run China Central Television says hearings in a Tianjin court revealed that Sun and his associates accepted cash and goods worth about 170-million yuan, or about 27 million dollars, in exchange for favors and abusing his authority.
The court on Tuesday said Sun should have been a role model, but instead ignored the law and destroyed normal order in duties at the government organizations.
Sun said he admits his crimes and is sincerely repentant.
The Communist Party's disciplinary body had criticized him for plotting a conspiracy.
Observers say the Chinese leadership under Xi used the trial to demonstrate its strict stance against corruption and to urge party members to remain loyal to the president.
