US President Donald Trump says his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is back on for June 12th in Singapore. The focus of the talks will likely be on whether the 2 sides can reach an effective agreement regarding the North's denuclearization.
Trump announced on Friday that the historic summit will happen as initially scheduled. He described the meeting as the start of a process and suggested that more summit talks could follow.
Trump said he would not remove sanctions until North Korea agrees to denuclearization. But he also said he doesn't want to "use the term maximum pressure anymore" as the 2 sides are "getting along."
He said he thinks the summit will ultimately be a very successful process.
The US government has urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner. It says the North should start the process soon and complete it over a short period.
But Pyongyang wants to carry out denuclearization in phases. It also demands that Washington guarantee the survival of the regime and end military threats.
Trump has not made it clear whether there has been any progress in closing the gaps regarding denuclearization.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will cooperate with US President Donald Trump to make the US-North Korea summit an opportunity for progress on resolving issues with North Korea.
Abe made the remarks in a speech in the city of Otsu in western Japan on Saturday.
President Trump earlier announced he will hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12th as initially planned.
Abe said Japan can never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea. He said Tokyo has led the international community with a determination to increase pressure on the North.
Abe also said he will meet Trump in Washington next week.
He pledged to do all he can to make the US-North Korea summit an opportunity for progress on the North's nuclear and missile development, and the abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korean agents.

Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera says he believes it is important to keep pressuring North Korea until it gives up all of its ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction.
Onodera was speaking at a conference on security in the Asia-Pacific region, which opened in Singapore on Friday.
Onodera referred to US President Donald Trump's comment that he does not want to use the term maximum pressure in relation to North Korea anymore.
The minister noted that Trump also said he would not remove sanctions unless North Korea agreed to denuclearize.
Onodera said he hopes the US-North Korea summit will be an opportunity to take a step toward Pyongyang abandoning all of its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, and resolving the issue of the abductions of Japanese nationals.
But he said Pyongyang should not be rewarded for simply agreeing to a dialogue. He said the only way to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula is for the North to take concrete action.

The European Union says it plans to slap tariffs on 2.8 billion euros' worth of American products. The move comes in retaliation for US levies on metal imports.
EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom announced the measure at a news conference on Friday.
She said the EU plans to impose the tariffs as early as June 20th, in line with World Trade Organization rules.
The move comes after the Trump administration decided to slap high tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico, starting on Friday. The US had been exempting the 3 parties from the levies put into place in March.
Malmstrom criticized the US move, saying it amounts to "pure protectionism" and weakens relations between Europe and the US.
The commissioner said the EU will begin procedures to challenge the US measure at the WTO.
Under WTO rules, the EU and the US will hold bilateral discussions first, and if the talks fail, the body would examine the issue as a dispute settlement case.
Malmstrom said the EU has no intention to escalate the situation but that the bloc could not stay silent.
She added that the door for dialogue is always open to the US.

Canada has challenged the United States at the World Trade Organization over US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Officials requested WTO consultations with the United States.
In a statement on Friday, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the tariffs were imposed under the false pretext of safeguarding US national security.
She said the levies are inconsistent with US international trade obligations and WTO rules.
Freeland said Canada will closely collaborate with the European Union, which also filed a WTO challenge, as well as other countries.
If the matter is not resolved through consultations, a WTO dispute settlement panel will be installed.
In response to the US tariffs, Canada has already announced it would impose 10 to 25 percent tariffs on a wide range of US goods starting July 1st, including yogurt, orange juice, chocolates and metal products.

Hefty US tariffs on metal imports are at the center of discussions by Group of 7 finance ministers and central bank governors.
The finance chiefs met in Whistler, Canada, on Friday.
Their gathering comes on the heels of an announcement by the administration of President Donald Trump that it will apply the tariffs to steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada, and Mexico.
All 3 were initially exempted from the levies, which went into effect in March.
Speaking to reporters after the first day of the two-day talks, Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso described the US decision as extremely regrettable. He noted that the US administration is also looking at targeting automobile imports.
Aso said that such unilateral and protectionist trade measures do not benefit any country.
The EU has gone to the World Trade Organization to challenge the US measure.
Aso said Japan has not made a final decision, but is also preparing for action at the WTO.

Supporters of Cambodia's largest opposition party are calling on the Japanese government to stop its support for a general election in July.
About 100 people supporting the Cambodia National Rescue Party, or CNRP, rallied in New York on Friday in protest against the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Many senior CNRP members have fled abroad after a Cambodian court ordered the party to disband last November.
They say their attempts to register their candidacy for the election from overseas were rejected.
Holding a banner reading "Cambodia's democracy is a fake," the demonstrators shouted that Japan should end its support for the authoritarian government.
The protesters marched on the Japanese Mission to the United Nations and submitted a petition demanding Japan withdraw its aid for the election.
A daughter of the jailed CNRP leader Kem Sokha said she wants Japan to help restore freedom of expression in Cambodia.
The United States and the European Union have already halted their support for the Cambodian vote. Japan, China, Russia and South Korea continue to provide aid.

People in northeastern Japan have kicked off an event in Iwate Prefecture's Morioka City meant to unite the summer festivals of 6 prefectures hard hit by the March 2011 disaster in the region.
The 2-day event, called the Tohoku Kizuna festival, began on Saturday. It's a successor to the Tohoku Rokkon Festival that began in 2011 to help rebuild affected areas. Each prefecture took turns hosting the event.
Festivals and dance events were held at the Morioka Castle site park, the festival's main venue.
They included performances by Sendai Suzume Odori dancers from Miyagi Prefecture and crew members from the Aomori Nebuta Festival, known for its giant paper floats.
A woman in her 30s from Morioka said she came to show the Nebuta festival to her child, adding it's great that the disaster-hit communities in the region are joining hands.
