Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the Group of 7 Summit was a success and the leaders of the industrialized nations have issued a joint communique.

The 2-day summit at a resort in Charlevoix in Quebec, Canada, ended on Saturday.

There were concerns that differences would widen between the US and the 6 other countries over trade and the Iran nuclear deal.

But at the closing news conference, Trudeau said that the leaders had spoken candidly about a wide range of issues.

He noted that they had also agreed to provide funds for the education of women and children in conflict areas.

The prime minister reiterated that Canada is ready to retaliate against the heavy steel tariffs recently imposed by the United States.

US President Donald Trump strongly criticized Trudeau on Twitter, adding that he has instructed US representatives not to endorse the communique as he looks at tariffs on automobiles flooding the US market.

Police in Japan have arrested a man suspected of killing one man with a bladed weapon and slashing 2 other people aboard a Shinkansen bullet train running near Tokyo.

The 22-year-old suspect was taken into custody when the train pulled in to a station.

An NHK reporter who was on board said that at around 10 PM on Saturday, several passengers came running up from the back of the train.

She said they told her someone with a blade was in a rear car and she also moved toward the front.

A man who saw the suspect said he was taken away in handcuffs by around a dozen police officers.

A security expert has said rail companies should review their security measures, following a deadly stabbing on a Shinkansen bullet train near Tokyo on Saturday.

Kansai University Professor Seiji Abe says it is difficult to carry out baggage checks, citing the large number of passengers in major stations such as Tokyo Station.

But he said that if explosives or other hazardous items are brought onto a fast-traveling bullet train, it could lead to an incident with many casualties.

Abe said rail companies should work to develop technologies, such as sensors that screen passengers' belongings.

Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro will become Sir Kazuo after he was named in the British monarch's birthday honors list.

The British government published a list on Friday, naming key figures from the world of sport, entertainment, literature, business and other fields. Ishiguro is being recognized for his service to literature.

The Japanese-born British author says he was deeply touched to receive the honor from the nation that welcomed him as a small foreign boy.

He said he is proud of Britain, its open, democratic traditions and literary culture.

Ishiguro's father was an oceanographer who moved his family to Britain for work when Kazuo was 5 years old.

Ishiguro released his debut novel in 1982, and went on to become one of Britain's leading writers.
