US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to make the upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a success.

Trump told reporters in the White House on Tuesday about the first-ever summit between sitting US and North Korean leaders scheduled for next Tuesday in Singapore.

He said a lot of relationships are being built and a lot of negotiations are going on even before the trip, suggesting that preparations are going ahead smoothly.

He also said, "We'll see what happens, but it will be a very important couple of days."

Earlier, the White House announced that the summit will be held at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island.

Sentosa was seen as one of the candidate sites because its location gives it an advantage in terms of security.

Attention is now focused on where the 2 leaders will stay.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said on Tuesday that the US administration will not pay for the accommodations and other costs related to the summit, of the North Korean delegates.

Eyes are on how the North's delegation would deal with the high costs for the accommodations as the country is believed to suffer from a shortage of foreign currencies.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has left for the United States for talks with President Donald Trump ahead of the first-ever US-North Korea summit next week.

Abe will meet with Trump at the White House on Thursday. The US president and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are scheduled to hold a summit in Singapore next Tuesday.

Abe told reporters before leaving Tokyo on Wednesday that he has been working closely with Trump on issues concerning North Korea. He said their stances are entirely in agreement.

Abe said he wants to coordinate policies with Trump on the issues of the North's missile and nuclear development, as well as its abduction of Japanese nationals, to ensure that the US-North Korea summit is a success.

He called the abduction issue one of the most important items on Japan's agenda.

After meeting Trump, Abe will visit Canada to attend the annual Group of 7 summit conference opening on Friday.

Abe said he wants to help arrange for the G7 leaders to release a message expressing their support for the US president regarding his summit talks with Kim.

He spoke out against retaliatory tariffs, saying that no country will benefit from them. Abe said he would urge the G7 to fulfill its role as a stabilizer of the world economy.

A former senior US official who was in charge of North Korean matters has expressed his views about the upcoming US-North Korea summit. He pointed out that the talks should focus first on ways to denuclearize the North and avoid taking up the issue of Japanese abducted by the North and other matters at this time.

Joseph Yun spoke at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Tuesday. He served as the State Department's special representative for North Korea policy until March.

Yun stressed that the talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un should concentrate on the denuclearization of North Korea.

He said he believed it would be a mistake to overload the summit's agenda with other items, such as North Korea's human rights situation, the abductions of Japanese nationals, and biological and chemical weapons.

On the other hand, Yun explained that Japan has played an important role, such as by providing economic aid to the North under past agreements with Pyongyang. He expressed hope that Japan will boost its cooperation with the United States when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe holds talks with Trump this week.

Yun noted it is unknown whether North Korea will really move toward denuclearization. He said the first crucial step for it is to open up about all of its nuclear development programs, suggesting that such a declaration would be a test of the country's seriousness.

Iran says it has begun preparations to boost its uranium enrichment capacity. The move is seen as an attempt to pressure the remaining signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal after the US withdrawal.

The head of the country's nuclear agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, told reporters on Tuesday that President Hassan Rouhani had issued an order to begin the work.

Salehi said Iran has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency about the move. He said preparations are underway to build new centrifuges that would increase the production capacity for a key ingredient of enriched uranium.

Salehi said that Iran is acting within the framework of the nuclear accord it signed with 6 world powers.

But he also warned that if the deal collapsed, the production capacity for enriched uranium would surge.

Iran has been negotiating with France, Germany and Britain to save the agreement since the United States announced its decision to leave last month.

The focus of the negotiations is to ensure Iran's economic interests after the US reintroduced sanctions against the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced Iran's decision to increase its uranium enrichment activities.

He tweeted on Tuesday that Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared 2 days ago that he intended to destroy the state of Israel.

Netanyahu strongly criticized Iran, saying the unrestricted enrichment of uranium would produce an arsenal of nuclear bombs.

He added that Israel is not surprised, and it will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons.

A US media outlet is reporting that China has put a new offer on the table in trade negotiations with the United States. The Wall Street Journal says Beijing has offered to buy nearly 70 billion dollars' worth of American goods. In exchange, it wants Washington to drop plans for steep tariffs on Chinese imports.

The offer reportedly came as US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross met over the weekend with China's Vice Premier Liu He in Beijing.

The Wall Street Journal says China's proposal applied to farm and energy products. Beijing argues that it is significant progress toward the US goal of slashing the trade deficit with China by 200 billion dollars.

Beijing says the proposal would be shelved if Washington sticks with its plan to impose tariffs on 50 billion dollars' worth of Chinese goods.

The US says the levies are in retaliation for violations of intellectual property rights.

Authorities in Guatemala say they've confirmed that at least 75 people have died following a massive volcanic eruption on Sunday. They warned that the number of victims could rise.

The eruption of the 3,700-meter Fuego volcano sent smoke as high as 10,000 meters into the air and covered the surrounding area in ash.

Authorities say the number of missing has jumped to 192.

The volcano remained active on Tuesday. Aerial footage shows that an extensive area around it is covered in ash.

Rescuers and military personnel continue to assist the stranded and search for the missing. But their efforts are hampered by the massive amounts of ash.

The father of an 18-year-old missing woman said he came to the site to help the rescue effort. He said he fears she's dead but still has hopes of finding her.

The UN General Assembly has elected Ecuador's foreign minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, as its next president.

UN member states voted on Tuesday. The 73rd General Assembly session opens in September.

Espinosa was chosen by a wide margin over Honduras' UN ambassador.

In her post-election speech, Espinosa stressed that multilateralism is an obligation, not an option, in an apparent jab at the unilateral policies of US President Donald Trump.

She also dedicated her election to all the women in the world who participate in politics and those who are victims of violence.

Espinosa expressed high hopes for the US-North Korea summit planned for next Tuesday.

She said denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is something extremely positive not only to create a safer Korean Peninsula but for all of humanity.

UN diplomatic sources attribute the Ecuadorean candidate's overwhelming victory to widespread skepticism of Honduras' stance regarding its embassy in Israel. The country has announced it will relocate the embassy to Jerusalem, following the American lead.

Japan's Honda Motor says it will start selling its small business jet in the country.

Honda made the announcement on Wednesday.

The firm hopes to start delivering the 7-seater HondaJet in the first half of next year after approval by Japan's government.

The plane costs about 570 million yen, or roughly 5.2 million dollars.

The HondaJet has already been sold mainly in the United States and Europe, where demand for jets has been increasing among business owners.

Last year, Honda delivered 43 of the aircraft -- twice the figure for the previous year -- putting the plane in first place among small business jets.

Japan's business jet market is small, with only about 90 planes in operation. About 13,000 operate in the United States.

Honda Aircraft Company President Michimasa Fujino says he sees potential demand in Japan too, and wants to establish a new means of transportation allowing smooth transport to every city in the country.
