US President Donald Trump's new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports have driven a wedge between Washington and the other members of the Group of 7.

G7 finance ministers and central bank chiefs wrapped up meetings in Whistler, Canada, by expressing strong concern that the tariffs could threaten free trade.

Canada issued a chair's summary statement urging US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to convey their "unanimous concern and disappointment" to Trump.

The summary says discussions should continue at the G7 leaders' summit beginning on Friday in Quebec, Canada.

The Trump administration announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico on Friday. Similar US levies are already in place for imports from China, Japan and other countries.

Canada and the EU have decided on retaliatory actions against the US and have filed challenges with the World Trade Organization.

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso says 6 of the G7 members are united in criticizing the US for imposing punitive tariffs in violation of World Trade Organization rules.

Aso said on Saturday that the US delegation was unable to counter the other members' arguments, adding that it's rare for the members to unite against the US.

Reporters asked whether the dispute over tariffs can be resolved at the G7 summit that will start on Friday.

Aso replied that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has the closest ties with US President Donald Trump among the G7 leaders, and he thinks that Abe will be able to persuade Trump to change his stance on this issue.

The defense chiefs of Japan, the United States and South Korea have confirmed their countries will cooperate closely to support the summit between the US and North Korea.

Itsunori Onodera, Jim Mattis and Song Young-moo met on Sunday in Singapore on the sidelines of the Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue.

Onodera said Japan's goal is to get North Korea to abandon all of its weapons of mass destruction and all ballistic missiles with any range in a complete and verifiable manner. He stressed the importance of international cooperation to get the North to change its policies.

Mattis warned negotiations with North Korea will be a "bumpy road" and said the country will receive relief only when it demonstrates verifiable and irreversible steps to denuclearization. He also said maintaining defense cooperation between the US, Japan and South Korea will help their diplomats negotiate from a position of strength.

Song said he hopes the 3 countries will work together to get North Korea to completely denuclearize without veering from the path it has begun to take. He said some of its recent actions suggest a bright future. He added that it's time to seize this opportunity.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are scheduled to meet in Singapore on June 12th.

A US newspaper says a decision has not been made about who will pay for the North Korean delegation's travel accommodations during the first-ever summit with the US in Singapore.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12th, as initially planned.

The Washington Post has reported that cash-strapped North Korea cannot afford to foot the bill for rooms at the 5-star luxury hotel that it would like to use. The paper says one presidential suite at the hotel costs more than 6,000 dollars per night.

The paper quoted sources as saying that the US is open to covering the costs, but is concerned that Pyongyang could view such an action as an insult.

The paper also quoted a former US Treasury Department official as saying that payments for North Korea's accommodations could run afoul of US sanctions.

For that reason, the paper says US planners may ask Singapore to pay the bills.

Japan's National Tax Agency will introduce anti-counterfeit revenue stamps next month. It will be the first design change in 25 years.

Individuals, companies and other entities have to buy the stamps to make contracts and other types of documents legally effective. About 300 million stamps are issued annually.

But a large number of counterfeits have been found over the past several years. In 2015, around 85,000 fake stamps were swapped for real ones at post offices across the nation.

To prevent counterfeiting, the tax agency decided to introduce new designs for 19 out of 31 stamp denominations next month.

One new feature will allow people to see holographic images of cherry blossoms and the Chinese characters for Japan.

Another feature will involve special ink showing the word "NIPPON", when it is illuminated by black light.

The tax agency says its current forgery-proof techniques are obsolete. It says the revamped designs will stop the circulation of counterfeit stamps.

Hundreds of runners have carried small bells to scare away bears during a marathon on a small island in northern Japan.

About 600 people took part in the 54-kilometer race on Sunday on Rishiri Island off the northern coast of Hokkaido.

Brown bears are not supposed to exist on the island, but residents found footprints and dung last week. Officials say a bear may have come to Rishiri by swimming across the sea.

The organizer says no bears were spotted during the marathon. A local official said he is relieved that the event ended without incident, and the authorities will stay on the alert ahead of the peak tourism season.

A runner said the bell apparently worked and she was able to finish the race without bumping into a bear.

She also said she enjoyed the view of the mountains and the ocean.
