Global leaders ended the first day of the G20 summit in Argentina on Friday, discussing issues such as the world economy, trade and climate change.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the meeting that heightened trade tensions pose a serious risk to the global economy. The remark came amid the escalating trade dispute between the United States and China.

Abe said free and open economies are the basis of peace and prosperity, and that protectionism and trade sanctions will not be in the interests of any country.

Abe emphasized that as the standard-bearer of free trade, Japan intends to strengthen and improve multilateral trade systems based on rules. He said Japan will also promote economic partnership agreements.
The leaders of some countries expressed concern about tense trade relations. Others said they want to reaffirm their support for a free trade system.

With China in mind, Abe noted that countries should make a united effort to abolish subsidies for state-owned companies that obstruct fair competition. He added that excessive production of steel products should be scaled back.

Abe pointed out the significance of solidly implementing the Paris Agreement to address climate change.

The global leaders are also reported to have exchanged views on the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the rising tension between Russia and Ukraine.

The G20 summit is scheduled to continue through Saturday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met on Friday with China's President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Argentina. Abe expressed hope that Xi will have a fruitful meeting with President Donald Trump. Abe said China needs to deal with US concerns over issues including China's subsidies to state-owned companies.

At the beginning of their meeting, Xi said he and Abe held many views in common after their candid exchange of opinions when Abe visited China earlier this year.

Xi said he has confidence in the future of China-Japan ties and added that he wishes to jointly exercise political leadership with Abe to put new energy into the relationship.

Abe said he wants to invite Xi to Japan next year, and promote exchanges and cooperation in every field through constant visits by the leaders to each other's country.

He added that he hopes Xi and US President Donald Trump will have meaningful talks on issues including trade and investments and that the 2 countries will contribute to the dialogue of the G20 summit as a whole.

Abe at the same time noted that China needs to take concrete steps to address US concerns, including such issues as subsidies for state-owned companies, protection of intellectual property, and the forced transfer of technologies from private companies.

Abe also referred to the 2 countries' plan to cooperate in infrastructure building for other countries. He said joint projects need to follow international standards with transparency and openness.

The 2 leaders agreed to communicate more closely.

During the meeting, Abe welcomed China's lifting of import restrictions on rice produced in Niigata Prefecture, neighboring Fukushima Prefecture. China put restrictions on food imports from some prefectures following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. When Abe asked Xi to lift other bans, Xi responded that China will consider the issue based on scientific evaluation.

The leaders also agreed on the need for stability in the East China Sea and to realize steady ties between the 2 countries in the region.

On North Korea, both leaders supported full implementation of UN Security Council sanctions resolutions. Abe and Xi agreed on the importance of countermeasures against North Korean offshore ship-to-ship goods transfers, which violate UN sanctions.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump have reaffirmed that they will work together to urge China to play a constructive role in the fields of economy and security.

The 2 leaders met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina on Friday.

Trump said, "Japan is buying large amounts of our fighter jets, F-35s and others, and we appreciate it very much. But they are really working with me on trying to balance our deficit, because we do have a deficit that's pretty substantial with Japan. We hope that we are going to be balancing it very quickly."

Trump also said he was honored to be invited to Japan for the Imperial succession next year.

Abe said, "The alliance between Japan and the United States has become more robust than ever."

The 2 leaders agreed on the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council resolutions to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. They also reaffirmed that they will cooperate to deal with North Korea's offshore ship-to-ship transfers of goods, which violate UN sanctions.

They confirmed that they will further expand trade and investment between Japan and the US, as stated in their joint statement in September.

They also reaffirmed that they will work toward realizing economic development in "a free and open Indo-Pacific" region.

Abe and Trump later had their first trilateral summit with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They reaffirmed close cooperation to strengthen the free and open Indo-Pacific initiative to guarantee the rule of law and freedom of navigation.

People have staged a rally near the venue of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to protest US President Donald Trump's policies on illegal immigration, trade and other issues.

Demonstrators marched about 2 kilometers on Friday, carrying banners and placards that called on Trump to leave the country.

A 38-year-old participant accused Trump of disregarding women and treating immigrants coldly. The woman said she wants him to leave Argentina immediately.

The demonstration was estimated to number several thousand people. It was joined by people opposing the summit itself. They said such a conference helps widen the wealth gap.

Local media say authorities detained 17 people for possessing weapons including hammers.

Police are stepping up their alert level for the summit as the protesters plan more anti-Trump rallies.

The South Korean military says a North Korean soldier has defected over the military demarcation line in the northern province of Gangwon.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff says the soldier was spotted moving across the demilitarized zone on the South Korean side before 8 AM on Saturday. The soldier was reportedly taken into custody.

The military plans to question the defector together with officials from the intelligence service and the unification ministry.

The defection occurred after North and South Korea each removed 10 guard posts in the demilitarized zone on a trial basis.

In September, the leaders of the 2 Koreas agreed to withdraw all guard posts in a deal aimed at easing military tensions.
