Indonesian authorities say at least 168 people have been confirmed dead in the tsunami that hit coastal areas of Java and Sumatra on Saturday night. The disaster management authorities suspect an eruption of the Krakatoa volcano 30 minutes before could have triggered the tsunami.

The giant waves struck at around 9:30 PM in areas of the Sunda Strait between the densely populated islands of Java and Sumatra.

Authorities say at least 30 people remain missing on the two islands and 745 are injured.

The authorities suspect the tsunami was triggered by landslides and other geological activities caused by Krakatoa's eruption.

The authorities posted footage on Twitter of cars that were washed away by the tsunami.

Tohoku University Professor Fumihiko Imamura referred back to the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, which caused a tsunami that killed more than 30,000 people on neighboring islands.

He says eruption-triggered landslides on the seabed and flows of volcanic rock and ash into the ocean sometimes cause the waves.

Imamura says, unlike tsunami caused by earthquakes, those caused by volcanic activity are hard to predict and may reach the shore before there's time to issue an alert.

He says people living in coastal areas should remain on high alert if the volcanic activity continues.

Former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn has reportedly denied the new allegations leveled against him. One concerns the transfer of nearly 14 million dollars from a Nissan subsidiary to a company run by his Saudi Arabian acquaintance.

Ghosn was rearrested Friday on suspicion of aggravated breach of trust. He is accused of making Nissan shoulder personal investment losses that he incurred during the 2008 global financial crisis.

Tokyo prosecutors also suspect Ghosn transferred 14 million dollars to a Saudi friend's firm, after the individual helped him obtain a credit guarantee.

According to Ghosn's lawyer, the former chairman says the Saudi individual is a wealthy and well-known figure, who had previously helped solve problems that Nissan had in Saudi Arabia.

Ghosn reportedly claims his Saudi acquaintance is close to the royal family and has also worked as a lobbyist for Nissan.

The former chairman is reported to have said that the money the Saudi man received was a justifiable remuneration from Nissan.

Ghosn says his actions do not constitute a breach of trust.
But, Tokyo prosecutors suspect Ghosn misused Nissan's assets, by inappropriately giving his acquaintance company funds in return for a credit guarantee.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono says Japan wants South Korea to appropriately handle the incident of a destroyer locking its fire-control radar on a Japanese patrol plane over the Sea of Japan.

The incident involving a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force P-1 aircraft occurred off the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on Thursday.

The Japanese government lodged a protest with the South Korean authorities, saying it was an extremely dangerous act that could have resulted in an unexpected contingency.

Kono cited a series of recent incidents, including a visit by South Korean politicians to the disputed Takeshima Islands in the Sea of Japan and the drills carried out by the South Korean military on the islands. South Korea controls the islands. Japan claims them.

He called on South Korea to take consistent actions at a time when Seoul is tackling the difficult issue of a South Korean court's ruling on wartime labor. The ruling has contributed to a deterioration of ties between the 2 countries.

Kono said the South Korean side should also make efforts to manage the bilateral relationship, and he has instructed senior foreign ministry officials to discuss these issues when they meet their counterparts in Seoul on Monday.

South Korea says the destroyer was using the radar to search for a North Korean ship in distress. Kono said Japan's Defense Ministry will deal with the technical issues.
