North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly overseen a drill involving large-caliber long-range rocket launchers and tactical guided weapons.

State-run media said on Sunday the purpose was to estimate and check the operating ability of the weapons.

They broadcast and published photographs of Kim watching the drill.

One photo shows a projectile shot from a mobile launcher.

Other pictures show a projectile hitting a rock. That could be a purported tactical guided weapon.

Some other photos show what appear to be multiple-rocket launchers.

Kim reportedly urged troops to bear in mind that genuine peace and security are guaranteed only by "powerful strength."

The media said he stressed the need for all service members to defend the country's "political sovereignty and economic self-sustenance."

The reports say Kim gave high marks to the troops, saying they are capable of quickly responding to any situation.

The South Korean military earlier said the North launched several short-range projectiles Saturday morning from an area near the east coast city of Wonsan.

South Korean media quoted an expert as saying the projectile fired from the mobile launcher looked like a Russian surface-to-surface ballistic missile.

Observers say a ballistic missile launch by the North could violate UN Security Council resolutions.

The South Korean military is trying to determine what weapons were used in the drill.

US President Donald Trump remains optimistic about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following Pyongyang's launch of several short-range projectiles on Saturday. South Korea's military says the projectiles were fired from Wonsan on the eastern side of North Korea.

Trump tweeted later in the day that Kim Jong Un knows that he is with Kim and does not want to break a promise to him.

Trump is apparently referring to Kim's promise not to test-fire missiles or to conduct nuclear tests.

The president also tweeted that he believes that Kim Jong Un fully realizes the great economic potential of North Korea, and will do nothing to interfere or end it.
The tweet indicates Trump's renewed conviction that North Korea will denuclearize in return for economic support.

The Trump administration is exploring ways to resume denuclearization talks to make way for a third summit with Kim.

There is no prospect of talks restarting while the US maintains its position of keeping sanctions on Pyongyang without complete denuclearization.

On Tuesday, a senior North Korean diplomat warned of "undesired consequences" for Washington if it does not change its position by the end of this year.

Fighting between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas has killed civilians on both sides. There is concern the violence may worsen.

Hamas, which effectively controls the Gaza Strip, fired rockets into Israel on Saturday. The group says the attacks were in retaliation for the killing of four Palestinian protesters by the Israeli military.

Hamas has fired more than 400 rockets, with one hitting a house and killing a 58-year-old man in Ashkelon, southern Israel.

The Israeli military says it has carried out airstrikes against 200 Hamas military facilities.

A hospital in Gaza says three residents were killed, including a one-year-old baby and her mother, who was six months pregnant.

Three Hamas fighters have also been killed.

The Israeli military blames the deaths of the baby and the mother on a failed rocket launch by Hamas.

A building in Gaza that housed the office for the Turkish state-run news agency was destroyed during the Israeli airstrikes. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned what he called Israeli terrorism.

US transport authorities say they are looking at if the weather played a role in causing a passenger plane to overrun the runway in Florida.

The Boeing 737 aircraft carrying more than 140 people slid into a river on Friday night while attempting to land at a naval air station in Jacksonville. The plane was operated by US charter airline Miami Air International.

US Navy officials say some people suffered injuries such as bruises. They say the passengers included service personnel and their families.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators said at a news conference on Saturday that they are very closely looking at the weather at the time of the incident. They said there were some reports of heavy rain.

The officials said the pavement is not grooved to allow rain water to flow off the runway faster, adding that they don't know yet if that is a factor.

The NTSB is set to analyze the data from plane's flight data recorder that it has recovered.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono has pledged the government will support South Sudan in its efforts to forge peace in the war-torn country. He is Japan's first top diplomat to visit the nation.

Kono made the remarks when he met President Salva Kiir on Saturday. He said Japan will support the peace process between government and rebel forces.

Under the deal the warring sides reached in September, they were due to form a unity government by mid-May. But they postponed the plan by six months, citing security concerns. The peace process hangs in the balance.

Kono proposed to Kiir assistance worth over 2.7 million dollars for restoring university buildings destroyed by years of fighting and for human resource development.

He also told Kiir that Japan plans to increase its grant aid for expanding a bridge over the Nile at its border to about 100 million dollars.

At a joint news conference, Kono said Japan wants to fulfill its own roles and responsibility for promoting development and peace in South Sudan.

Earlier on Saturday, Kono greeted four members of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force who have been working at the UN peacekeeping command in the country.

A Japanese atomic bomb survivor has spoken of the devastation of the bombing and has called for cooperative efforts to abolish nuclear arms.

Sueichi Kido spoke at a meeting in New York that was attended by more than 100 members of non-governmental organizations from various countries.

He was 5 years old when the nuclear bomb exploded above Nagasaki in 1945.

Kido talked about how he suffered burns on his face and how the bomb devastated the city.

He said that more than 9.4 million people have signed a petition calling on all countries to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

A US participant expressed concern over the planned withdrawal by the US and Russia from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, as well as North Korea's nuclear program.

A Japanese expert has given a presentation on new findings about treasures from King Tutankhamun's tomb at an international conference in Egypt.

Professor Nozomu Kawai of Kanazawa University lectured about a gold gilt chariot at the conference held on Saturday near Cairo.

Kawai said that a record written in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and the location of parts of the chariot show that the vehicle was used in combination with a canopy that was found in the same place.

He said that the chariot was likely used by the king and queen at ceremonies.

The Grand Egyptian Museum is being built with support from Japan, near the Giza Pyramids and will exhibit 50,000 artifacts.

The King Tutankhamun exhibits will form the main part of the displays. Restoration and preservation work of artifacts is underway.

Professor Kawai says he wants to use 3D technology provided by Japan to enhance displays by showing the burial accessories in their original state.

The museum is scheduled to open next year.
