Agricultural ministers from the Group of 20 economies concluded two days of talks in Niigata, central Japan, on Sunday and adopted a joint declaration.

The meeting was the first in a series of G20 ministerial conferences to take place in Japan, leading up to the G20 summit in Osaka in June.

The statement calls on G20 members to play a leading role in using artificial intelligence and other technologies to improve productivity in farming amid global population growth. It also urges them to make efforts to reduce food waste.

Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Takamori Yoshikawa chaired the meeting. He said after the talks that it was significant that the participants confirmed the importance of sharing knowledge.

Yoshikawa also said that the participants gave high marks to food prepared with ingredients from areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Before Sunday's session, Yoshikawa met with his Chinese counterpart Han Changfu and called on Beijing to lift its import restrictions on Japanese food that were imposed following the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Chinese delegates reportedly showed understanding of the importance Japan places on getting import restrictions lifted, but the talks made no major progress.

US President Donald Trump has told China that now is the time to act to make a trade deal with the United States.

He tweeted on Saturday that the deal would become far worse for China if it has to be negotiated during his second term in office.

The Trump administration has raised tariffs from 10 to 25 percent on 200 billion dollars' worth of imports from China. Last week, negotiators from the two countries failed to narrow their differences in talks in Washington.

The Trump administration also announced it has begun procedures to increase tariffs on all remaining Chinese imports -- worth about 300 billion dollars -- as Beijing is set to take retaliatory measures.

Trump is taking a tougher stance on China, against the backdrop of steady increases in US economic figures and stock prices.

Disagreement between nuclear and non-nuclear countries has prevented the meeting of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or NPT, from adopting a consensus document.

About 190 member states took part in the preparatory session for the 2020 review conference of the treaty which was held over two weeks at UN headquarters in New York. It ended on Friday.

The UN holds a review conference every five years.

The United States and Russia engaged in mutual criticisms and nuclear and non-nuclear states remained split on how the disarmament process should advance.

Ambassador Rafael Grossi of Argentina, who is president-designate of the 2020 meeting, acknowledged the differences among the members.

But he told NHK in an interview that all countries are trying to avoid a failure at next year's conference and that could help draw out political willingness for consensus building.

A Japanese-style technical college has opened on a university campus in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The school will provide five years of practical study under a curriculum arranged by Japan's National Institute of Technology, or NIT.

NIT President Isao Taniguchi said in a speech at the opening ceremony that he hopes the students will become creative engineers who can compete on a global level.

A 15-year-old student said they want to become good engineers who can make a contribution to society.

Only one out of 10 applicants were admitted to the first-year class of 24 students.

The students do not have to pay tuition and can apply for scholarships to cover other expenses. Eight of the instructors are from Japan.

The students will also take Japanese-language courses.

Japanese companies that operate in the Bangkok area are hoping to employ some of the graduates.

NIT also helped to set up a technical college in Mongolia, and is planning more overseas projects.

Abdul Hakim Sani Brown has become the second Japanese runner to break the 10-second barrier in the men's 100-meter sprint.

He competed in the South East Conference Championship of US colleges in Arkansas on Saturday.

The 20-year-old came in first in the final race, with a time of 9.99 seconds.

He is now qualified to take part in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

His performance fell short of Japan's national record of 9.98 seconds, which was set by Yohsihide Kiryu in September 2017.

Sani Brown told reporters he was focused during the race and gave it everything he had. He said he was confident that he could break the 10-second barrier.

Sani Brown said he got off to a smooth start, and thought that in the last 20 meters of the race he could improve his time if he pushed himself a bit more.

Sani Brown was born to a Ghanaian father and a Japanese mother.

In 2015, at the age of 16, he won gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters at the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF, World Youth Championships.

He broke the 200-meter championship record then held by Usain Bolt.

He won the IAAF's Rising Star Award in 2015.

Sani Brown could not compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games due to an injury. In 2017, he became the youngest finalist in the 200-meter sprint at the world championships.

He is currently enrolled at the University of Florida.

The Angels beat the Tigers 13 to 0.

A competition of traditional Japanese "yabusame" horseback archery was held on Sunday in the city of Sagae in northeastern Japan's Yamagata Prefecture.

Yabusame has long been held as a ritual at a Shinto shrine in Sagae. A group of local people launched the competition as a sports event in 2016 to popularize it.

24 archers from various parts of Japan took part in the event, which was held on a riverbank.

Wearing samurai costumes, they shot arrows at three targets while riding their horses along a 180-meter course. Their score was based on the number of targets they hit and how long it took them to reach the finish line.

Spectators cheered when arrows hit the targets.

Tourists gathered at the Nagara River in central Japan on Saturday to witness the season's opening of traditional fishing using trained waterfowl.

Fishermen in the city of Gifu use cormorants to catch sweetfish in a tradition dating back more than 1,300 years.

On Saturday night, fishing masters in traditional attire boarded their torch-lit boats. They skillfully guided the birds on rope leashes to catch fish.

At the climax of the event, six boats lined up side-by-side and hauled in fish by driving them into the shallows.

Spectators who viewed the performance from boats applauded and took photos.

A 76-year-old man said the performance at the climax was especially good. He said he hopes the river will not swell this year so that cormorant fishing will go well.

Last year, 76,000 tourists viewed the fishing from boats. The number was down 30 percent from the level of earlier years due to a record rainfall in July.

Cormorant fishing on the Nagara River will continue through October 15th. City officials expect the event to draw 115,000 visitors during the season.
