A global stock sell-off hit shares in Tokyo on the first trading day after a 10-day holiday in Japan. Markets shed value after US President Donald Trump threatened higher tariffs on Chinese imports. That helped send the Nikkei Average below the key 22,000 level for the first time in about a month.

The Nikkei 225 ended Tuesday at 21,923. That's 335 points or 1.5 percent lower than the day before the break. Companies with exposure to China lost ground, including construction machinery makers.

The global plunge started after Trump tweeted Sunday he would hike tariffs on 200 billion dollars-worth of Chinese goods this Friday. He said he would increase them from the current 10 percent to 25 percent.

US media reported that trade representative Robert Lighthizer backed up the threat.

The US and China are set to sit down for the next round of trade talks in Washington this week. Some media outlets reported that Beijing is prepared to temporarily halt the talks, which has added to investor worries.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Monday about their responses to the recent launches of projectiles by North Korea.

Abe later told reporters that the two leaders discussed North Korea in general, and specifically the projectiles launched by the country on Saturday.

He said Japanese and US experts will work together to determine what the North fired.

Abe noted that President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed at their summit last year to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Abe also said he and Trump believe that the US-North Korea agreement should be swiftly implemented.

Abe added that he would like to arrange a meeting with the North Korean leader, without preconditions, as part of efforts to resolve the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by the North.

Meanwhile, Trump said in a tweet that he and Abe talked about North Korea and trade. The US president described the conversation as "very good."

Japan's top government spokesperson has sought to clarify Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's remarks that he aims to meet North Korea's leader "without preconditions."

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga spoke to reporters on Tuesday, a day after Abe said he hopes to arrange talks with Kim Jong Un in order to resolve the issue of North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals.

Suga said Abe has long expressed his resolve to face Kim directly, in order to break the shell of mutual distrust and resolve the North's nuclear, missile and abduction issues.

He said Abe's latest remarks express his determination in a more clear-cut manner.

Suga said Japan needs to take the initiative in tackling the abduction issue. He added the government hopes to take bold action, without missing any possible opportunities for progress, as the abductees' relatives in Japan are growing old.

Suga also stressed that the government's policy on North Korea has not changed. He said Japan aims to comprehensively resolve the abductions, nuclear and missile issues, settle the past and normalize ties with North Korea, in line with the 2002 Pyongyang Declaration.

The declaration was signed at a bilateral summit held in the North Korean capital. Five Japanese abductees returned to Japan one month later.

Japan's government officially recognizes 17 abductees, including these five. The other 12 remain unaccounted for.

South Korea's military says it is still analyzing whether projectiles recently fired by North Korea included ballistic missiles.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff revealed on Tuesday that North Korea fired from 10 to more than 20 projectiles between 9:06 a.m. and 10:55 a.m. on Saturday. It said some reached altitudes of about 60 kilometers.

Asked whether the projectiles included ballistic missiles possibly in violation of UN Security Council resolutions, the JCS said only that it was analyzing information with its US counterpart.

South Korean military experts said a new tactical guided weapon among the projectiles looks very similar to Russian short-range ballistic missiles paraded in Pyongyang last year. Those missiles can carry nuclear warheads.

Critics say South Korea's government is intentionally stopping short of accusing the North of violating UN sanctions by avoiding immediate judgment about the projectiles.

Two Reuters journalists who had been jailed for uncovering a massacre of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar are walking free on Tuesday after spending more than 500 days behind bars.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were arrested in 2017 on allegations they illegally obtained confidential documents from police.

They were each sentenced to seven years in prison for violating the country's Official Secrets Act. Both men deny any wrongdoing.

The case has been condemned internationally as an attack on press freedom.

Myanmar's top court rejected their final appeal last month, but the country's president has pardoned them along with thousands of other prisoners.

It is a custom in Myanmar for authorities to free prisoners around the time of the traditional New Year, which began on April 17.

Wa Lone said, "Along the world, who's wishing to release us, I'd like to thank you very much for everyone. I'm really happy to get to see my family and colleagues. I can't wait to go to my newsroom now."

About 730,000 refugees have fled to neighboring Bangladesh since violence erupted in 2017.

The UN says Myanmar's military carried out the crackdown "with genocidal intent." Myanmar's government denies the allegations.

The environment ministers from the Group of Seven countries have agreed to step up efforts to conserve biodiversity.

Their meeting in Metz, France, ended on Monday with the adoption of a new charter. Japan's Environment Minister, Yoshiaki Harada, was in attendance.

The charter stresses the need to accelerate and intensify efforts to halt biodiversity losses, as well as to value, conserve, restore and wisely use biodiversity.

It adds that the countries are committed to mobilizing additional resources from all sources, both public and private, to conserve biodiversity and use it in a sustainable way.

The new charter came after an intergovernmental group of experts warned in a report that about 1 million animal and plant species are on the verge of extinction.

France's environment minister, Francois de Rugy, hailed the charter as the first concrete step in responding to the group's report.

In 2010, countries approved biodiversity targets at a UN conference in the Japanese city of Nagoya, and are now aiming to come up with new ones in China next year.

An intergovernmental group of experts has warned that about 1 million animal and plant species are on the verge of extinction.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, or IPBES, comprises scientists from more than 130 countries.

The group's first report released on Monday came after the targets for conserving eco-systems were adopted at a UN conference in the Japanese city of Nagoya in 2010.

The report says at least 680 vertebrate species have been driven to extinction since the 16th century. They include the Pinta Island tortoise in the Galapagos and the dodo, a bird that originated in Mauritius.

It also says around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, and that many of them could disappear within decades.

Among the reasons the report cites for driving species to extinction are changes in land and sea use, direct exploitation of organisms, climate change and pollution.

Some online banking services in Japan are being disrupted on Tuesday after a 10-day holiday.

Users of Rakuten Bank cannot log in to their accounts on its website or app to transfer money or check their account balances.

Officials of the firm say they're trying to find the cause of the problem and do not know when the services will be restored. But they say their ATMs are operating normally.

Japan Post Bank's app for checking cash flow and account balances has not been working properly since Tuesday morning. Bank officials say too much access overloaded the system. But they say other online banking services are available.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya has revealed that officials may have found pieces of a missing Japanese Air Self-Defense Force F-35 fighter jet.

The advanced stealth combat aircraft, which was procured from the United States, went down in waters off Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, on April 9. It and the pilot are still missing.

Iwaya told reporters on Tuesday that what appear to be pieces of the cockpit and flight recorder were found on May 3 or later on the seabed near the supposed crash site.

A Japanese Self-Defense Forces ship and a US military-chartered vessel have searched the undersea area, which is up to 1,500 meters deep.

An ocean research vessel from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology has also joined the search.

Iwaya said officials are checking whether the pieces that were retrieved came from the missing plane. He added that the flight recorder's data storage unit has not been found. Without it, it will be difficult to determine what happened to the plane.

The defense minister said the government will continue to search for the missing pilot and plane.

Officials of Okuma Town in Fukushima Prefecture have started working at a newly-built town office, more than eight years after the severe accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011.

Okuma Town is one of the municipalities where the plant is located. All of its residents were ordered to evacuate immediately after the nuclear disaster.

Last month, the evacuation order was partially lifted in some areas of the town, including the district of Ogawara. A newly-built office in the district began operating on Tuesday morning, after eight years and two months.

Nearly all of the administrative functions transferred elsewhere due to the evacuation have now been moved to this new office.

Mayor Toshitsuna Watanabe addressed about 80 officials and said he wants the new office to be the front-line base of the town's reconstruction. He also asked the officials to work to create a safe and secure environment for the townspeople.

Many local residents visited the office on Tuesday.

One resident said he came to file for welfare support. He said the new office is conveniently located close to his home.

Japan's summertime "Cool Biz" campaign started on Tuesday, with many workers across the country dressing more casually. For many people it was also the first work day of the Reiwa era following a 10-day holiday period.

In Tokyo's Kasumigaseki district, where government offices are located, men were seen arriving without neckties or jackets.

At the Environment Ministry, windows were open and some workers wore Hawaiian shirts.

A man in his 40s said Heisei was a turbulent era and now in Reiwa he will renew his feelings and calmly engage in his duties.

A woman wearing sneakers and a Hawaiian shirt said it was hot during the holidays, so she dressed cool today. She said Heisei is the only era she knows, so she is looking forward to the new period.

The government's "Cool Biz" campaign encourages people to dress in less formal business attire and set their air conditioners to around 28 degrees Celsius from May 1 to September 30.

The initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from households by about 40 percent by 2030 from levels in 2013. Energy conservation is expected to remain a key issue in the Reiwa era.

The first baby deer of the new Japanese era of Reiwa has been born at a park in the ancient capital of Nara.

The wild deer that inhabit areas in and around Nara Park are designated a natural treasure by the government. Each year at this time, a local conservation group keeps pregnant does at the "Rokuen" deer shelter in the park to help them safely deliver their young.

On Tuesday morning, a member of the group confirmed the birth of the first fawn of the Reiwa Era.

The female fawn is 54 centimeters long and weighs 3,000 grams.

Reporters were allowed into the shelter to watch the newborn, which was in apparent good health, running around or resting in the shade of a tree.

The conservation group says births will peak toward next month, and about 200 new deer are expected, as in most years.

The baby deer will be shown to the public at the facility starting on June 1.
