US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has called on Japan to open its market to US farm products to reduce the United States' trade deficit with Japan.
Perdue spoke to NHK and other media on Saturday in Niigata City on the sideline of the ministerial meeting of the Group of 20 economies.
Referring to the Japan-US trade talks that started last month, Perdue said the two nations have enjoyed economic and national security relationships and that they should be able to come together and conclude these negotiations.
Perdue added that Japan and the Japanese economy do very well at the expense of American consumers, and that the United States simply wants to be treated as a good customer with reciprocal treatment.
Perdue also commented on the escalating US-China trade dispute, in which China is suggesting it will retaliate against the increased tariffs the US is imposing on Chinese imports.
He accused China of trying to cause political damage to the United States, despite needing its agricultural products.
Perdue said the US government will work to keep US farmers from being adversely affected by the dispute, suggesting measures to support farmers in case China raises tariffs on imports from the United States.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has called for an end to the mutual distrust between Japan and North Korea, and urged the countries to start afresh.
Suga was speaking at a symposium hosted by the Japanese government in New York to boost international awareness about the abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korea.
Suga is minister in charge of the abduction issue. He said Japan is doing its best to take the initiative on the issue and bring all of the abductees home.
He added that the Japanese government's policy toward the North, which involves comprehensively resolving the matter of the abductions as well as the nuclear and missile issues, is unchanged.
The chief cabinet secretary said the government will continue trying to resolve issues from the past, and to normalize ties with North Korea.
He said North Korea can enjoy a bright future with its natural and human resources if it takes the right path, and that Japan is willing to help the North realize this potential.
Suga added that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has repeatedly said he is determined to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in person, without preconditions.
He said the countries are at an important juncture, and it's vital that they seize the opportunity to act.

An international conference has reached a deal aimed at restricting shipments of plastic waste that is hard to recycle.
At a meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention in Geneva, countries agreed on Friday to amend the treaty, which restricts the transfer of harmful waste across national boundaries.
The amendment would introduce new rules that require countries to obtain prior informed consent before exporting contaminated or mixed plastic waste.
The Environment Ministry says the change is aimed at promoting more thorough washing and sorting of plastic waste for recycling.
The United Nations estimates 100 million tons of plastic waste leak into the world's oceans, prompting concerns that it could harm not only the marine ecosystem but also human health.
The amendment will come into effect in 2021.

Hong Kong's legislative assembly fell into chaos on Saturday over an extradition bill designed to allow the transfer of criminal suspects to mainland China.
The government of the semi-autonomous territory submitted the bill to the legislature last month with the aim of putting the revised law into effect later this year.
The move faces strong opposition from pro-democracy parties and groups.
They say it would allow Beijing to make false charges against its critics, and demand their transfer.
A committee set up to discuss the matter has been unable to select a chairperson for over a month due to opposition by pro-democracy legislators.
Fighting broke out in the legislature on Saturday as pro-democracy lawmakers took the microphone to stop the proceedings. One person was injured and taken out on a stretcher.
The government's attempt to revise the law has also drawn objections from the business community.
A crowd gathered at the legislature building on Saturday to hold protests.

Germany is experimenting a new transport system that allows electrified trucks to run on highways and will cut emissions of greenhouse gases.
The German government has been working with electronics maker Siemens to introduce eHighway, which powers vehicles via overhead electric lines.
The hybrid trucks, which run on electricity or diesel, can travel on to their destinations once they leave the highway.
The experiment started in the central state of Hesse on Tuesday with a cargo truck running between Frankfurt Airport and an industrial park 10 kilometers away.
The government is planning to add more trucks as it expands eHighway to 3 other states.
Germany plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% by 2050, and is planning to spend 70 million euros or about 79 million dollars to build the new system.
