Weather officials in Japan are warning of heavy rains as severe tropical storm Krosa approaches the western part of the country. They say it could make landfall by Thursday.

The Meteorological Agency expects winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 160 kilometers per hour in the southern part of the Kyushu region through Wednesday. The officials also expect waves of up to 10 meters off the Shikoku region.

The officials say the rain will intensify from Wednesday. They say some areas on the Pacific coast of western and eastern Japan may have localized downpours of more than 80 millimeters per hour.

They say heavy rains may continue even after the storm moves off, and that some areas could see overall precipitation of 1,000 millimeters.

Many people in Japan are now out vacationing during the Bon summer holiday period.

Officials are advising the holidaymakers to check the latest updates and to watch for stormy weather, which may bring floods and landslides.

The storm could disrupt transportation systems. Railway operators in western Japan say they may be forced to suspend services on Wednesday and Thursday.

Airlines are also asking passengers to check for flight cancelations. They advise people to check online for updates.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has expressed his resolve to revise Japan's Constitution during a visit to the grave of his father, former foreign minister Shintaro Abe.

Abe spoke to reporters while visiting the grave in Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is his constituency, on Tuesday.

Abe said he told his father that he had won the first national election of the Reiwa era, and that he now feels a renewed motivation to live up to the mandate given to him by the people. Abe's governing coalition won last month's Upper House election.

He also said he told his father that the time has come to push for Diet debate on constitutional amendments, calling it one of the greatest challenges for the Liberal Democratic Party since its foundation.

US President Donald Trump has suggested that an explosion at a Russian military facility last week was caused by a failed test involving a nuclear-powered missile, saying the US government is gathering information on the incident.

Trump tweeted on Monday that the US is learning much from the "failed missile explosion" in Russia. He wrote that the Russian "Skyfall" explosion has people worried about the air around the facility and far beyond.

"Skyfall" is the code name used by the US military for Russia's latest nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik.

Trump also tweeted, "We have similar, though more advanced, technology."

On Saturday, Russia's state-run nuclear firm, Rosatom, said five engineers died in Thursday's explosion in Arkhangelsk in northwestern Russia. It said they were testing a radioactive isotope power source for a rocket engine.

The Russian government has not disclosed details on the experiment, including whether it involved technology for the "Skyfall" cruise missile.

The Russian Defense Ministry initially said two people died and that there was no change in radiation levels. However, officials in the nearby city of Severodvinsk reported a brief rise.

The United States is increasingly alarmed by Russia's development of new types of weapons that could bypass existing missile-defense systems.

The World Health Organization says two experimental drugs have proved effective against the Ebola virus in clinical tests.

An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has sickened about 2,800 people and killed almost 1,900 in the past year, mostly in the eastern province of North Kivu.

The WHO on Monday announced the results of clinical tests that started in the country last November on the safety and effectiveness of four drugs.

Researchers tested the drugs on about 700 patients.

They found the mortality rate for patients who had been administered REGN-EB3, developed by a US pharmaceutical, was 29 percent, and for those given mAb114, developed by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was 34 percent.

Mortality rates for the other two drugs were significantly higher.

Patients who had been administered either REGN-EB3 or mAb114 in the early stages of the disease, while their blood virus levels were low, had a 90-percent survival rate.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID, described both drugs as highly effective, saying the results of tests were "very good news" for the fight against Ebola.

Japan's producer price index fell in July, reflecting falling demand due to an ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China.

Bank of Japan figures released on Tuesday show a 0.6 percent decline from a year earlier on the index for prices of goods traded among companies.

This marks the second straight month of year-on-year decline, and a larger drop from 0.1 percent in June.

Iron and other scrap prices fell about 20 percent, while copper and other nonferrous metals saw a more than 6 percent decline.

BOJ officials say the US-China trade frictions have worsened market conditions over many areas.

The officials say the rising yen is also putting downward pressure on prices, especially imported items.

A ceremony to remember the victims of Japan's worst air disaster took place on Monday, the 34th anniversary of the tragedy.

A Japan Airlines Boeing 747 jumbo jet bound for Osaka from Tokyo crashed into a mountain in Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, on August 12, 1985. The accident left 520 people dead.

Since then, bereaved relatives and others have been remembering the victims in visits to the mountain every year. Early on Monday morning, they began climbing to the crash site. They placed flowers and lit incense sticks at the site of the accident and offered prayers at a memorial.

A ceremony to mourn the victims was held at the foot of the mountain later in the day. Participants also included local residents and JAL officials. They laid flowers at an altar and lit 520 candles -- one for each victim.

The attendees observed a moment of silence at 6:56 p.m., the time of the crash.

A challenge is how to pass memories of the tragedy on to future generations as the victims' relatives are getting old.

It has been revealed that a Japan Airlines copilot was replaced after failing a preflight alcohol test at an airport in southwestern Japan.

The 54-year-old male copilot was to board a flight from Kagoshima to Tokyo on Saturday.

Japan Airlines says up to 0.09 milligrams of alcohol per liter were detected in his breath.

Japan's government rules ban any pilot or copilot from boarding a flight if any alcohol is detected.

The copilot has reportedly explained he mistook a cup of sake for water and drank 30 to 50 milliliters of it while having lunch at his hotel about two hours before his scheduled flight.

Japan Airlines apologized for the incident, which follows a series of alcohol test failures. It has again promised measures to prevent a recurrence.

Families of victims of the 1985 Japan Airlines crash that killed 520 people are angry at the latest alcohol incident.

Kuniko Miyajima, who heads a group of victims' families, said pilots had been supposed to remember the crash and renew their safety awareness as the day of the crash, August 12, was approaching.

She described the copilot's drinking two days before that day as a betrayal of the families' continuous calls for flight safety. She said the airline bears a heavy responsibility.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games organizing committee has finalized a detailed schedule for the Paralympics. Finals for the largest number of events throughout the competition period will be held on the first Sunday after the Games begin.

On Tuesday, the organizers released the schedule for the 22 sports and 540 events.

The opening and closing ceremonies will be at the new national stadium on August 25 and September 6, respectively. Both will run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., the same as the Olympics.

The awarding of the 540 gold medals will be split between the two halves of the competition period as a way to maintain excitement throughout the Games.

The first gold medal event will be in cycling on August 26, the day after the opening ceremony.

The organizers have named August 30, "Golden Sunday," when finals for 63 events will be held. They say the weekend slot will allow many children to watch and that they hope it's a chance for them to think about diversity and having an inclusive society.

New sports will be towards the end of the Games. Taekwondo will be from September 3 to 5, and the finals for badminton will be on September 5 and 6.

To avoid the expected severe heat, the organizing committee has moved up the original starting times for the marathon and triathlon by 30 minutes.

The men's and women's triathlon will start at 7: 30 a.m. on August 29 and 30, and the marathon at 6:30 a.m. on September 6.

The starting time for equestrian events will be pushed back for up to three hours to avoid the hottest part of the day. The competition will be held over a period of five days, from August 27 to 31, extended by one day from the original schedule.

In addition, the organizing committee says it will start accepting applications for ticket purchases on its official website on August 22.

England, led by Eddie Jones, a former head coach of Japan's national team, moved up one notch to fourth place.
