Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says she is willing to create a platform for dialogue with protestors, but stopped short of accepting their demands.

People in Hong Kong have been rallying against a bill that would allow the transfer of suspects to mainland China to face trial.

Organizers say 1.7 million people joined demonstrations on Sunday, the second-largest number since protests began more than two months ago. The event ended without clashes with the police.

Lam said at a news conference on Tuesday that she "sincerely hopes this was the beginning of society returning to peace and staying away from violence."

Lam added her government will immediately begin work to establish a platform for dialogue. She said she would start this week by listening to groups that had proposed talks in the past.

She also made clear her government will invite overseas experts to study whether police responded properly to the protests.

However, Lam again rejected protesters' demands for a retraction of the extradition bill and an independent inquiry into police actions.

The pro-democracy group that organized Sunday's massive demonstrations in Hong Kong has strongly criticized remarks by the territory's leader Carrie Lam.

The group's representatives said they cannot trust what the government says, and that reconciliation is possible only if the government accepts the people's demands.

They said they have not given up and will continue protests in their own way.

The group is planning another demonstration on August 31.

US Vice President Mike Pence has urged China to respect Hong Kong's laws, as mass protests continue in the Chinese territory.

There are growing concerns in the United States that Beijing may use armed force against demonstrators in Hong Kong opposed to a controversial extradition bill.

China has deployed armed police in the city of Shenzhen, which neighbors Hong Kong.

In a speech in the US State of Michigan on Monday, Pence said Beijing needs to honor its commitments, including those it made through the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration to respect the integrity of Hong Kong's laws.

He warned it will be much harder for the US to make a trade deal with China if something violent happens in Hong Kong.

Pence also said the US administration will continue to urge Beijing to act in a humanitarian manner and for China and the demonstrators to resolve their differences peaceably.

The Chinese government says the problem in Hong Kong is purely a domestic matter.

The US government appears to want to pressure China over the Hong Kong issue as trade frictions between the two countries continue.

US social media companies Twitter and Facebook say they have suspended accounts aimed at undermining ongoing protests in Hong Kong. They say they confirmed the involvement of Chinese authorities in the accounts.

Twitter said on Monday that it had suspended 936 accounts believed to have originated in mainland China. It said the accounts showed contents that undermine the legitimacy of protests in Hong Kong, inciting political discord in the region.

Many of the accounts reportedly used VPN, or virtual private network services, to access Twitter, as the Chinese government has blocked access to the social media platform.

Twitter said its survey found the systematic involvement of Chinese authorities in the accounts.

Facebook also said on Monday that it had removed five accounts and seven pages, some of which portrayed protesters as terrorists. It said posts were uploaded by fake accounts presented as those of media outlets. Facebook added that it uncovered the possible involvement of persons linked to Chinese authorities.

The two companies say they will steadily deal with such illicit conduct.

Korean Air says it will suspend more flights from South Korea to Japan, due to lower travel demand amid worsening bilateral ties between the two countries.

The airline said on Tuesday that it will fully suspend flights between the southern city of Busan and Japan's Kansai Airport in Osaka Prefecture from September.

From November, it plans to cancel flights between the southern resort island Jeju and Japan's Narita and Kansai airports.

The airline is also planning to suspend three routes between Incheon Airport and Japan's Komatsu, Kagoshima and Asahikawa airports for about a month starting in late September.

Korean Air officials say the company will temporarily reduce the number of flights on five routes, including those between Incheon and Fukuoka, as well as those between Busan and Narita.

The airline has already announced that it will suspend flights between Busan and the northern Japanese city of Sapporo from September.

The airline officials say that in order to offset lower demand to Japan, they will increase the number of flights to Southeast Asia, Oceania, and China.

Leaders of the Group of Seven countries are unlikely to issue a communique after their meeting in France over the weekend, as they remain divided over key issues.

It would be the first summit with no communique since meetings like this began in 1975.

The G7 summit is due to open in Biarritz on Saturday. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be among the participants.

NHK has learned that arrangements are underway to wrap up the meeting without a leaders' communique, due in large part to the countries' differing approaches to free trade and global warming.

These issues were also sticking points at the G20 summit in Osaka in June.

But the leaders are expected to draw up documents after discussing themes such as partnership with Africa and the fight against inequality.

The Kingdom of Bahrain says it will participate in an international coalition proposed by the United States to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Bahrain's state media reported that King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa confirmed Bahrain's participation on Monday during a visit by the commander of the US Central Command to the nation's capital, Manama.

Bahrain is the second country after the United Kingdom to announce its participation. Observers saw Bahrain as an important base for the coalition, as the US Fifth Fleet overseeing the Persian Gulf is headquartered there. The British Royal Navy also has a supply base in the country.

The US Central Command released a statement on Monday saying it appreciates the King's decision to take an active role in preserving the freedom of navigation, promoting maritime security and de-escalating regional tensions.

The statement says that the free flow of commerce throughout international waterways is a linchpin of the global economy. They also said that threats to the free flow of commerce are an international problem requiring an international solution.

Amid rising tensions with Iran, the US government has been calling on nations to join the mission in securing freedom of navigation.

Bahrain, keeping pace with Saudi Arabia, has taken hostile diplomatic policies toward Iran.

But many other countries in the Gulf region are taking a cautious stance, as they do not want tensions between the US and Iran to further escalate. It remains uncertain whether more countries will join the US-led coalition.

The US Commerce Department has added 46 affiliates of Chinese tech giant Huawei to a list of firms with which American companies cannot trade without approval.

The move comes after the department in May banned US firms from doing business with Huawei and 68 of its affiliates without government approval, citing security concerns.

The department announced on Monday that it added the 46 Huawei-affiliated entities to its so-called Entity List.

The tightening of measures against Huawei came despite US President Donald Trump suggesting he might ease pressure on the tech giant following his meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in June.

The department also announced that it will extend by 90 days a reprieve that is designed to allow US firms the necessary time to transition away from Huawei.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement that more time is necessary to prevent any disruption.

Southeast Asian economies are struggling due to the US-China trade dispute.

In the April-to-June period, growth in many of the region's six major economies slowed or remained flat compared to the previous quarter.

The Indonesian economy -- the largest in the region -- expanded by just 5.0 percent, the Thai economy by 2.3 percent and Singapore's by 0.1 percent.

Exports from Thailand and Singapore were sluggish amid the US-China trade frictions and a slowing global economy.

Thailand's GDP slowed to its weakest pace in nearly five years, and Singapore's to its lowest pace in 10 years.

Conversely, Vietnam recorded a high growth rate of 6.7 percent on the back of brisk exports to the United States.

The central banks in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia have already cut interest rates this year in a bid to bolster their economies.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has expressed hope of breaking the trade deadlock with Japan through dialogue, prior to bilateral talks with her Japanese counterpart Taro Kono in China.

Kang spoke to reporters on Tuesday before her departure for Beijing. Kang and Kono are also scheduled to hold three-way talks, together with their Chinese counterpart, on Wednesday.

Kang referred to Japan's decision to remove South Korea from its list of trading partners eligible for preferential export procedures on August 28.

She described the situation as very difficult, but said she is prepared to actively explain South Korea's position.

Some South Koreans are urging the government to scrap an intelligence-sharing pact with Japan.

The General Security of Military Information Agreement, or GSOMIA, has been automatically renewed every year since it was signed in 2016. But either side can pull out after giving notice by August 24.

Kang said nothing has been decided yet about the pact.

Japan and the United States support renewing the agreement, and South Korea's presidential office has indicated it must carefully consider whether to scrap it.

South Korean media say a decision could come after the upcoming foreign ministerial talks.

A Sony subsidiary is buying a US game developer in an attempt to boost the software lineup for its console.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games have made a deal for the Japanese company to acquire the US firm. The acquisition price has not been disclosed.

Insomniac Games, established in 1994, has created a number of popular titles. Its "Spider-Man" game, which came out last year for Sony's PlayStation 4 console, has reportedly sold 13.2 million copies worldwide.

This deal comes as the industry is undergoing a major change. Playing games on smartphones and PCs through online streaming is gaining popularity. Google will launch game streaming services this autumn.

Japan's Prince Hisahito has paid a courtesy call on the King and Queen of Bhutan.

Prince Hisahito became second in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne following the enthronement of his uncle, Emperor Naruhito, in May.

His parents, Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, accompanied the 12-year-old prince on a visit to Bhutan's political and religious center "Tashichho Dzong" in the capital, Thimphu, on Monday.

Prince Hisahito, who was wearing a traditional formal kimono, and other members of the Imperial family were welcomed by more than 100 musicians and dancers in the traditional costumes of Bhutan.

The three walked on a red carpet decorated with colored rice in the shape of flowers, crossing the courtyard to reach the office of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.

The Imperial family met the King and his wife, Queen Jetsun Pema, before moving to another room for lunch. Their meeting lasted one hour longer than scheduled.

Crown Prince and Princess Akishino and Prince Hisahito then visited a national archery ground and view a performance of Bhutan's national sport.

Prince Hisahito enjoyed watching two teams compete by shooting arrows at targets from a distance of 140 meters.

He then tried his hand at archery.
