North Korean state media says Saturday's launch of two projectiles was a test to verify the capabilities of a new weapons system.

The Korean Central News Agency said on Sunday that analysis of the latest test proved the new weapon performed "perfectly" as designed.

It said the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, personally oversaw the launch and expressed "great satisfaction." Kim is quoted as saying the new weapon has an "advantageous tactical character" different from existing systems.

South Korea's military says the North fired what it believes to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan early Saturday morning.

It says they were launched from South Hamgyong Province in the eastern part of the country. They reportedly flew over 400 kilometers, reaching an altitude of about 48 kilometers.

North Korean state media released a separate statement by a senior official, saying US President Donald Trump accepts the North's having short-range missiles and carrying out tests.

In the statement, Kwon Jong Gun, Director-General of the foreign ministry's department of American affairs, says "even the US president in effect recognizes the self-defensive rights of a sovereign state, saying that it is a small missile test which a lot of countries do."

During the past two weeks, the North has conducted a series of test launches. The US and South Korean militaries believe all of the projectiles have been short-range missiles.

After a launch last Tuesday, North Korea said it had fired a new type of tactical guided missile.

US President Donald Trump has written that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told him his country was ready to resume talks on denuclearization as soon as US-South Korea military exercises end.

Trump tweeted on Saturday that Kim complained of the "ridiculous and expensive" joint drills.

Trump said Kim offered him "a small apology" for the flurry of missile tests and that Kim wants to meet once again to "start negotiations" after the exercises were over. Trump added that he's looking "forward to seeing Kim Jong Un in the not too distant future."

North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range missiles on Saturday. It was the fifth in a series of launches by Pyongyang since July 25.

Trump and Kim agreed in June at a meeting in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea to revive stalled denuclearization talks, but so far no progress has been made.

A car bomb in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi has killed three UN staff members, injuring others.

The UN says the explosion took place in a shopping district near its office on Saturday. The Associated Press quoted a local official as saying the attack targeted a UN convoy.

The explosion came as the country's warring parties had accepted a UN-proposed ceasefire to observe the Muslim Eid holiday, which begins on Sunday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for all parties to respect the truce.

Libya has been in a state of continuous conflict since longtime ruler Muammar al-Qadhafi was deposed in 2011. Fighting between forces led by General Khalifa Haftar based in the east and the UN-backed interim government in the west has intensified since April.

Over 2 million Muslim pilgrims from around the world have offered prayers at a sacred hill in Saudi Arabia on what is seen as the climax of an annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Hajj is a religious duty all Muslims are required to perform at least once in their lifetime if they are healthy and wealthy enough to do so.

Numerous pilgrims wearing white garments prayed on the slopes of Mount Arafat on Saturday. That's where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have delivered his final sermon.

A pilgrim from Algeria said before the worship that praying at the hill is the most important Hajj rite. He added he will pray for God to give guidance.

Tensions in the Middle East are high over Iran. But the Saudi Arabian government has been accepting Hajj pilgrims from the country, with which Riyadh has no diplomatic ties.

Delta Air Lines has announced that it is going to transfer all its flights from Narita Airport in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, which they have used over the years to operate flights connecting the United States and Asia, to Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

The US carrier said on Friday that, starting next March, all its flights to and from five US cities, including Atlanta and Seattle, will use Haneda Airport.

With these additions, Delta, which already uses Haneda Airport for its flights to and from Los Angeles and Minneapolis, will be operating the most number of US-bound routes out of Haneda Airport among all airlines.

The company says the shift from Narita to Haneda will allow its customers to access the city center more quickly.

With the withdrawal from Narita, Delta will terminate its service between Narita and Singapore next month and that between Narita and Manila next March, and will instead use Incheon Airport in South Korea, which is home to its alliance partner Korean Air.

American Airlines, United Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are also planning to add more flights to their existing routes out of Haneda, and also add new routes, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
