A survey has found thousands of secondary school students in Hong Kong support a boycott of classes in support of anti-government protests.

The poll comes against a backdrop of growing unrest in the territory, where protests against an extradition bill that would allow suspects to be sent to mainland China have snowballed into a wider anti-government movement.

Student groups held a news conference on Friday.

They said that a survey of about 20,000 junior high and high school students found nearly 90 percent of respondents support a campaign to skip classes, and nearly 25 percent are in favor of a weekly boycott.

The groups have called on students to skip classes every Monday after the school term starts in September.

There are about 500 junior high and high schools in Hong Kong. Between them, they have some 320,000 students.

Education authorities are opposed to a boycott. They say it would deprive students of learning opportunities, and that politics should be kept out of education.

There have also been calls for teachers to join the demonstrations.

North Korean officials have cancelled a plan to attend a seminar for next summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

North Korea was expected to send a three-member delegation, including vice sports minister Won Kil U, to the seminar to be held in the Japanese capital next week.

The Japan Olympic Committee will use the occasion to provide officials from Olympic committees of countries and regions participating in the Olympics with information about the Olympic venues and other facilities.

The Japanese government has said that it will give the North Korean delegation permission to attend the seminar as an exception from Japan's sanctions that bans North Korean nationals in principle from entering the country.

Informed sources say that the North Korean side notified Japan of its decision to cancel the trip by Friday.

The North has also cancelled its planned participation in the World Judo Championships to be held from August 25 at Tokyo's Budokan.

The country hasn't mentioned reasons for the cancellations.

North Korea has agreed with the International Olympic Committee on a plan to form joint teams with South Korea in four sports categories including judo for the Tokyo Games.

North Korea's state media says that the country's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of a new weapon again on Friday morning.

The media reported that Kim said the country has to make efforts to secure national defense forces in all aspects.

South Korea's military said on Friday that North Korea fired two projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles off its eastern coast.

The launch was the sixth by Pyongyang since July 25.

South Korea will tighten radiation inspections of imports of waste materials for recycling such as plastic from Japan and Russia.

The environment ministry announced on Friday that the radiation inspection records of waste plastic, batteries and tires from the two countries will be checked once a month instead of once every three months.

The ministry says it is taking additional environmental and health safety measures.

Japan accounts for about 40 percent of South Korea's imports of waste plastic, 15 percent of waste batteries and 3 percent of waste tires.

South Korea had already announced on August 8 that it would strengthen inspections of coal ash from Japan. It imports most of its coal ash from Japan.

South Korean media have reported that the moves are seen as a countermeasure against Tokyo's tightening control of exports to the South.

President Moon Jae-in called for talks with Japan to resolve the dispute over export controls in his speech on Thursday.

Analysts say the tighter inspections are apparently an attempt to urge Japan to sit down soon for bilateral talks.

President Donald Trump's administration reportedly is moving ahead with the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Taiwan.

The Washington Post and other media outlets reported on Friday that the administration had informally notified Congress of its plan to sell 66 jets worth 8 billion dollars to Taiwan.

The decision follows a request from the Taiwanese government of President Tsai Ing-wen. She has been seeking to modernize the island's military equipment to counter growing pressure from China.

The US media reported the sale would be one of the largest single arms transactions between the US and Taiwan in the past several years.

Last month, the US government approved a plan to sell 2.2 billion dollars' worth of weapons to Taiwan, including 108 tanks, 250 surface-to-air missiles and ammunition.

Observers say the United States is using the arms sale to put pressure on China at a time when the two countries are locked in a tit-for-tat trade dispute.

China has strongly criticized the US move. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Friday that the sales severely violate the one-China principle, interfere the country's internal affairs, and undermine China's sovereignty.

Thousands of travelers at airports across the United States have run into long delays due to a computer systems failure at the Customs and Border Protection agency. Officials say the system is coming back online.

The agency tweeted on Friday afternoon that a temporary outage was affecting systems at various airports.

Those affected include airports in New York and Los Angeles, where officers had to process passengers manually.

Customs and Border Protection says it is monitoring the incident and there is no indication so far the disruption was malicious.

Reuters says the agency processes more than 350,000 passengers and crew daily.

A car used to promote a James Bond film has fetched 6.4 million dollars at an auction in Monterey, California.

The 1965 Aston Martin DB5 features fully functional gadgets created for the fictional British secret service agent James Bond. The modifications include tire slashers mounted on its wheel hubs, and a machine gun in each bumper.

The car was originally created to promote the movie "Thunderball," but didn't actually appear in the 007 film.

Local media say the car has been kept in good condition, making it the most expensive "Bond Car" ever sold.

US actor Peter Fonda has died at the age of 79.

Reports in US media say Fonda died on Friday morning at his home in Los Angeles due to respiratory failure caused by lung cancer.

Fonda, the son of Hollywood leading man Henry Fonda and brother of actress Jane Fonda, was born in New York in 1940.

He made his debut on the big screen in 1963 and shot to fame six years later with "Easy Rider," a film that came to represent the 1960s counterculture movement. Fonda co-wrote the script, and starred as a freewheeling motorcyclist opposite Dennis Hopper, who played a fellow biker.

Fonda won a Golden Globe for his performance in the 1997 film "Ulee's Gold." He was also nominated for an Academy Award.
