North Korea says it conducted a test "of great significance" at its Sohae satellite launching ground on Saturday afternoon.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency released a statement by a spokesperson for the Academy of National Defense Science on Sunday.
It said the results of the test will have an important effect on changing the strategic position of North Korea in the near future.
But the statement did not specify what was tested.
Analysts say the test may have been related to the country's missile program. The North has fired what were believed to be long-range ballistic missiles from the site at Tongchang-ri in the past. The country claimed they were satellite-carrying rockets.
The site was once used for missile engine testing as well.
North Korea is apparently trying to keep the United States in check by hinting at the possibility of resuming long-range ballistic missile launches. The North has been urging the US to make concessions by year-end to break the deadlock in denuclearization talks.

The North Korean envoy to the United Nations says denuclearization is off the negotiating table with the United States.
Ambassador Kim Song said in a statement on Saturday that the sustained and substantial dialogue sought by the US was a time-saving trick to suit its domestic political agenda.
Kim added that lengthy talks with Washington are not needed, warning that Pyongyang may terminate denuclearization negotiations with the US.
The talks have been stalled as the US is calling on North Korea to come up with concrete steps toward denuclearization, while the North is urging the US to make concessions by the end of the year.
The US has not accepted requests from Pyongyang for lifting sanctions and a complete halt to US-South Korea joint military exercises.
The US ambassador to the UN, Kelly Craft, who chairs the Security Council suggested on Friday the council may issue a statement condemning the North for its recent launches of ballistic missiles.
Craft is considering holding a meeting on the North's human rights abuses, including abductions.

North Korea's state-run media says leader Kim Jong Un has celebrated the completion of a hot spring resort in the country's west.
Korean Central Television showed on Sunday footage of Kim cutting the ribbon at a ceremony.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, carried a report saying that Choe Ryong Hae, the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, praised the completion of the resort.
Choe said it was a great victory for the country's self-reliance policy, and showed the world that prosperity can be achieved, even in the face of the worst adversity.
The reports also showcased services offered at the facility, including skiing and horse-riding. The TV program shows Kim himself riding a ski lift.
Signs at a hotel entrance are written in English and Chinese, showing North Korea's interest in attracting tourists from overseas as a way to get foreign currency.
Pyongyang has been stressing that economic growth is possible even under sanctions from the United States and other countries. Earlier this month, the regime celebrated finishing construction work on a new town in a mountainous area in the country's north.

The United States has freed an Iranian man from jail in exchange for the release of a US national by Iran.
US President Donald Trump said in a statement on Saturday that a Chinese-American researcher convicted of spying in Iran has been freed after being detained in the country since 2016.
Trump said that freeing Americans held captive is of vital importance to his administration.
He thanked Iran on Twitter for what he described as "a very fair negotiation." He added, "See, we can make a deal together."
A senior US government official said that the freed Iranian researcher was arrested in the US last year for allegedly trying to transport banned material out of the US, breaching the US sanctions on Iran.
US media say the prisoner swap was carried out in Switzerland.
Our correspondent in Washington says despite the successful prisoner swap, it is not certain that relations between the US and Iran will improve in light of Iran's strong distrust of Washington.

A giant installation has been set up at the COP25 UN climate change conference in Madrid to raise awareness of global warming and health hazards caused by fossil fuels.
"Pollution Pods" were set up by a British environmental group and other organizations to give visitors a firsthand experience of the air in cities such as Beijing, New Delhi and London.
A tent is separated into five compartments, with each recreating the air quality in a city based on its annual average of pollutants, including PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide from car exhaust, as well as coal burning power stations.
Air quality in New Delhi is said to be the worst in the world. The room that represents the Indian capital is filled with a white smoke-like substance.
A family who went in came out saying they could not see their hands in front of their faces.
A 15-year-old Spanish boy said he wanted to get out right away. He said the world must think about how to stop air pollution.
One of the organizers said every country has to take action to stop global warming and protect public health.

Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth, is experiencing a rare phenomenon. Flowers are blooming due to unprecedented rainfall.
Pink flowers are blanketing the desert in places where plants don't grow.
The "flowering desert" has been in bloom for about 4 months and is drawing tourists from around the world.
The Atacama is one of the most popular deserts in the world and is known as a place where it hardly ever rains. But abnormal weather believed to be caused by global warming has seen heavy rain hit the desert in recent years.
Local government officials say the intense rains have disrupted people's lives. They say work to repair roads that were flooded and damaged is underway at 50 locations.

The broken racket used by tennis superstar Serena Williams at the 2018 US Open fetched 17,000 dollars at an auction on Saturday.
Williams smashed the racket during the final match, which she lost to Japan's Naomi Osaka.
US media reports say Williams gave the racket to a college student who was working as a ball boy. He later sold it for 500 dollars.
It is not clear how the racket ended up going up for auction. But media reports say the boy is suffering from major regrets.
He has reportedly stopped making his Instagram account open to public view. He had posted a photo with Williams on the account.

About 2,000 people have gathered in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to remember the victims of the Japanese attack there 78 years ago.
US veterans and the victims' relatives assembled in a park overlooking the harbor on Saturday.
They observed a moment of silence at 07:55 a.m., the same time when the attack began on December 7,1941. More than 2,400 people died in the attack.
Rear Admiral Robert Chadwick, commander of US Navy region Hawaii said that they are commemorating the tragic attack and taking the opportunity to honor and recognize the resilience of their nation.
A salute was fired toward the harbor where the battle ships which sank during the assault came to rest under water.
Every year, fewer people remain who can share their firsthand experiences of the attack.
Key words : hospital birth
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20191208_10/
A hospital in southwestern Japan plans to accept mothers who want to give birth in complete confidentiality. It says cases would be limited to women in desperate situations, such as those with unwanted pregnancies or in financial difficulty.
Jikei Hospital in the city of Kumamoto announced on Saturday that it would go ahead with the plan on its own, after negotiations with the city government fell through.
It says the program is aimed at discouraging pregnant women in difficult situations from giving birth alone at home, or in other dangerous circumstances.
Under the program, mothers would only have to reveal their names to a consultant at the hospital and can give birth there.
If a mother gives the baby up, the child will have the opportunity to learn about the parent's identity at a certain age.
Jikei Hospital already operates a baby hatch, which allows parents to leave their infants anonymously.
Takeshi Hasuda, deputy director of the hospital, said that denying confidential births may lead to precarious situations for babies. He said the program will be limited to cases in which the hospital determines there are no other options.
Germany allows confidential childbirth at hospitals and grants the children the right to know their mothers' identity when they reach a certain age.
