North Korea's state-run media says that the expanded meeting of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers' Party has been held, and was presided over by the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

The party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, carried a large picture of Kim instructing senior military officers on the front page of its Sunday edition.

It said that the leader gave an analysis of the complicated domestic and international situation.

Kim is also quoted as having said that important measures to bolster the overall armed forces, including the Korean People's Army, will be discussed and decided as required by the changing situation.

The newspaper also said that there was a discussion on the accelerated development of defensive power, but did not mention the details.

Pyongyang had said that the Workers' Party will hold a plenary meeting of its decision-making Central Committee late this month.

The military may have made some decisions regarding relations with the United States and its missile program in the run-up to the plenary session.

The leaders of Japan and the United States have agreed to continue close cooperation in dealing with North Korea amid Pyongyang's increased provocative stance.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump talked over the phone for nearly 90 minutes on Saturday night, Japan time. The conversation came at Trump's request.

The leaders spent much time on analyzing the latest information on North Korea and closely coordinating plans to cope with the country.

Pyongyang has been acting provocatively ahead of the year-end deadline it set for US concessions over denuclearization talks.

Abe criticized North Korea's dangerous provocations and told Trump that he continues to completely support a process initiated by the US and North Korea.

The leaders agreed to further increase their cooperation to resolve the issue of abductions of Japanese nationals by Pyongyang as well as the country's nuclear and missile programs.

Abe also explained to Trump what he discussed with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at their summit in Tokyo on Friday.

Abe told Trump that he will continue to work closely with the US and maintain diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and stabilize the situation in the Middle East.

Abe also briefed Trump on the Japanese Diet's approval of a new trade deal with the US earlier this month and he intends to continue boosting bilateral cooperation.

After the phone talks, Abe told reporters that he will leave for China on Monday to attend a trilateral summit with the leaders of China and South Korea.

Abe said he wants to use the summit to have full discussions for the peace and stability of the region and to confirm cooperation. The prime minister added he will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Russia's Foreign Ministry has criticized US legislation imposing sanctions on entities involved in the construction of pipelines meant to export Russian natural gas.

The ministry publicized the criticism on Saturday after US President Donald Trump on Friday signed the law that targets two undersea pipeline projects -- Nord Stream 2 to Germany and TurkStream to Turkey.

The ministry accused the US of trying to steal Russia's supply of energy to Europe. It said the legislation will slow Europe's economic development, rather than disrupt Russian exports.

The ministry added the US does not care about its NATO partners for the sake of its geopolitical ambitions.

Moscow is apparently seeking to erode ties between the US and Europe.

Washington is already at loggerheads with its NATO allies over its demand that they increase their defense budgets. Turkey, a NATO member, is ramping up its military cooperation with Russia.

Members of the public have run on the track at the main venue of next year's Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics for the first time since it was completed last month.

Taking a cue from 2020, the same number of people chosen from the public took part in the event at the new National Stadium on Saturday.

The participants wore red T-shirts of the same design. They braved cold weather to jog a lap on the 400-meter track and compete in a relay in which each runner dashed 50 meters.

Japanese sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu served as the anchor of a relay group and crossed the finish line with a smile. He is the first Japanese to break the 10-second barrier in the men's 100-meter dash.

Kiryu said the event will serve him well with the Tokyo Games just around the corner. He also said he will work hard to take a medal in the Olympics.

The stadium has about 60,000 spectator seats, which come in green, brown, and three other colors to create an image like a mosaic. Its roof consists of steel and a lot of timber.

Night-time illumination has returned to the walls of the fire-damaged Shuri Castle in Okinawa Prefecture.

The main structures of the castle in the city of Naha were completely destroyed in a massive fire in October.

The operator of the Shuri Castle Park has since kept lights off at night, except those at the Shurei-mon gate and some other structures.

The operator has now resumed lighting up the walls now that safety has been confirmed.

Lights were switched on just before 6 p.m. on Saturday. Visitors were seen taking photos.

Some of them said they were surprised to see the burned buildings, but the illumination was fantastic.

Others expressed hope that the castle will be rebuilt soon.

A locomotive featuring a special Christmas signboard has drawn crowds in Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan.

The train, fitted with an emblem of the letter "X", was preparing to depart from Shin-Yamaguchi Station on Sunday.

Kindergarten and elementary school children sang Christmas songs while mascots dressed as Santa Claus welcomed visitors. People were seen taking photos and looking into the cars.

Every Christmastime, the train makes a round trip between Shin-Yamaguchi and Tsuwano Station in neighboring Shimane Prefecture.

People waved goodbye as the train departed with a whistle just before 11 a.m.

A man in his 30s who brought his child said he often visits the station to see locomotives and that the Christmas train made this trip worth it.

Santa Clauses have boarded hot-air balloons to deliver presents to children in a city in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

Six hot-air balloons took to the sky in the city of Saku on Saturday. A local balloon club organizes the event every year.

This year they increased the number of balloons to encourage residents who suffered flood damage caused by Typhoon Hagibis in October.

The balloons traveled slowly about 40 meters off the ground.

One of the balloons carried four club members dressed as Santa Claus. When they spotted children, they landed and handed sweets to them.
A girl in the second grade of elementary school said she was happy to see Santa Claus come down from the sky.

One member of the ballooning club said the city was hit hard by the typhoon, and that he only hopes Santas riding in balloons will make local people feel warm inside.

The balloons are expected to appear in the sky again on Sunday, weather permitting.

Visitors to a zoo in the town of Nasu, north of Tokyo, have enjoyed watching capybaras bathe in a hot bath infused with aromatic yuzu citrus fruit.

Nasu Animal Kingdom created an outdoor bath and filled it with local hot spring water to allow the giant rodents, originally from the Amazon River in South America, to keep warm in the winter time.

Infusing a hot bath with yuzu citrus fruit is a winter solstice tradition among Japanese people, and zookeepers floated around 200 yuzu fruits in the outdoor bath on Sunday.

Visitors snapped photos of the rodents relaxing and enjoying extra treats of their favorite apples and pumpkins, which were also floating in the bath.

Children were invited to add more yuzu fruit to the bath.

A woman from Tokyo said it was heartwarming to watch the capybaras relaxing in the bath, and that she also wants to take a bath infused with yuzu fruit when she gets home.

The event will be held again on Monday.
