Security authorities in Lebanon have officially confirmed that former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn entered the country on Monday.

The authorities announced on Tuesday that Ghosn had entered the capital Beirut legally and there is no need to take legal measures.

A Lebanese security official told NHK that a person who appears to be Ghosn arrived in Beirut by private jet via Turkey.

The official said the passenger list did not include Ghosn's name but a French passport with his name was presented at immigration.

Lebanon's foreign ministry said in a statement that it has no knowledge of the circumstances of Ghosn's departure from Japan and subsequent arrival in Lebanon. The country does not have an extradition treaty with Japan. It is uncertain whether Lebanon will cooperate if Japan asks for his extradition. On Tuesday, Ghosn issued a statement saying he is in Lebanon.

Ghosn was released on bail in April on a set of conditions that included a ban on overseas travel. He has been indicted on charges of understating his compensation in Nissan's securities reports. He is also accused of aggravated breach of trust over the suspected misappropriation of company funds.

Ghosn was born in Brazil. He was raised in Lebanon and went to university in France. He is a citizen of France, Brazil and Lebanon.

Japanese authorities are looking into how former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn escaped from Japan to Lebanon.

Ghosn released a statement on Tuesday, saying that he entered Lebanon.

He was released on bail in April 2019 on a conditions including a ban on overseas travel. A Tokyo court revoked the bail following the announcement.

Security authorities in Lebanon said he legally entered the country via Turkey by private jet , and revealed that a French passport with his name was presented at immigration.

But the chief defense lawyer for Ghosn in Tokyo, Junichiro Hironaka , told reporters on Wednesday that the defense team has all of Ghosn's passports, including his French one. He is a citizen of France, Brazil and Lebanon.

French newspaper Le Monde quoted sources as saying that his private jet departed for Turkey from a low-profile airport in Japan.

The US newspaper Wall Street Journal quoted a person involved in the escape plan as saying that Ghosn "was spirited from his court-monitored residence in Tokyo onto a private jet, bound for Turkey." It says he "then continued by plane to Lebanon."

Informed sources say, there was no record of Ghosn's departure in the database of the Japanese Immigration Services Agency.

Aviation industry sources say private jets are not excepted from immigration and customs' checks on departure, but X-ray checks of luggage are applied on a case-by-case basis.

Ghosn has been indicted on charges of understating his compensation in Nissan's securities reports. He is also accused of aggravated breach of trust over the suspected misappropriation of company funds.

Sources say the Tokyo District Court has decided to revoke the bail of former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn.

Tokyo prosecutors had requested the revocation after Ghosn released a statement saying he is now in Lebanon.

Ghosn said in the statement issued by his press representative in New York that he "will no longer be held hostage by a rigged Japanese justice system where guilt is presumed, discrimination is rampant and basic human rights are denied."

The court allowed Ghosn to be released on bail in April 2019, but imposed conditions, including a ban on travel overseas.
The bond of 1.5 billion yen, or about 13.8 million dollars, will be confiscated. If Ghosn returns to Japan, he would be held in a detention center.

Sources say the Immigration Services Agency of Japan has no record of Ghosn leaving the country.

The chief lawyer of his defense team, Junichiro Hironaka, told reporters on Tuesday that they have all of Ghosn's passports and would not have given them back to him.

His trial was set to open as early as April. But it will not begin unless he returns to Japan.

Ghosn has been indicted on charges of understating his compensation in Nissan's securities reports. He is also accused of aggravated breach of trust over the suspected misappropriation of company funds.

A new trade agreement between Japan and the United States entered into force on Wednesday.

Japan will open its market to US farm products to a degree that does not exceed the scope of the Trans-Pacific Partnership pact.

Japan's 38.5 percent tariff on US beef has been cut to 26.6 percent. The levy will eventually drop to nine percent.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump have agreed that Washington will refrain from raising tariffs on Japanese vehicles.

Abe and Trump have also agreed to continue negotiations on tariffs on automobiles and auto parts. Japan wants the US to scrap these duties.

Washington and Tokyo plan to start the next round of negotiations within four months.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi stressed the significance of the pact, which follows the TPP and the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement.

Motegi said the three deals combined will create a free trade zone covering about 60 percent of the global economy.

The Japanese government plans to play a leading role in further expanding free trade blocs. The efforts include seeking an early conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, as well as reforming the World Trade Organization.

North Korea's state-run media say leader Kim Jong Un has told a plenary session of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee that the world will witness his country's new strategic weapon in the near future.

Korean Central Television reported on the meeting, which took place from December 28 to 31, spending 40 minutes on Kim's speech on Wednesday.

In the speech, Kim said the US has protracted the talks. He said it spoke about a resumption of dialogue just to pass the year-end without trouble.

North Korea had unilaterally set a year-end deadline for the US to make a breakthrough in the denuclearization talks.

Kim said his country promised in April of 2018 that it would halt nuclear weapons testing and ICBM test launches, but the US did not respond by lifting sanctions. He noted that the US remains hostile, conducting joint military drills with South Korea.

He indicated that there are no grounds for his country to be bound by its unilateral commitment to a moratorium.

The North's leader indicated the likelihood of a potentially long confrontation with the US. He said the scope and depth of his country's deterrent will depend on the future attitude of the US.

The North Korean leader gave a speech during a plenary session of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee held from December 28 to 31. He said North Korea would resume nuclear weapons testing and ICBM test launches, adding it would introduce a "new strategic weapon" in the near future.

Trump said Kim signed an agreement on denuclearization at their summit in Singapore, and urged him to refrain from provocative acts.

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper says the United States is sending around 750 soldiers to the Middle East to deal with the escalating protests targeting the US Embassy in Baghdad.

The protests in the Iraqi capital turned violent on Tuesday as the protesters set fires and threw rocks at walls surrounding the US embassy.

The protests followed Sunday's military strikes by the US on sites in Iraq and Syria connected to an Iran-backed militia.

Esper issued a statement on Tuesday, saying the deployment is an appropriate and precautionary action in response to increased threat levels against US personnel and facilities.

US President Donald Trump said on Twitter that "Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred" at any of the US facilities.

He said Iran will pay a very big price, and added that it is not a warning but a threat.

Washington has indicated that more military personnel may be deployed.

US President Donald Trump says the escalating protests targeting the US Embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad are being handled "very well".

Speaking to reporters at his resort in the state of Florida on Tuesday, Trump said that the violence "will not be a Benghazi".

He was referring to the 2012 attack by an armed group on the US diplomatic compound in the Libyan city that resulted in the deaths of the US ambassador and 3 other Americans. It occurred during the Obama presidency.

The Trump administration is dispatching an additional 750 soldiers to the Middle East. Trump says the protests are being orchestrated by neighboring Iran.

Asked if tensions with Iran could spiral into war, Trump said he wants to have peace, and that "it would not be a good idea for Iran" to have war.

Trump had said on Twitter that "Iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very big price."

The chairman of Japan's largest business federation, Keidanren, has called for managers and employees to discuss work styles and personnel systems.

Hiroaki Nakanishi commented on the upcoming springtime wage negotiations in an interview with media outlets.

He said Japan's wage levels are relatively low for a developed country and talented young people may want to work for overseas firms. He added that the momentum for wage hikes should never be lost.

But Nakanishi said it is no longer very meaningful for Keidanren to set a numerical target for wage increases.

He said it's important to have working conditions that will help the economy to demonstrate its international competitiveness.

Nakanishi called on labor and management to discuss work styles and personnel systems, including a review of Japan's unique practices, such as hiring new graduates at the same time and guaranteeing lifetime employment .

Keidanren plans to urge companies to reconsider their employment systems in a report that management will use as guidelines for wage negotiations. It says traditional employment practices may not be suitable for a changing society.
